@Jack Burton Barkley was a mediocre defender but certainly did try and unlike Harden, he made to the finals. He spent most of his prime playing on terrible 76er teams. He had his limitations but don't sell him so short. Offensively, he was better and more versatile than Malone.

Today's G-League is FULL of players who would be important NBA starters back then. Oliver Miller would have to play in China today, yet he was a MAJOR player on this team that competed for the championship back then.
