Thinking outside of the box is part of becoming a good horse person. This video is an example of changing a horses habit by breaking the cycle of behaviour a horse has learned to avoid being saddled.
I teach Good Horsemanship around the world helping people to understand the emotional and mental component of how horses operate to achieve both a willing partnership and bond and to maximize the performance potential of a horse.

This is a really useful video! Short and on point, I like that. :) I think people who get off-track racers should really invest some time in entirely re-training them. They are not properly trained to be ridden to begin with, just trained to accept a rider for some time and then run at full speed. And the training methods and way of life are often a heavy mental burden to the young horses. Riding is entirely different, so it would be good advice to just take some time and teach them from scratch again. Henry showed that really well here and I'm glad it was just a minimal version of what some off-track racers can develope in terms of habits. I'm happy to hear that this helped him and his owner. Good job!

Geez Ross, this has got to be your best video ever. Just perfect (whatever that is worth coming from me).

Having a good equine veterinarian check him over is the best first step. ? Is his topline filled out adequately in front of and behind his withers? Could be spinal troubles. I've seen track horses get sour from overwork/repetition/discomfort, to the point where they don't want to work with people any more. Henry's in the early stages, but I bet he can be helped. Kudos to Barbara for looking for a solution, not just blaming the horse. Cheers!

I agree. I think there maybe some pain issues. One of the telltales is that he has a history of going from zero to 100 in a bolt and has done so with Barbara and different trainers. Sometimes on the ground and sometimes when ridden. But he also has some habitual behaviours and a mindset that most things are going to work out badly for him. Henry has a good mind and Barbara wants him to feel better, so I believe things will improve for him in the future. I hope I will see him again at a clinic next March.
