Join us as we set out for a life of adventure with our Great Dane on our 38' catamaran.
Are you wanting to travel the world, but don't feel like you can - for one reason or another? We used to feel the same way. Three years ago we had $250K in debt and today we live DEBT-FREE with aspirations to sail the world, one island at a time. We are Paige & Daniel, traveling with our Great Dane, Winston. We aim to share our lives with hopes to inspire and guide you along your journey to live your dreams.
We post episodes every Friday for your enjoyment and you can get more details about the adventure by joining our Patreon - FREE Memberships are also available! Of course, we won't baulk at a pledge. :) Every dollar goes into keeping this alive - future goals include producing a PODCAST to give information to new/future sailors, and possibly a reference guide or course material to assist new/future sailors.
The bottom line is this... our dream is to help you achieve yours.
Can you rig some sort of self supporting shelving that still allows you to access your starboarf motor for fuel and oil checks... and that allows you to reach the back of the bed and side shelves? Access is key to making it work .. netting to stop things comming off the shelves onto the bed or floor.🫣
I would definitely like to visit and how to learn a catamaran I took a ride on one of them before and I loved it how much do you guys charge for someone cruising with you guys
Thank you! We don't charge to have friends on board!!! We may set up an opportunity to take people out in the future, but not at this time. We occasionally will bring our pledged patrons out for a trip if we're in the same area. Where are you located?
Love the coffee idea. I have beans from Sri Lanka, turned to my wife and asked if we have a popcorn popper? Immediately I realized an Air Fryer would do the same thing, and sure enough, someone wrote an article on how to do it. You guys do such a great job showing the mechanics of sailing, cooking, and living on the boat. I've learned more from you than any of the other half dozen or more RU-vidr sailors I have followed. Thank you so much for letting us into your adventures!
Wow, we can't tell you how much that means to us. We strive to make our videos fun and informative, and give a real picture of life on the water. It certainly isn't always pretty. Please keep us updated about how well the air fryer works for your Sri Lanka beans! We don't have an air fryer onboard (our storage space is minimal) but I'm sure many people do!
Oh so we have a invitation to visit, I'll sleep on the bed with the spare sails etc you don't to put yourself out for me,I've slept in a lot of worse places, I don't think Daniel makes you keep your clothes in a different location because of Winston, but thats a subject for another time, really entertaining vid and very nice to invite us all to look around your home, and being honest about the bits you don't like. You guys keep up the good work, enjoy yourselves and stay safe
Lol, and to think we've been doing it wrong this whole time! 😆 We should just rename our salon to the bridge and it would sound so fancy! Of course that goes with our sail loft (guest cabin) and walk-in pantry (other guest cabin)!
Ah, yes! Thank you for the translation. We will strive to be better about including that information. It's funny when we talk to anyone else in the world about distance or temperature because we realize that even though we are both speaking English we have different languages, cultures and experiences... It seems that we're getting a bit philosophical, sorry!
Lol, thank you! Our early vids are very unpolished but it's all a part of the journey and we wouldn't change a thing. With Daniels culinary background, we love "give it some herbs"! After all, who doesn't like a little extra spice to life?!
It is entirely dependent on the boat yard you are in. In this case, Thunderbolt Marina does not allow DIY. As to the why? Couldn't tell you. Off the top of my head: insurance laibility (people getting hurt on their property), environmental concerns (people not cleaning up properly and/or disposing of stuff improperly), time/space considerations (DIY usually takes significantly longer than professional work). Just a few thoughts that come to mind.
@@pdgadventures Yes these possible problems do make sense. I guess I have been watching cat cruisers for years now and this is the first time I have heard this. Although, most doing DIY stuff on these channels are “on the hard” locations outside of the US. I do enjoy your channel very much. Your calm and relaxed presentation without drama and pearl clutching just makes it that much more real for me, even when there are weather or other concerns. Where are you headed to next.
@@geoffcooper1300 there are many yards in the US that offer DIY, but most of the ones we found (that could haul us) were in south Florida. Thank you for the lovely compliment! We do very much try to keep it authentic to the situation, and there are some situations were 💩 hits the fan but we just try and roll with it and see it as a learning experience. We're back in Fernandina (north Florida) for now. More work to get ready for the next cruising season!
This is the first of your videos that I have seen. Very entertaining as evidenced by the hand print. Nice “touch”. With your personalities you’ll go far. New subscriber here!
