I've heard that the glue around the CPU is silicone based and because of that using heat on it is useless. I'm going to try the slow razor blade method as the painters knives I've seen more people have trouble with. Thank you for making this video!

Hold on to your backwards compatible units because they will skyrocket in price very soon :) . Also good job on the de-lid but there are easier methods (I did a video on this if you want to check it out). Also I would recommend upgrading the power supply to a APS-231 which emits less heat and upgrade to liquid metal (only between the chip die and IHS and NOT on top as the heatsink is aluminum)
@Firehawk4mula
@Firehawk4mula Год назад
I had considered using liquid metal between the die and ihs. I decided against it however as I thought the ihs was aluminum. The power supply isn't a big concern to me because I haven't seen it make more than a few degree difference.

Cool! I thought about delidding but it might be too much of hassle to do and I'll just do the eraser mod (or thermal pad in this case) behind the CPU. Seems the painter's knife and fishing wire looked harder to cut the glue than others had shown in videos. I think they're too dull/thick or not stiff enough to cut the glue. Maybe one day I'll do it with like NSC's delidding tool which have a sharp edge. I'm also planning on polishing/wet sanding the PS3 shell to remove the scratches on the PS3 I brought!

This is my favorite console ever! I have 9 CECH-A01, 1 CECH-B01, 1 CECH-G01, 2 CECH-P01, 1 Slim and 1 Super Slim. Those consoles were like your model dusty and needed some PM done to them. 1:11 CECH-B01 is hardware based backwards compatible and also has the Emotion Engine. CECH-B01 has almost an identical board as CECH-A01. CECH-B01 just does not have the memory card readers or WI-FI. Sony only produced these consoles for six months (Nov 2006-April 2007). 1:17 A few consoles I have done some PM work on, the thermal pads were dry as this disc drive pad was. 7:00 is that Stitch!? Seems you like the Stitch character. 10:00 You actually do not need heat to remove the IHS. 11:20 this board takes a lot of heat that is why Sony made the board so thick. But yes, applying heat the IHS would eventually transfer the die as well. Sony really did a disservice by gluing the IHS down on the PS3 models. The only model I can think of where the IHS is missing is the PS3 Super Slim GPU this is an 40NM die. (Whereas the CECH-A01 has a 90NM GPU die). The heat pipe sits right on the die on the Super Slim. A screw pushes the heat pipe on to the die surface of the PS3 Super Slim. The CELL IHS to remove I use a number one painter's knife dip the knife blade into 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. This reduces the knife's friction on the adhesive a little. Everyone has their own method just find one that works for yourself. Never tried or seen the fishing line method before. (I was wondering why you had gloves on) fishing line tough on hands. 12:45 you could also delid on the South Bridge chip it has thermal glue all the way around the die (no open slot) but the adhesive is not as thick as the CPU IHS. This paste under the IHS on the South Bridge die was dry as well. The ram chips do get some voltage applied them hence the thermal pads on top and bottom of the board. These are 1mm to 1 1/2 mm thick, South Bridge is 2mm thick (I measured the thickness of each thermal pad) I am that person. I have seen the CECH-G01 model have a small pad on the underside of the CPU. The CECH-P01 does as well, CECH-P01 model also has the 65NM CPU and GPU dies. 16:22 tighten the CPU/GPU clamps more in a uniform pattern tightening one side may squeeze the paste to one side. Saw the pattern improve once the clamps were beginning to tighten down. The thermal pad under the disc drive is 2mm thick I did not see you replace that one (I know you stated did not have enough new thermal pads to replace all the old ones). You got my sub! Just randomly found your channel! 22:33 I was looking for the PS3 Easy Chill cooling fan mod video. Is that on another channel? Plus, I like you as a host to all your videos! If you see this drop me a line as to my thoughts on your PS3 clean delid video. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Saying that CECHB and CECHC aren't backwards compatible is a fallacy. CECHB was the cheap launch model and is the exact same as the CECHA internally only without the wifi and memory card slots as well as a 20gb hard drive. CECHC was the PAL launch model and it has the same internals as the CECHE except for the power supply which is the only one that isn't universal voltage. The ones that aren't backwards compatible are CECHG onwards

