Change Backhoe tire with porta-power and come along

I changed the two back tires on this backhoe and it was a struggle.
If I did it again could probably do it in half the time.
Tires on there were probably 20 years old and the side walls were totally cracked out. But tires were stronger then I thought.

You and I are like two peas in a pod. My tire blew apart. In my case, I took the wheel off. The local Farmers CO-OP charged me $25 to mount the tire for me. Now I have spent two days trying to get the wheel back on the backhoe. I just can't lift something that heavy in my old age and just can't get the height and angles right to get the lugs to go in. I'll go begging a neighbor for help tomorrow. In my younger days, this would have been easy! Know what you mean about keeping active or stiffening up so I can't move. Keep on trucking friend. It may take us longer, but we will eventually get there!

i used to supervise mobile equipment repair shops in the steel mills. we had every thing from wheel barrows to giant frontend loader tires. we always used the pros to do any tire work.tire work is a tough dangerous job ,but they made it look like a walk in the park. in your case perseverance won out, lesson learned i hope. like my dad used to say, do the things that you do best and pay others to do what they do best.

I'm not a tire pro but when I change them on the farm I break both beads 1st then use tire irons to spin them off the rim

I tried with those tire irons but I just couldn't see how I could get them off. I tried heating the tire up with the propane heater but the tire really didn't get hot enough. I also used the wrong lube at first and found it didn't get anything slippery. Then switched to oil stuff for the old tires and dish soap for the new ones. Thanks for the reply.

exactly, its not rocket since, if you dont break the bead, and you put pressure on it. it only gets tighter. thats how its designed.

Great video of a man determined to save a buck, next time have the tire shop remove and mount tires on rims, even if you had to remove wheels and take to wheels to tire shop, your time is worth something, 2 days and a lot of frustration, enjoyed watching your determination.

Hi Alfred, I really stewed about this for a couple of months, could have gone either way. Tire shop discouraged me from taking the wheels in, guess it is more work for them. They wanted the wheels on the equipment. Here are a couple of things to consider. One I am retired so the time is not taking off from work. Also I found that if I sit around I really have trouble getting moving again. I now try to work all through the winter to avoid problems in the spring. If I didn't do the tires I could have signed up at Crossfit and pushed big earth moving tires around to keep in shape. And the last thing is: I wish I had another backhoe that needed tires, because I would love to do it again, and this time I think I could get both tires on and off in one day. You see it is the challenge of the job that keeps a retired person going.

Yes, I understand being retired and staying active, however struggling with those tires is not for me, I would have spent that time doing something else that was not so physically demanding and have the tire shop unmount and remount those tires.

did the same thing cleaning the rims , just dropped one tire at a time and took to the tire shop in back of a pick-up, were they charge me just to put the tire on and off.

That was one option I thought about doing, but the guy at the tire shop said they would charge more if the tires were off the equipment. He really discouraged me from doing it that way.

This should of been called "how not to change a tyre and waste everyone's time" video. its not rocket since, if you dont break the bead, and you put pressure on it. it only gets tighter. thats how its designed.

Ok i know this is a old comment but, i do this for a living full time day in day out. I never break both beads first ever! If he had the correct leavers it would be much easier to remover the first bead, then the pressure from the tyre makes it easier to break the second this would take me around 30-45mins start to finish to change the tyre.
