The foundation of the Chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão dates back to the 7th century, to the Visigothic era and is a unique example of altimedieval religious architecture in Portugal.
The changes made during the Baroque era were the most evident. From the primitive temple remained the interior arrangement, of three naves, and the decoration of geometric base, of great artistic importance in the Iberian Peninsula in relation to other monuments of the same time.
In the 14th century, the chapel was in the possession of the Bishop of Porto, D. Afonso Pires, who is buried there in a Gothic tomb.
