Hi 👋 Carl My name is Carl too. I have always liked my name. I have a large music collection. From the 1960s to the early 2000s. I'm in my sixties. I like the Staple Singers, they were popular in the 1970s. They had a couple of songs that topped the American Billboard charts. I like the Doors, Jim Morrison was a fantastic frontman for the group. My favorite song by them is Touch Me from 1968 /69. Rolling Stones are amazing , and they have a new album out. I like Elvis Costello too. I had his album This Years Model back in 1978 on vinyl. The song Pump it Up is a good song on it. I do like Dwight Yokam, and i have a cd titled Just lookin for a Hit. Little Sister a song sung by Elvis Presley and Ry Cooder he does on it. You mentioned Chet Baker, i like his trumpet playing and his vocals.

Hi Carl. I remember you commenting on one or two of my previous videos ... I didn't have anything by the Staple Singers and then found a couple of CDs and an LP in just a few days. Mavis Staples is extraordinary! ... I just read today in my newspaper that the Rolling Stones have almost finished the next album after 'Hackney Diamonds' too! ... Elvis Costello is one of my all-time favourites. Thanks for commenting, Carl

" Watch Your Step" is a favorite. Eponymous is fantastic, and another Cd I played , more than often ! 👍

JT, I didn't say in the video that I actually picked up my copy of 'The Doors Collection' in a charity shop a couple of years ago. I think I only paid 50 pence or a pound for it; the shop classed it as one CD. It's nice to have the studio albums in one handy little package in remastered sound ... I thought the last few tracks on 'More Hot Rocks' let the comp down. Certainly on my CD the sound quality on these early tracks was poor ... 'Girls Girls Girls' is a perfect comp. A musical genius? Quite possibly. Same goes for early REM. Magical stuff ... I'll post a comment on your Vinyl Tag video in the next few days. As with a lot of RU-vid videos, I watched it on my TV where I can't post a comment. Yes, it was interesting that we both chose 'Adventure'. It's only in the last couple of years that I've gone back to that album and realised how good it is. I saw the original line-up live and was in awe of them.

@Carl Tweed What I draw from your comment is how good Cd's generally sound ! When I first saw REM performing material from Chtonic Town, I was so impressed.. then, I didn't pay attention to them until 1986.. then it was all about them for me , for years ! Thanks for this message, Carl !

Totally dig your eclectic taste in music! I love thrifting for second hand recordings. Today I got r.e.m.'s first three releases, murmur, reckoning, and fables of the reconstruction, for about $10us! Also picked up the B-52s Cosmic Thing and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Love the thrill of finding hidden gems every now and then.

Yes, the studio version of 'No Woman No Cry' lacks any energy. I may have to re-evaluate my feelings about live recordings ... That Hoyt Axton CD was an excellent introduction to his musical career. The label it is on (Raven) has put out some quality reissues over the years. It was a surprise to find that CD in a charity shop. I love the track 'Evangelina'.

Great breakdown, info and analysis on each of the CDs you presented. I have many of the ones you have and still listen to them. Love the Elvis Costello Girls Girls Girls CD. I read in Elvis Costello's book where he said that Chet Baker wanted to be paid upfront and in cash for playing on "Shipbuilding." It was one of the last things he did. Great show again Carl!

Great stuff. When I visited the UK - loved the Charity Shops - amazing cheap finds that you show so well. Love your descriptions. Marley Tuff Gong releases are great - remastered with bonus tracks. Stones More Hot Rocks one of my favorite Stones compilations - fantastic - it may grow on you. I always felt Dylan Saved is way more interesting than reviewers claim. Girls Girls Girls is a great find. Really comprehensive. REM has many compilations but Eponymous still remains my favorite - genius indeed. I'm not familiar with many of these finds but seem really cool. Great video and great finds as always.

Hi Alan. Great to hear from you. I didn't think the sound quality on the 'More Hot Rocks' CD was very good - certainly on the early tracks from 1964. I'll be giving it another lesson ... I think Bob Dylan 'Saved' is wonderful. I love the female backing vocals. Dylan's voice has never sounded better ... 'Girls Girls Girls' and 'Eponymous' are perfect comps, and the Beat's CD too.

