Public charging is an essential part of owning an EV for a huge number of people and the horror stories floating around the Internet come thick and fast. In this video, I show using a Charge Your Car (CYC) 50kW CCS public rapid charger to charge my 2020 MG ZS EV Exclusive.
These chargers can be accessed in a number of ways - in this video I use a BP Pulse RFID card which is available if you have the £7.85 a month subscription from them. Alternatively, you can use the CYC app to pay-as-you go or their RFID card for £20/year. I'm not sure if a ChargePlace Scotland card will work on these - given CYC (currently) operate that network.
With this and future videos, I hope to show the reality of EV ownership in the UK - the whole, unedited truth so that potential EV buyers can make their own mind up!

Looks like the tariff for this charger is £4.50/hour right enough - despite the BP Pulse app saying otherwise, the monthly statement from them shows that as what I’ve paid. Nice and clear 🙄. In other news, it seems this charger has been removed pending an upgrade! 😳

Ah I recognise that sense of relief, shared by all EV drivers, when the chargepoint decides to work. Strangely I've never felt relief when a petrol pump works and they have far more moving parts.

They need to stop will all the apps and connectivity and rubbish. A card payment terminal and an onboard computer should be more than enough.

Roll on the day when all these apps are history. All anyone should need at ANY chargepoint is a contactless debit card.

I honestly don’t think we’ll see that day, but I do think it will be greatly simplified. I suspect that the future is a roaming RFID card like the ones offered by Chargepoint or Shell Recharge that can be used on loads of different chargers tand you just pick the one that works best for you, like a business does with a fuel card.

Owning an electric vehicle isn't an issue, but needing a smartphone or computer, cards, RFID card, until this video, I've never heard of one, I like things simple, I don't and won't own a smartphone, I don't understand them, I can do very little on a computer, I prefer to pay cash as I don't like debt and what I have in my pocket, I would pay on debit card but reluctantly, this is being made so complicated, why can't you charge in the same way that we fuel up at the pumps? I'm an older person, computers weren't taught in schools, kids are used to technology, they often teach their parents, I don't have kids or anyone who can show me, so, forgetting purchase price of the vehicle which at present I can't afford, even if I could, I would want a simple pay as you go system in the same way I pay for my diesel, my home electric, this is all too complex for the older generation

@@andrewgage6942 I get exactly how you feel. I do work in IT, so am OK with how to use an app if I needed to, but that doesn't mean I want to. I prefer all day to use my debit card. My mum would not have a clue if she had to use an app. It is possible though - there are charging companies that do offer contactless, the best of which are Instavolt and Osprey. You just stick to using those. If those other companies want to make it difficult for me to transact with them, then I won't bother and just use companies that make it easy. Their loss.

This is the charger I use when visiting my parents in Gloucester. We meet up here and go to a Toby Carvery which is just a five minute walk away. After that, there’s a nice short walk down a renovated section of the Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal which is a couple of hundred feet behind the charger. I arrive from London so have a warm battery and low SoC so tend to get between 40 and 50kW. Glad for the confirmation that it’s still working!

I've been a Polar +/BP Pulse subscription payer for 2 years. Over the last year I've not been able to use their lone charger in my home town, as it is inaccessible due to being located in a restaurant car park. Maybe I should have cancelled my subscription!

Yeah their charger siting strategy leaves a lot to be desired - they seem to have an awful lot in locations that they have no control over in terms of maintained access etc.

Guess the pub being shut reduces the demand for parking there! Do see a few reports of it being ICEd on Zap-Map though.

Frustrating. I assume they’re owned by the local council (most CYC chargers are) - might be worth trying to vent in that direction.

I dont mind there being many companies running these sort of charge points. Like many, its just the that the payment is not a universal one. As a side rant, I dont like battery leases as much as I dont like subscriptions. Just imagine how many people have died in the past year and how much money was taken from their accounts for services that they obviously will not use and by the time the families (if any) get around to sort financials of these people how many more payments have these dead people made. Im sorry for the morbidity.

I'll stick with Ecotricity or Instavolt. Get my home supply from Ecotricity so get a discount and they are on the major routes and while not totally reliable there is always another not far away, or contactless from Instavolt, never had a fail at an Instavolt. Can't be doing with paying multiple subscriptions for something I rarely use.

