When charging or troubleshooting air conditioning systems in low ambient conditions, it is important to understand the concept and methods of doing so. Check out this quick podcast on the subject anchor.fm/hvac.... In the video, an ICM condenser fan speed control was used with a thermistor. I had to troubleshoot and determine the best place for the thermistor positioning. Once the position was determined, the charge was adjusted to ensure optimal performance in low load conditions.

Hey...The refrigerant that you added ...will it affect the system in summer time or when the ambient temperature rises?

Great content. Thank you for posting. 1. The temperature-pressure relationship on which the operation of this regulator is based is only valid for mixture of gas + liquid. The location of te probe should be close to the end of condenser where no hot gas/superheated vapour can exist. Putting the sensor on the liquid side of the condenser should not cause problems, maybe raise the pressure lightly. 2. The sensor should not be affected by (temperature of) the air. Blocking air flow around it with e.g. some sillicone sealant could be a good idea. 3. The fan should not spin below 70F measured by the sensor but it looks like it did spin. Have you checked that the fan stops at 70F by putting the sensor to 70F and below? 4. It would be a good idea to disconnect the fan manually and check pressures as a first step to confirm that the controller can actually do its job. 5. Obviously, the 'heat-pump jumper" was set correctly.

Yes fan stops. Sensor position final location was in the coil out the outlet. The controller didn't perform well with the sensor on the liquid line and insulated on 3 different units.

We also rig units were I work with a cut in cut out pressure switch wired through a relay to achieve the similar outcome for low ambient conditions

I Installed this on a Trane 20 ton condenser and both of my motors over heated after 40 mins of run time. Spoke with tech support and confirmed that it was set up correctly. Was told that with that model unit I’d have to upgrade both the motors, add heat sinks, and rain guards.

Was the motors that burnt out ball bearing?
@jesuss4437
@jesuss4437 3 года назад
@@HVACKnowItAll yes. According to tech support they were ball bearing. They still worked after the cooled off.

For me just so I know it works and I don't want to be called back ICM makes a transducer that can be installed on the discharge .

I prefer pressure action on low ambient controls. I always add a freeze stat to the evaporator as well. I’ve also found TXV with a hard start kit for better in low ambient control. Depends on what the customer will pay for. Good video. Thanks and stay safe.

icm head pressure control does not come with the wire that connect the line 1 to the line 1 terminal. what kind of wire use to connect line 1 to the line 1 terminal?

@FORVERIMAGES

Pressure sensing is the only way to go, never been a fan of temp sensing for low ambiant control or fan cycling, pressure never lies.

That's why we don't use fan control in refrigeration system it shows the different by using a fan control txv doesn't get liquid like a head master control.

Air conditioning in winter time call the ambient conditions go down to Goodwill or a thrift shop and pick up a six man or eight man tent cut the bottom out set up a tent it’ll be nice and 90° in there and you could set your sub cooling and superheat as if it was summertime in Florida Are use a pressure switch I don’t like the thermistor

Does this ambient control kit need other accessories Such as a hard start kit or anything else? And does it matter if its a txv or piston coil?
@HVACKnowItAll
@HVACKnowItAll 3 года назад
Hard starts for locked up compressors or low voltage situations. Not needed in low ambient conditions. You'll need a crankcase heater for sure and possibly wind baffles.

Hey man hope everything is ok I am always watching your videos,I worked on a carrier motormaster low ambient control today same scenario,it’s tricky to set the right evaporating temperature right due to condenser fan constantly speeding up and down some times you will run under 32° evaporating temperature for seconds and it will go back up,specially if there is low load inside the room,you can correct me if I am wrong I know you have much more experience then me too
@HVACKnowItAll
@HVACKnowItAll 2 года назад
Yes difficult to set up for sure, it'd much easier if it was fan speed instead of fan cycle
