Public charging is an essential part of owning an EV for a huge number of people and the horror stories floating around the Internet come thick and fast. In this video, I show using an Osprey Charging (formerly known as Engenie) 50kW CCS public rapid charger to charge my 2020 MG ZS EV Exclusive.
Osprey have recently released a new mobile app for payment and live status monitoring so I decided to put it to the test - contactless payment is also available for those who like to keep things simple!
With this and future videos, I hope to show the reality of EV ownership in the UK - the whole, unedited truth so that potential EV buyers can make their own mind up!

Very helpful to a newbie, thank you. Seems it’ll be easier when they are all pay & go on the credit card. I’m sure it’ll come in the future

Another helpful update, thanks 👍 Seems pretty painless, in a 40-minutes-sitting-in-a-pub-car-park sort of way - although presumably you could spend it inside the pub, if Boris lets you.

Exactly the reason why I think these Osprey chargers that are in Marstons pub car parks are a decent proposition (Boris / COVID permitting) - being able to grab a quick pub lunch whilst charging!

@@ModernHeroes Yorkshire EV club used the Bobbin Carrier Marstons pub in Bradford last year for their EV meet as it was great for charging and everyone grabbed a drink and some grub:-)

@@ModernHeroes - on your recommendation I joined Osprey and went to the Marston Stirling site...Day 1. couldn't get the app to work spoke to them on the phone and the girl was very good albeit the CCS gun refused to dislodge itself ! also the app wasn't helpful wasn't talking to me :-( we persevered to no avail said I would come back following day as hypothermia was setting in.Day 2. tried different unit but again the gun refused to budge undeterred I went back today (day 3) following an evening chat from my home comfort and was told to phone on arrival and we would jointly go through the procedure which we did - SUCCESS! I will continue to use their service as the help is 2nd to none + its cheaper using the app to fire up the "machine" Thx again for your advice, as a virgin EV.er I need all the help you can give MH. keep up the good work... also love my MG

@@binomad1 I’m so glad you’re happy with your MG and also sorry to hear you’ve had trouble with Osprey - it worked flawlessly for me as you can see. Sounds like their support are properly on it though - and that’s definitely what matters! What was the rate of charge like - bit quicker than I saw here?

Another good vlog! I noticed your private number plate and wondered what it stands for if it's your initials?

I guess one upside of any app, in these COVID days, is that you only have to touch the charge cable.

The problem with apps is that you need to have and pay for a smartphone. Some people don’t use, want or need a mobile phone.

Pretty small cross section of those paying tens of thousands of pounds for an electric car though, I reckon.

Can they charge two cars at once (CCS and chademo)? I could get the bonnet app to communicate, any ideas?
@ModernHeroes

One DC output at a time on these. They can charge on AC at the same time as either CCS or Chad though.

£2 A LITRE FOR DIESEL NOW! Was it wise to sell the VW Caddy Max Diesel and go for the MG5 ev long range sw. We were going to keep it and have a Fiat500e for local trips, but the dog could not fit in the back. The MG5 is nice ... and the same price. Keeping it in Eco Mode, up to now it is working out at 4.6 miles per kwh what ever that means. Can't get my head round all these figures. The cost per kw is 49p now at Osprey since you did the review.

Osprey have today announced £1 per kWh for App users and contactless. That’s now more expensive than refuelling a ICE car. Speaking as a EV driver and someone that produces TCO analysis encouraging fleets to move to EVs for a living. I don’t think you will be using them again.
@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes Год назад
I don’t understand this viewpoint - charging provision isn’t at the point where you can just decide not to use whatever’s available. If an Osprey charger is on route and working it’ll get used just like any other.
@EVil-ob8in
@EVil-ob8in Год назад
@@ModernHeroes I’m sure others will follow suit. Until that happens, it’s about planning journeys to avoid the most expensive charging stations and not just rocking up at the first available for those that are interested in keeping their running cost low.
@Knightlore10
@Knightlore10 Год назад
@@EVil-ob8in Exactly. It’s not a strategy to stumble across the first charging point you see. When travelling long distances, I know before I arrive which charging stations to use. It definitely won’t be Osprey until they reduce their price.