I'm collecting my first EV car (Audi E-tron) next week and we are going to visit Northumberland mid April. E-tron 50 hasn't got amazing range so its gonna be my first experience of motorway charging. Going to plan the route with zap map and avoid ecotricity at all cost :D InstaVolt, Osprey and BP Pulse seems to be a good choice on my way up to Northumberland. We are staying in Alnwick and I noticed they got supposedly free Charge Your Car chargers there. Two 50kW ones right next to where we gonna stay so fingers crossed. I've signed up for BP Pulse and got the RFID card but also paid for £20 for the CYC just in case I need to use it in Scotland.

I don’t believe that you can use the CYC ones in Alnwick with an app. They are pretty old units. There is also a Hubsta unit at the Infirmary and a CYC at Willowburn. There was alnother CYC unit on the edge of town but this was replaced by Polar and has recently been replaced again.

@@DominikZalewski85 Sorry just wanted to alert you to some fairly old kit. The Osprey charger as far as I know is operational and fairly new. Not used too frequently. There is also Shell unit down in Morpeth at the Shell petrol station. Craster has a free to use unit in the car park but only 7kWH. Bamburgh I am told also has a charge unit in the main car park but I have never seen/used it. It could be BP Pulse

paying the 20 pound a year has the big advantage that many chargers in scotland may have no or very poor internet / wifi connection so the app will fail to connect. having the card gives much easier start charger and that it does work on other chargers
@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes 3 года назад
Yeah there’s no doubt it’s the way to go if you are regularly going to use CYC or ChargePlace Scotland chargers. As far as I know it’s not possible to access the latter using the Pulse RFID card so it’s definitely essential for those in Scotland.

Looks like I will be doing my first CCS rapid charge later this month after 7 months of ZS EV ownership. There are a couple of CYC chargers on my route but I am avoiding them as they don't take contactless according to Zap Map. I have plenty of other contactless options en route so I'm opting for those instead.
@ModernHeroes

Good call - I don’t think I would have bothered with this one if I didn’t already have a BP Pulse card to start it. Having to faff with the CYC app etc probably isn’t worth it.

Great videos , thanks very much for all the Information you give, it's been a great help to me especially the public charging Information as this will be the only way i will be able to charge any electric car i purchase. Can i ask your opinion on the New MG Marvel R that has just been announced , do you have any Info as to it's release in the UK and the cost, especially as the government have taken away the plug in grant from more expensive EV's, do you think this will make the MG a more popular choice now?
@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes 3 года назад
There’s absolutely no further information about the Marvel R beyond the European press release the other day (which I covered in my most recent video). MG UK haven’t said anything about it at all as of yet. I don’t think the grant changes will have much impact, to be honest.

@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes 3 года назад
Cost of charging varies wildly depending on where you do it - charging at home from empty to full on a tariff like Octopus Go costs as little as £2. Insurance is very cheap for me - cheaper than any other car I’ve owned but of course premiums are very much dependent on circumstance.

If you had a pickup on the bottom of the car with brushes with a twin metal strip in the road you could charge continually. Oh wait, that’s scaletrix... continue to be shocked by the poor support of EV vehicles in the UK. Single point chargers in the back of public car parks is unacceptable. Unfortunately a bank of high KWh output chargers isn’t sustainable long term to make ev efficient for longer range Driving unless you own a Tesla who have spent £££££ on their infrastructure - EV are ok for short range (200miles or less) cars but for longer range I really don’t see them as viable until you have banks of chargers at bespoke charging areas or complete battery swaps using a plug and play battery design to suit all EV cars asis used on forklift trucks currently..

@andrewgage6942
@andrewgage6942 3 года назад
@@norfolkdragons866 that's assuming you want to do 200 miles in one trip, if I were to own an electric vehicle, I'm unable to have a chargepoint at home, I'd be reliant on public charging infrastructure, I work long and unsociable hours, I can use a slow charging point at Asda which is 20 miles away from where I live, or, I would be relying on the one solitary car park which closes at 6pm in winter and 8pm in the summer, my average working day is 15 hours, add on travel time, anything up to 17 hours away from home, I may not get home until 5pm, an hour of charging plus parking charges (I believe that it's around £2 an hour, electric vehicle ownership at present isn't so cheap, charging once a week would make sense, but in my case, I drive 350 miles a week just for work, there's nothing at the moment that even fits the bill for me, well not that I could afford either new or used.
