I've got a 1997 Celica GT convertible. 230,000 miles but runs good. Noticed the temperature gauge needle registers just above halfway even when I'm doing highway speeds which I wonder whether is normal, my thinking is it should be just below halfway. I only purchased the car in October. Fans work fine, coolant level OK. No leaks. There was a bit of debris between radiator and ac condenser which I removed but I don't think this is the problem. Ordered a new radiator cap, if this doesn't work then I'll try the thermostat. Thanks for posting.

Yeah mine registers at slightly below halfway when warmed up.

@@ufixitauto5237 thanks. Got home last night and the top radiator hose was hot, the bottom hose going up to the thermostat stone cold. Suspect a faulty thermostat so will put in a new one later. If that doesn't solve it then I'll consider replacing the radiator and water pump. Luckily I'm able to do the work myself so all pretty cheap fixes!

Nice video, and beautiful car. So I’ve been noticing a smell from my 1997 Celica. The temp gauge on my dash hasn’t moved, but I wonder if my thermostat is off, my fluid needs to be changed. I can’t describe the smell, but it smells hot-if that makes sense. If I buy the thermostat from your link, will it fit my car? Thanks!

I have coolant coming out the holes on the top of My radiator. If you squeeze the top hose coolent also comes out. Still over heats after changing the thermostat. Any ideas?
@ufixitauto5237
@ufixitauto5237 2 года назад
Overheating could be a decent amount of things: blockage, head gasket, water pump, radiator, fans, etc. Do a block test to check head gasket and check fans to see if they are working. After, maybe try swapping out the radiator. And working your way to the water pump. Or, you can pay a mechanic to diagnose it for you. Sometimes it's worth the 80-120 dollars. It's hard to tell without seeing the car, so you can start there!

I got a 97 celica GT that overheats. replaced radiator cap, thermostat checked the headgasket for a crack with a combustion kit (didn't turn yellow) and it over heats, any ideas? Whenever you accelerate the temp Guage goes up (quickly) then goes back down (quickly like within 10 seconds either way)it idles fine without overheating. The fans don't come on by themselves so I constantly leave AC on cold full blast
@ufixitauto5237
@ufixitauto5237 2 года назад
Are you sure it's overheating? Could be a bad gauge that is reading it wrong, coolant temp sensor, water pump, radiator, fans, etc. It's typically not normal to see the engine temp fluctuate up and down that rapidly which is why I'm wondering if maybe your gauges are reading it wrong haha
@foreverhelds1970
@foreverhelds1970 2 года назад
@@ufixitauto5237 maybe, but it got hot started steaming (radiator overflow part which has a small chip). like we threw a radiator cap on it went away then a week later the old thermostat blew. Replaced that and the temp gauge went high and havnt had the time to mess with it since.

Oh it is :) different front end due to collision when I bought it and I purchased a JDM front end kit from Ebay to repair it. It's a 5SFE engine in a 98 convertible. In the states, 98-99 should have all been GT if I'm not mistaken. Don't base it off the lack of facelift ;)
