Change rubber blade only of Toyota windshield wiper, use strong push to un-stuck old blade

You can change just the rubber-blade insert of the Toyota windshield wiper to save money and reduce waste. Push hard to un-stuck the old blade (1:01). I do this for my family's Prius, Corolla, and Yaris 2014-2015 cars. It's similar for many other Toyota models.
To remove the wiper, pry up the little rectangular tab and then pull the whole wiper down, out of the metal "U" in which it is mounted. Reinstallation is the reverse of removal.
To change just the rubber blade, push the old rubber blade out -- it might take some force to get it past the little metal tab that fits in the rubber notch on the end (1:01).
Take the two metal edges and insert them into the thin grooves on the new rubber blade. Thread the new blade onto the blade holder and reinstall the wiper.
To change the rear wiper, there's an additional step at the beginning: Pull up the plastic cover at the base of the wiper (where it connects to the motor). This exposes the hinge that allows you to pull the wiper away from the rear window glass.
Shop around to get a better price. I paid $12 at my local Toyota dealer but only $7 at Toyota dealer in another city (Roseville Toyota). I had to pay shipping but it was still a lot less.

Safety tip: Always place a big folded up towel or sweatshirt against the windshield where the wiper arm meets the glass. If you have the wiper blade assembly off and the metal arm snaps back against the windshield due to an inadvertent bump, it's possible that it could crack your windshield. That would turn a cheap wiper blade repair into an expensive window replacement.

I'm late to the party but thinks for posting those instruction. We have been a Corolla family forever but I only recently learned you are able to just replace the rubber portion.

THANK YOU! "You put it in from the bottom...not from the top." You saved me from so much frustration. Sometimes you just need someone to tell you the part that's obvious. Thank you very much.

You legend. Just had to do this for my son’s Corolla and they only sold the rubber inserts like this. Never done it before and you saved me lots of time and expletives that I can’t afford at my time of life 😊🥰

Thank you for sharing especially for showing the part on how to get the old rubber out. I was really challenged on that step and I was thankful I saw your video cause on some videos I saw it was not that specific and detailed.

Very good vid. Couple of things to add. The metal tension inserts transfered from the old to new wiper inserts have a positioning notch on one end of each that fits over a little a plastic hump in the wiper blade assembly. Keeps us from inserting them incorrectly. Toyota and Honda both use this technique. #2 Never throw away the Toyota (or Honda) wiper blade assembled that came with the car from the factory. Their special and other just don't work as well. Same for the rubber wiper inserts. Similar to only using Toyota OEM oil and air filters (cabin and engine) that you personally bought from a Toyota Dealer parts department. It's sad but everything else has to be assumed to be China fakes. Just by changing the oil every 6,000 miles (or 6-months) you can get 300,000 to 400,000 miles out of a new Toyota if you want to. If you have and Independent garage changing your oil vs the Toyota Dealer give them the Toyota OEM oil filter and or the engine and cabin air filter that you bought. Also ask them to use high quality "full" synthetic motor oil.

Some people say we can drive 10k miles between oil change if we use full synthetic oil, but some say only 5k. So, what do you think it's true ?

Great info from the video and from the comment section. Much appreciated. Clearly showed how it is done and made the job simple and easy to do on my 2021 Rav4 after the rubber wipers became unraveled from the blade due to frozen snow. "Shoulda and coulda" removed the snow sooner. Lesson learned.

2:10 Another trick is you install the rubber blade first and slide in the metal strip. It can go in smoothly.

I spent over an hour trying to do this and the fucking metal rods kept popping out of place, one time I got it halfway threaded through and then the rods popped out on both ends and then one end was longer than the other and I just got pissed off. Gonna take it to the dealer in the morning and hope they will help. If not I'll just buy new blades every time, this is ridiculous.

If you're just replacing the rubber, I recommend buying from a Toyota dealer. If you're replacing the whole wiper, you can buy any brand anywhere, as long as the mounting mechanism is compatible.

When I took the rubber strips out of my 2011 Prius' wipers, I found out that the blades had been changed previously (I bought the car used) and the blades don't accept just the rubber strips. Blast it! I don't believe in all the material waste in this culture. The car parts manufacturers want us to buy more stuff and fill the landfills with unneccesary waste! Can you advise me of any source for the oem blades (other than Toyota $$$$$$) or another manufacturer whose replacements can also accept just the rubber strips? Great instructional video!
@graychang99
@graychang99 Год назад
You can get non-OEM whole wiper blades from Costco for a reasonable price but I think you can't replace just the rubber parts.

Trying to change my rear blade - rubber insert on 2015 Prius V - have the blade off of the car, but the unit has caps at the end of the blade - (where on your displayed blade - the rubber insert slides in to the tracks) I understand how to replace the metal parts in to the rubber insert an naturally slide it back in -BUT I can't get the rubber insert out! Being that it is the rear blade, there are only 3 sections to hold the rubber in - with the caps that are part of the molded plastic - how do you remove the rubber? Forcing it will either break the caps or bending the metal supports for the rubber. Help - can anyone tell me how to do this? When I bought the rubber at the dealer - I thought it was going to be the whole replacement part and surprised that it was just the rubber (as I have been told for years that you can't just replace the rubber) Which I believe is a total waste of MY money. But if I can't change it simply - then what's the point!

@@graychang99 Thanks - I guess it's just that I have no strength to pull it out, even with tools! In your recommended video he does it right on the car - maybe that's the resistance I need in order to pull it out. Have to go back past the dealer today anyway - so I'll get their muscle to put it in. Thanks for the help!

Buy the correct rubber blade from a Toyota dealer for your original Toyota wipers. Alternatively, you can buy non-Toyota wipers and blades.