Hi Just bought a PS3 slim and thinking of doing the same as I already have the kryonaut and the time... You seemed to have left the 'white glue' on what i guess is the GPU dedicated RAM Just wonder why you did'nt clean all the components of the GPU? Wouldn't have it better to clean all the 5 components and apply grizzly kryonaut (or even the new extreme) on of all of them ? Anyway, great video to explain all the steps Happy to have a slim, not PS1/PS2 compatible, but easier to disassemble/reassemble... Thx

@Firehawk4mula

Unfortunately there is no long term solution to saving these PS3's. They just have to many issues. I would still recommend using a quality thermal paste. If your console is shutting down due to overheating I highly recommend doing a delid. Doing the maintance and keeping the temps down can help with system life expectancy. If a delid is beyond your ability I would recommend trying to find a reputable repair center around your area. I hope this Helps! Thanks for watching.

Can you let me know why did you apply thermal pad where is the hole under CELL? Is it your invention/idea or this model had pad there originally? My cechc03 did not have it and I was under impression that this hole is to allow heat to dissipate through it.
@Firehawk4mula
@Firehawk4mula 2 года назад
The early models of the phat PS3 didn't have a pad in this location but later revisions did. I'm not sure that it does much either way but I have heard that it helps dissipate heat when applied to this area. I also figured there must be a good reason that Sony put thermal pads there in later revisions as they aren't going to spend the extra few cents per board applying a pad to this area if they didn't have a good reason to do so. Thanks for watching!
@jelkobg5944
@jelkobg5944 Год назад
I'm little later here but the thermal pad is applied for more pressure on the processor so it can make better contact with the ihs. It drastically reduces the temps. Sony did placed platic cover under the CELL in some CECHC and CECHE models for more pressure. In my case after placing 3mm thermal pad the temps dropped from 68°C to 56°C. But be careful, a lot of pressure can cause BGA cracks and potentially brick your PS3.

Do you think 2.5 mm thermal pads are too thick? I just have some in hand rn and don't want to order a different size
@Firehawk4mula
@Firehawk4mula 2 года назад
In some spots it will be unless the thermal pad is pretty compressible. There are spots that are supposed to have a 1.5 mm thermal pad but a soft 2.5 mm replacement shouldn't hurt.

@Kyle-pj2vc Год назад
I delidded mine successfully, but unfortunately the momentum of my hand knocked the emotion engine chip clean off as soon as the ihs popped off.. rip the board.. very expensive hard fix now that's likely not worth it. I ruined a perfectly good CHECHA01 and wasted money. Let that be a warning to how dangerous delidding can be, if you're not careful
@Firehawk4mula
@Firehawk4mula Год назад
Rip your A01! In all fairness it would have died without being delidded anyway. I'm not sure what tools you were using but this can be a time consuming, delicate procedure. I wish you better luck with your next attempt!! The A01 could still be parted out and sold on ebay to recoupe some money. Just keep the motherboard and disk drive board together. Someone may be able to repair it or atleast use the parts to fix another dead system.

Hi, I have a question, can I use a hair dryer instead of a heat gun?
@Firehawk4mula
@Firehawk4mula 2 года назад
No, a hair dryer isn't going to produce anywhere near the amount of heat that you're going to need. It's worth the $12 to buy one from harbor freight tools and do the job right. Thanks for watching and hope this answers your question.
@couk85
@couk85 2 года назад
Yes, you can.. That's what I did.. However you would want to avoid applying heat on it and use sharp, thin blade to cut in between IHS and memory dies on RSX instead.. But hairdryer and flat screwdriver lever worked fine for me at first time and thin blade for second delid.

If the traces are ok you could use a hot air soldering station to fix it. They're pretty cheap on amazon. If you destroyed the chip a replacement ylod board from eBay would be good for parts. If you're unable to fix it, sorry for your loss.

I was using fishing line on this delid, although I don't recommend it. While it was able to cut through the thermal glue it was very slow and really takes a toll on your hands.
