We set sail from the relative safety of Marsh Harbor for a short voyage south to Little Harbor on the southern edge of Great Abaco Island. We are left with the conundrum on whether to continue the short hop to the beautiful and safe anchorage of Little Harbor or make the jump, at night, to an unknown anchorage, in Eleuthera.

I love how you showed your real thought process and the real anxiety, very good episode and window in to setting off in to the night, I liked it a lot, the feeling of the unknown, just awesome.

Thank you! That is very encouraging. While our journey is mostly gorgeous, we also struggle with our own demons as we venture through. We are glad to share our highs and lows with you so that we give a more accurate picture of this sailing lifestyle.

Great Vid really likes some of the different angles you showed, looked like some of the swells were a decent size and the interior shots looked liked you were rocking and rolling, the water in the sunlight looked stunning

It was definitely a bit of a rolly passage. We estimate there were some swells in excess of 6ft but it's so difficult to tell when we're out there!

I know you guys are keeping up with that weather coming in. Hope you guys stay safe. We’ve been getting decent rain down here.

Thank you! We are keeping a close eye on the forecast. I think today is our last nice weather day in Normans Cay for at least another week. On the positive side, it gives us a chance to get some video editing done! Then we will be waiting for the ideal conditions to leave Normans Pond -super narrow and shallow.

@@pdgadventures I’m just glad I was able to enlighten you to that phrase on Patreon. Like I said. We used it too often in the Navy.

Paige had a coworker who was an Air Force vet who used it on occasion as well. Guess it's a military thing!

Very cool! We are down in Big Major close to Stanial Cay hiding out from these winds with our big dog! Quick question… at about 5:37 in the video could you tell me about what nav program and touch screen computer you are using? Looked like a great presentation! Thanks!!

Hi there! We ourselves are hunkered down in Norman's Cay, so just up the road so to speak! That's actually just Navionics with the satellite overlay active. We use it on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 as our primary navigator as the chart plotter we have on board is about a year out of date and seems to have a mind of its own sometimes, but it (the chart plotter) does have our AIS, Radar, and depth sounder on it so it's still good to have on hand.

Thanks for sharing, it was a very good vid. You mentioned that it wasn’t good to arrive too early. It’s something I’ve not understood as yet.. why don’t boats go at best comfortable speed and then loiter? I dunno if you slowed or not but many people seem to slow their boat to avoid an arrival at non-ideal time. Maybe cats don’t “heave to” real well? But I always think I would never deliberately slow because things change…. better to be early and loiter I think. What am I not understanding about that aspect do you think? Have you guys tried a heave to? Would you consider that 5 or 10 miles offshore to wait for light?
@pdgadventures
@pdgadventures 6 месяцев назад
I think it depends on the individual sailor, the charts of the area and personal preference. In our original planning (when we were thinking we would arrive too early) we were planning to go through Fleming Channel or through the Egg Island cut and we didn't want to try and navigate it in the dark. Also, with the sea state as it was, slowing down could've/would've produced a much more uncomfortable and possibly dangerous ride. So we opted to keep our speed up and head for the best, safest anchorage we could find and felt comfortable navigating in the dark. Catamarans can heave-to but with our rig having a self tacking jib it isn't nearly as still as a boat with a regular, non-self-tacking system. On our first overnight/offshore we hove-to briefly while we sorted out our plan and hoped for the weather to ease off (it didn't), and we found ourselves drifting in the very wrong direction and still getting beat up by the waves.

@@pdgadventures thanks for that detailed reply. Yeah I was kinda asking in general…. in abacos it’s tight and different than open ocean I suppose. So with self tracker it’s no good…. I wonder if a preventer on the tack would solve that? It’s a shame it doesn’t work so well for cats…. monos can get quite stable hove to (depending on particular boats though). Gotta say I have lots of respect for you two…. you have plenty of pluck and great attitudes. You deserve fair winds and beautiful beaches. I hope they come you way regularly. Thanks.
@pdgadventures
@pdgadventures 6 месяцев назад
We agree. The ability to hove to is very important and we love the idea of attempting it with a preventer on the headsail. This would make it easier to wait out a storm or even wait for daylight. Thank you for your encouragement and the suggestion!