So were you using the £5 monthly subscription service for this? Their app states can get the 5p off tariff without subscribing, and can get the 11p off if choose £5 monthly subscription. I presumed if it was the non subscription then you log in and then tap contactless...? £5 monthly then they bill you as you mentioned as have ya card info
@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes 3 года назад
No - the subscription hadn’t launched when I filmed this. To use the PAYG option in the app at 31p you sign up and link a card to your account, it bills you for what you use monthly.
@mwill101
@mwill101 3 года назад
@@ModernHeroes oh so ya still have to link card even for that, I see! Thanks for clearing that up, and I’ve just filled out the govt consultation form for EV chargers you mentioned in other vid, I mentioned should be a £5 max cap for pre authorisation about 7 times. 👍🏻

Why cant we have a universal payment method - a 3rd party that the user pays then forward the payment to which ever network you are using ?
@migsvensurfing6310
@migsvensurfing6310 3 года назад
When you calculate cost ev vs ice do you also count the time used where you could earn money instead ? Do you also include money that you normally wouldnt spend in the waiting time? Should you ? and if not, why not. Im defenetely not against ev or ice cars but in a real world...bla bla ... you know.
@ModernHeroes
@ModernHeroes 3 года назад
I hear you. If you were constantly making journeys where you needed to charge along the way, it would be a very real consideration. The majority of EV journeys are done with a full battery from home though - where you don’t take any more time!

@@ModernHeroes Probably. If youre family is living far away the situation could be different. I dont own a car but may buy one sooner or later, I need it to tow a trailer. My research however on used ev's shows very few has a tow thingy (dont know what it is called in english, sorry) Therefoe I have watched all of your videos (and also other channels)...and I always gives a 👍 for the producers great efforts. For my situation I think a petrol burner will be the way to go for now, especially since I cant afford a new car. Thanks for your answer, I think you are very honest in your evaluations. Please stay that way.

Looks a good app if they bill you once a month I am doing the school run in my focus estate 1.6 petrol put £38 and only get a 311 range dont think that will last two weeks how much do you think it woud cost with mg ev car just woud like to know
@ModernHeroes

It would cost roughly £30 using chargers like this exclusively, £12 on a pretty expensive home energy tariff and £4 on a cheap one!

Not all public chargers cost the same as this. Depends what’s in your local area really. Some slower destination chargers are free including a load of them in Tesco car parks - you might find you’ll be able to charge in more places than you think! Check out Zap-Map which will show what chargers there are near you and how much they cost etc www.zap-map.com 😊

In my 24kWh Leaf, 311 miles would cost £24.10 @ the 31p/kWh app rate on an Osprey charger. On a PodPoint Rapid the same mileage would only cost £17.88 (@23p/kWh) so it pays to keep an eye on your local rapid chargers! Before we had a home charger fitted I had a Polar membership (£7.85/month) and used to regularly charge up on a 7kW post in the local Waitrose car park for 'free' (0p/kWh). At 17p/kWh which was our home tariff at the time it meant that if we used over 46.17kWh a month (just over 2 full charges on our 24kWh Leaf) anything above that was cheaper than charging at home on the granny (three pin) cable. I used to drop the Leaf off at Waitrose and go for an evening cycle for a couple of hours and come back to an additional 50% charge. The membership also gave access to a couple of local Polar rapid chargers at 15p/kWh for members, we did use these occasionally but because they're located at a local garden centre they're locked up from 7pm - 7am (handy!). Now we have a 7kW PodPoint home charger and we're on Octopus Go it gets charged for 5p/kWh overnight. On the rare occasions I need to rapid charge our local Lidl has a PodPoint 50kW rapid which costs 23p/kWh. We have an Osprey rapid 400m from our house but even with the 5p/kWh discount for using the app it's still 8p/kWh more expensive than the PodPoint rapid.

Just got an EV for the first time. It is just a local runabout so will be charged at home most of the time. Being new to the game I thought I would research public charging in case we ever use the car for a trip beyond its total range. After about an hour I just gave up. What a confused mess!! I don't know which chargers I can use. Do I need to have multiple memberships to access the widest possible number of chargers? Can I just turn up with a debit card and pay? Will the charger be in use or even working.........? There are not even that many around where I live in North East Surrey so not exactly in the middle of nowhere! Absolutely zero chance I would have an EV as my main car until the public charging mess is sorted out. If you have an EV as your main car you have to spend way too long planning for top ups etc rather than just getting in the car and going.

It is a mess, I’m not going to try and say otherwise. Look for InstaVolt and Osprey and you won’t go far wrong though.
