This is a very in depth video on how to change the alternator on a 1997 Cadillac Seville SLS Northstar. This probably applies to other years with this particular engine as well. I did the mechanical work as well as the video work which was recorded with a GoPro 7 and edited using Movavi Video Editor. I tried to keep the video as short as possible but it is very in depth so I'm sorry for the length. If you watch this video until the end you'll be an expert on changing this part.

Please note that this car didn't have the access door underneath like some models do. I checked before I started the job and you should as well to make sure. If yours has that door you can cut down on the amount of time greatly required to do this job.

YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE TAKEN OUT FROM THE BOTTOM. THERE IS A METAL PLACE THAT YOU REMOVE THAT IS MADE TO GIVE YOU CLEARANCE INORDER TO REMOVED THE ALTENATOR.

@@mikee5507 My 96 has a metal plate under the alt and no bolts. My shop manual doesn't even mention it.

When you were putting the fourth Bolton on the alternator try pinching it between your pointer and your middle finger along the threading and then taking one finger off once it is partially wedged into the hole and spinning. worked perfect for me.

The most difficult bolt to take out is on the back of the alt and you didn't show it. Any idea on the best way to get to it?

Yes I used a very long extension and a long handle ratchet...sorry about the missed step. I thought I showed it. Remember this is also the hardest bolt to get back in. I had to go under the car to get it started....

@@RailFanRob Thanks, I'll have to do it all from the top as the 96 Seville doesn't have an access panel under the alt.

When you are doing the two difficult bolts on the alternator try using a wrench with another wrench placed around the primary wrench in order to give yourself more torque

Thanks for adding the video, I have a 97 and about to replace the alt. Only wants to charge 12.3 volts max and 11.7 with the AC on, time to give it a long rest....

How long did it take from start to finish to complete this job

Actual work time took about 2 hours and 30 minutes but it was the first time I attempted this job so it would take me less since I know exactly how to do it.