Hi Carl, another great selection of CD finds and as usual a lot I'd like to own myself. I've never heard that Throwing Muses album (I'll check it out later). I was a fan back in the late 80's and recently bought 'The Real Ramona' off ebay, which is a really good album from '92 I think. Not heard the name Dwight Yoakam for a long time, in fact had forgotten about him, but would also like to check that CD out. The Elvis Costello and Madness albums look like good additions to any collection. Like you I'm a fan of REM. I had all the early albums back in the day, so never bothered to buy Eponymous at the time, but now I think I would like to have it to have all those IRS hits in one place and also to complete my REM collection on CD.

Hi Gary. Yes, a few of my favourites this time round, including two artists I'd consider geniuses ... Throwing Muses took me a couple of listens to appreciate. They were definitely better earlier on in their career, but that's the same for most bands ... Dwight Yoakam is an artist I would never have bought full-price. I always thought he was too commercial; but his hits from the 90's are pretty good and not too slick-sounding ... The Elvis Costello comp is one of his best, in my opinion ... R.E.M. was my favourite band in the 80's/90's. That 'Eponymous' comp is worth picking up, even if you have all their studio albums, as it has a couple of alternate versions (such as the Hibtone single version of 'Radio Free Europe' and the original vocal take of 'Gardening At Night').

I've never heard 'saved' but from what I understand it's less Bible bashing than slow train coming which I do know. I will search for a copy. Bob would've been considered a messianic believer in Yeshua but where he is with God now I'm unsure. I saw Kristen Hersch play in a community centre last year she was excellent mixing new solo and older band stuff. Cheers, Martin.

@carltweed942 Год назад
Hi Martin. Rock music critics and fans were very conservative in their tastes when Dylan made his three gospel albums. No one would bat an eyelid if he recorded them now. I always felt he was primarily exploring his love of gospel music. 'Covenant Woman' and 'Pressing On' have become firm favourites since hearing 'Saved' ... Robert Zimmerman is very much an enigma. He doesn't give much away about himself when he is playing the role of Bob Dylan. Thanks for watching and commenting, Carl

I agree: it is strange to hear the studio version of No Woman No Cry. The live version is better! I still haven't been brave enough to listen to Saved. I guess I was fearing the worst. Best of the Beat looks essential. Nice finds, Carl 🙂

@carltweed942 Год назад
Hi Brian. Yes, I can't believe I'd never heard the studio version of 'No Woman No Cry' before; it sounded so flat. I'm not normally a fan of live tracks, but the live version at the Rainbow Theatre in London is sprinkled with magic ... Maybe I've got it wrong, but to me Bob Dylan's 'Saved' feels like he's in love with gospel music rather than having truly become a born-again Christian. I don't see it as any different to other great songwriters like Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Richard Thompson and Randy Newman that are often inspired by religious imagery in their songwriting. If you're brave enough, have a listen to 'Covenant Woman' and 'Pressing On' ... The Beat was a revelation. What a fabulous run of hit singles. Thanks as always for watching and commenting.

First hope you are feeling better. Bob Dylan and Marley, R.E.M, Madness, The Beat another good haul again, but I have to ask a few questions. Do you put them all in new cases as they all seem to be pristine ? Whenever I get cheap cds they are covered in dust, price and hype stickers. Also what is your criteria for the disc condition ? I tend to take a risk with small marks on the disc but steer away if they are obviously marked. I have started to put them in plastic sleeves now to give me more space as well. Cheers
@carltweed942
@carltweed942 Год назад
Hi Philip. I'm feeling much better thanks ... You ask a good question about CD cases. Nearly all CD cases in charity shops are damaged or grubby, even when the actual CD and packaging is clean. That probably puts quite a few people off buying them. What I do is also buy brand-new sealed CDs whenever I see them for 25 pence or less. (One of the shops I go to regularly gets multiple copies of new CDs for 10 pence each.) I can then transfer the CDs I've bought to a new case. The CDs that are left over are then donated to another charity shop. If I don't have enough new cases, I put the CDs in little plastic wallets. You maybe noticed that a couple of the double-CDs this time round were in plastic wallets. I think the classic jewel case looks very smart, but like you I also appreciate plastic wallets for saving space ... With the Hoyt Axton CD, I was even able to peel off the hype sticker from the grubby case and stick it onto a clean case ... I don't have a CD cleaner. If a CD surface has scratches, I'll not buy it. The ideal is for the CD, packaging and jewel case to all be in as-new condition ... P.S. I'm a bit obsessive about inlay trays too. I don't like the really cheap ones that you can easily bend.
