In the run-up to COP26, we asked our researchers to tell us about their work and the challenges of tackling climate change.
Parik Goswami is the Head of the Department for fashion and textiles and the Director of the Technical Textiles Research Centre.
Parik’s research is focused on reducing the footprint of the fashion and textiles industry, which creates pollution at different stages, for example, he explains there are dyes used in the industry that can change the genetic configuration of fish.
The textile industry uses gallons of water so Parik is investigating new processes to functionalise textiles, called plasma technology. This would mean using gas molecules instead of water.
“So we have a framework in the UK that we are working towards. For example, we have an initiative called Textiles 2030 where we have targets to decrease the carbon footprints and water consumption in the textile industry, and we are very serious to achieve that”.
