Changing Bike Pedals - Stuck Pedal

I replace the clipless pedals on a bike with platform style pedals. The right pedal was very hard to remove. Pretty close to seized. I believe it became partially welded to the crank arm through galvanic corrosion. After getting both pedals off, I install the platform pedals with a little bit of grease on the threads so they won't get frozen to the cranks.
This is the Park Tool PW-4 Pedal Wrench I show in the video:

Just a tip. The seat tube is intended to take linear compression loads and is sized accordingly. The tubing in a bike frame is much thinner than most people realize. Position the pedal arms horizontally with the one you want to remove leading. Place a block under the trailing pedal. You then have the length of both pedal arms to counter the weight you put on the cheater bar and the components are designed to take the full weight of the rider standing on the pedals. (and maybe pulling up on the bars as well)
@Gjifdxvv
@Gjifdxvv 2 года назад
I second this method! With the cranks horizontal I covered a breezeblock with an old tshirt to protect the trailing pedal/crankarm then I was able to push the cheater bar/spanner down with my foot whilst holding the bike down. Removed some seriously stuck pedals with ease and no damage to frame or components :)

Man I'm waiting for the cussing & shit to start slinging around the garage or stuff to start snaping breaking. Because if something ever goes my way or I come out to the good on something... I watched dozen of videos on how to remove pedals and only got more frustrated until I came across this video. Simply and straight forward. I used the piece of wood (which was a game changer) but not having anything to do leverage on the wrench I use my body weight by stepping on the wrench and pushing with my foot. Thanks.

I was about to spend money on a specialist wrench until you pointed out all you need is a 15mm spanner. I like how you get out of breath, and it doesn't go smoothly, and how the environment you do it in doesn't look like a bike repairer shop. It's close to how it would actually be if I tried it. Thanks so much. Subscribed.

Great tutorial! I have a tip that will help. As soon as the stuck pedal starts moving, apply lots of oil/lubricant before continuing to unscrew the pedal. Even though it won't dissolve the oxide/corrosion, it will significantly reduce the friction while unscrewing the pedal the rest of the way.
@ctrlzyx2
@ctrlzyx2 Год назад
Absolutely. As soon as you get something this seized to start to move, hit with spray lube. Pb blaster, silicone lube, petroleum lube, or even wd40... any of these better than nothing. Once you get things moving you don't tempt fate!

It's interesting how one pedal always comes off easily enough and another is always stuck like hell. I wonder whether that means anything.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 8 лет назад
Remember that the two cranks were not match. Maybe the left pedal was greased before it was installed, but the right one wasn't. Or the metal was different and the galvanic reaction was different.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 8 лет назад
RJ The Bike Guy Yeah but i mean it happens for me too, and i have everything the same on both sides. I think in my case though, it's the side that is leaned onto when the bike is standing, it has a one-sided stand that leans it always the same way, so that's where moisture drips towards and corrosion happens. I can see more corrosion on this side.

Thanks MAN! I had a spoil crank set stucked with a pair of good pedals 3 years. The last mechanic which helped to install the pedals did not put any grease and used damn lots of force to tighten it. After many fail attempts, today I searched and saw your video of using a long pole for leverage and removed the pedals. The pedals goes to my mum bicycle as Long ago I had a new pedal to go with my new crank set. My mum is loving that new pedals.

Thank you. I was trying to change the pedals on a bike my son gave me because I don't have clip-on shoes. I was pretty sure I was doing it right, but nothing would budge so I assumed I must have been doing something wrong. Knowing that a breaker bar is sometimes necessary is a big help. Glad to know there isn't some tricky hidden locking mechanism and it's okay to use a lot of force.

REALLY USEFUL to see how these can really get seized in the real world. All the other pedal removal demos I found show them unscrewing with no problem. I was struggling with a pedal today, worried that somehow I was doing it wrong or that I would break something. But no. It was just tight as all get-out and I had to use a pipe and brace, like you did, and I kept loading it up with penetrating oil, letting it sit, and then coming back to it later.

Just had to do this. Park tools vid showed the guy tipping the bike in the stand vertical. I got one pedal off already while the bike was on the ground, i did a search because i couldn't get the 2nd pedal off. And I had my foot on the front rim like you had. So I came here of course and sure enough i found the way. Thank you! I used a 2x4 and i used my wife's rusted seat post, worked very well. Only allen key though so it was brutal. Only problem is my allen key broke my bottle cage. snapped it in half. lol

This is helpful in that it depicts a real life situation - as someone else pointed out. I just spent 30 min trying to remove stuck pedals after watching another video that indicated all that you needed to do was put the 15mm wrench in step on the pedal and push down. There was no reference to a cheater bar (for leverage) nor the blocking wood, which I did not have and found it impossible to make progress without it. So.. thanks for the clarification regarding proper tools and approach.

If you orient the crank arm towards the front of the bike, and the wrench toward the back you can use the crank's structure to your advantage, usually not needing support from.a 2x4. In this case there was(i'm going with you on this ) some galvanic corrosion which made it harder. Also I would use more grease (on both pedal and crank) .

Thank you for this! Good call on the cheater bar and fulcrum. I have two ancient bikes that I am setting up for training use. Worked like a charm. I might add a step of using penetrating oil first. This is a "brute force effort" after one tries the conventional pedal removal method. Can't stress often enough to STOP and remember which side you're working on.... Buying a piece of pipe and a little elbow grease saved me from bringing two partially disassembled bikes to the LBS Remember to clean the crank and grease the pedal before putting on the replacement

Got a new bike, wanted other pedals but they were stuck, i acctualy felt the frame bending under the forses, ended up taking both cranks of and placing them into a vice, and finaly with a 1 meter 50 length bar got them of, now take them of once every two months to put just petroleum vaseline on the treads and the work fine, seizing is very bad on a different material combo like aluminium and steel(s235) or so, mayby put a few stones and a pillow under the other crank instead of putting scratches on the frame, not very nice on a high end roadbike.... thanks for all the amazing vids, took a lot of tricks out of them

and I want to let you know that I didn't have a steel pipe but a pvc, and your comment saved me from breaking my wrist 5 years later!

Yeah! Finally managed to get an old pedal off using a wrench inside a metal table leg. Thanks for the video! What suprised me was that it seemed well greased. I guess it was just tight as heck.

Haha changed my pedals today on my Trek Marlin mtb. Had basic Welgo nylons and getting quite slippery. After watching your video I expected the worst. Got the plank and the cheater bar and ......it came really easy. Didn't need either. Just a wrench. At least you taught me which direction to turn. I knew one of them had a left hand thread but didn't know which. Thanks for the video.

They are usually tight, but not usually as tight as the one in this video.

Thanks for this. My pedals weren't too tight but I have arthritis in my fingers so it makes it that bit harder. I used a rubber-handled 15mm bike spanner and a few taps with a hammer and off they came.
