If you prefer I could say all Christians at that time. The buildings Christians meet in now are often referred to as meeting halls. It is all in the context as to the meaning. It is true, the Apostles went to Synagogues on the Sabbath to preach Christ crucified. And went to houses of believers on Sunday, the first day, to preach Christ. As Paul said, to the Jew first then the gentiles. Sunday is the day of first fruits and Christ is the first of many. It is also true that Christianity is called a religion, when it is not. Christianity is a relationship but the world will call us by what it wants no matter what we say. They call us a Church, a religion and intolerant haters no matter how much we love them. What Jews don't understand is the law is the training ground for love. It's not about thou shalt not, it's about if you live according these laws you practice love your neighbor. This is why Jews have so much trouble with God, they worship the law and tradition, not God himself. Jesus answer to the question from the Pharisees, what is the first commandment? Answer, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul and all your strength and the second is like unto the first, love thy neighbor as thyself. On this all the law and the Prophets hang. You can pull apart sentences and wording all you want but you will miss the overall meaning of it. The old testament and the new testament are the same when taken in context. Both are a love letter from God to his creation. This is where people miss the mark. They see rules with punishment for bad behavior, when, if you do your best to obey Gods law you are blessed with a peaceable life. God doesn't expect us to be perfect, he expects us to try with all our heart. Obedience is good but starting and finishing our efforts with love IS God at work. In the end times, NOW, God promised to write the law on the hearts of believers, his people. That's because if you love you automatically obey the commandments. Jesus commandment to the church (believers) is to love one another. He did not say obey the law because love is the perfection of the law. When Judaism and Christianity are mixed you only get confusion because they will start to love the law not God. BTW, the gnostic gospels are used by people who try to disprove the true gospel while mixing them with history. Jesus warned us of these people. We are not to believe another gospel.
