It is a rare rare vocation, and don't think of it romantically. Few survive it. Peace is acquired when each person follows their own individual vocation, and in my case it was a beautiful stepping stone to another place God was callng me to. +
Have you seen the Monastic sisters of Bethlehem order? St Bruno is their spiritual father and they wear similar habits to the Carthusians. Bless you in your search. My daughter's saint name is St Roseline after the Carthusian nun saint.
I thought only angelic hosts sounded like this; but I see songs of praise on earth as they are sung in heaven. Beautiful forever, the holy Carthusian sisters have all my respect and love. Keep-a-going.
St. Bruno and your six companions who founded the Carthusian Order, Stephen of Châtillon, (Bishop of Diè, lived 1150-7 Sept. 1208), St. Hugh of Lincoln and all the Carthusian saints and martyrs pray for us sinner and the Church.
xanh01 Yes and no. I was a Carthusian for a while and it is certainly not "peaceful". It is a tremendous struggle with ones inner demons. The silence and solitude, not to mention the cold and spartan diet, are immensely difficult. There is of course peace in it- but its a very very hard won peace- very hard indeed!
bayreuth79 I pray you find peace now. Of course this life style is not for everybody. It requires a special call from the Almighty God. My great aunt is now 103 years old, she entered the Cloistered Carmelite convent when she was 16 yrs old. She always brings joys to us every time we visit her a very happy person. God bless whatever you do. Peace.
+bayreuth79 During a short ( 11-day ) visit to the Charterhouse of the Transfiguration in VT in 1981, I learned quickly what you mention. I was both filled with joy and the certainty that that life was not my calling! My best friend went on to become their beloved father superior and died there a number of years later. RIP Dom Francois. My calling was to marriage :)
As far as I know the Carthusian nuns are only in Europe on the continent France, Italy and Spain mostly. I tried my vocation with the monks many many years ago and there was talk of a Charterhouse for nuns opening in the USA but so far hasn't happened. A friend of mine who was a Japenese convert wanted to become a Carthusisn nun but was too old.
Hey, IMO, the very first word out of the mouths of any vowed religious should be "Jesus." With Whom are these people living? What is their Daily Bread? First Love demands protestations in song and word: "Who do you love?"