Cruising is a school day every day! When I work on something I have never done before my ambition is to DO IT NEATLY! Using the right fasteners, connectors, materials and the correct tool ends up giving the project a professional bristol look. Well Done! on the sunshades. If you find the edges fluttering in the wind the general solution is to cut the material between the grommets with a slight curvature rather than straight - it provides greater tension to the edge. For DIY sewing I heartily recommend "Canvas for Cruisers" 2nd Edition by Julie Gifford. She eruditely explains marine materials, methods/techniques, each by project.
The skirt actually has shorts underneath so any concern of modesty is ill placed. As for dangerous? Not exactly sure how it would be any different than any other clothing?
The pearl necklace, while real pearls, are the affordable sort, so if they do get lost during unexpected conditions it's ok. Besides it's just a thing and things break. Not sure what you are referring to by "rock"? Could be a translation error?
We have been enjoying your posts since we met in Green Turtle. I noticed in the last 2 videos that your jack lines apear to be laid along the toe rail. Consider rigging them inboard. The idea is that your tether will pull tight before your wieght gets nesr the edge of the boat. Not just keeping you attached to the boat but actually keeping you ON the boat. There is alot of discussions in the sail training world. Practical Sailor is a good start.
Wonderful! Great suggestion!!! We've seen it along the stanchions in other videos and figured that was a good place to secure it to since we don't have a toe rail. We will check out the practical sailor for some other jackline placements. We certainly don't want to fall off the boat!!!
You're very welcome and thank you so much for your support! We're working on a series intended to help the fresh and aspiring sailor know what this life is all about. Hope to see you in the comments again soon!
Thanks for the comment..it helps drive the algorithm to more viewers, so even though you didn't watch it you still created an engagement which is just as good. So, thanks!
Paige: My wife Maria suffered serious cancer operation on her face with the surgery from Ear to Ear.......She fine today she is good b I t I wat h you often Sun burned on your face so may I seriously suggest you be more carefully and protective of your face & skin ( the both of you ) Peter Harkin of Harkin Marinr Hardware fame is married to a Dermatologist and Sells a formulated Sun Screen cream for sailors.
We do spend most of our time running from shade to shade and when we are out in the sun are keenly aware of our exposure. To be entirely honest, we're not big fans of sunscreen either. But we did find one recently that we are very keen on trying so we will definitely be wearing it in the future.
Note : As a sailmaker ,I do not approve of sewing the cover materials on the sail leech as it distorts the set and burdens the leech . Additionally: it's easier to replace a hoisted cover and MUCH CHEAPER ! p Syou never informed me if you are coming up to Pamlico Sound , specifically to Washington where I can offer you portage/ dockage
I don't think we planned on sewing anything onto the sail? The leech is clear of the bag at this point so we just need to sew the band back to it's original position in order to secure the zipper slide. And, as many sailors will attest, our plans are currently written in the sand at low tide! We will keep your generous offer in mind if we head up that way.
Paige, Winston : as a cat sailor for over 60 years and a Master Sailmaker and having once owned the largest sailoft in New England specializing in Multihull sails and tramps for thousands of cats , I disapprove of the artificial turf being on the tramps while you sail should a wave brake over the ow it could cause the boat to pitch pole or do weight loading that could cause structural loading ! FYI
That's a fair point, however we don't see ourselves heading into weather sufficient enough to cause such an issue while we have Winston (our dog) aboard. He does love the turfs and they drain extremely quickly and well.
The pronounced " Dolphin striker " is actually a Seagull striker as it fa es up where as a Dolphinstriker faces down towards the water ,thus the name DOLPHIN !
As we intend this is to be a basic introduction to sailing we're trying to introduce the concept to the new and aspiring sailor. Throwing too much at someone becomes overwhelming. We wanted to keep this video digestible and provide a base from which to build.
ALL catamaran "DO NOT HAVE MINI KEELS , there are 3 other categories of underwater appendages: centerboards, daggerboards,SCABBOARDS. you need to clear that up!
You are correct, however we did say "most" not "all". Also, we are trying to keep things super simple. As you're definitely aware, sailing terms and vocabulary is expansive and overwhelming to the beginner sailor.
As you each tapped the hull to explane the difference between Port & Starboard you c east hit the opposite side: example.......as you stood under the Hills as you slapped the Starboard Hull you hit it's Port side conversely, the same is true to the Port hulls starboard side ! You should clarify from the perspective time looking forward pointing to the Port & starboard Bowes of the Port & Starboard hulls.
