I thought it would interesting to taste 3 Chardonnays in different price ranges together. Again, when I drink wines comparatively, it is never about a winner (as my palate may be different from other people) but about comparing and contrasting the wines. I find that helps me understand the wines and the grape varietal better.
The 3 wines are: Cambria 2021 Katherine's Vineyard Chardonnay, Little Engine 2017 Platinum Chardonnay & Blue Mountain Vineyards 2022 Estate Cuvee Chardonnay
Blue Mountain Vineyards 2022 Chardonnay: Blue Mountain is one of my favorite BC wineries. They are one of the few BC wineries who have not escalated prices exponentially and their wines still provide good value based on the quality. I like all their wines but their Chardonnay is a great example of a "peaches & cream" type of Chardonnay. The grapes come from 16-33 year old vines. All fruit is hand-harvested and whole cluster pressed. The wine is barrel fermented and aged 14months in new to 3 year old French oak barrels. Priced at $29.90 and available at some specialty liquor stores or their website bluemountainwi...
Cambria 2021 Katherine's Vineyard Chardonnay: Cambria is a pioneer in the winemaking region of the Santa Rita Hills in California and this wine represents their flagship Chardonnay produced from grapes from a single vineyard. The winery was established in 1986 by Barbara Banke and Jess Jackson. The wine is fermented in both stainless steel and barrels and represents a modestly price, slightly oaked California Chardonnay. It has a 90 point rating by Wine Spectator and it is priced at BC Liquor Stores at $38.99.
Little Engine Wines 2017 Platinum Chardonnay - Steven & Nicole French bought their first vineyard that is part of this estate in 2011 and released their first wines in 2016 so a relatively new winery but their Chardonnay are creating a buzz. This is their flagship Chardonnay only available their platinum club members. I believe it is priced at around $55 a bottle.
