#TalkAboutCharlesBonnet
Some people with sight loss experience visual hallucinations, known as Charles Bonnet Syndrome. Many worry unnecessarily that there is something wrong with their mind. It is important to understand that the hallucinations are a natural experience and not a sign of mental illness.
Up to half of all people with macular degeneration are thought to experience visual hallucinations at some time. They are more likely to occur if both eyes are affected by sight loss. Charles Bonnet hallucinations can be simple unformed flashes of light, colours or shapes. However, many people see geometrical grids and lattices. Other people also report seeing landscaped gardens or vistas, animals, people or other vivid images.

It happened to me just 4 weeks ago...I was diagnosed with MS which triggered optic neuritis...it completely took my vision...As my vision deteriorated that's when the Charles Bonnet began... I saw patterns ...and cartoon like characters...and trees blowing in the wind... it also filled in things that made sense ...for instance I knocked over an empty bottle of water and when I looked at the ground the entire floor was wet even though the bottle was completely empty...Thought I was going crazy...But as vision improved, Bonnet went away...I do believe that each person sees a manifestation of their subconscious mind...Thankfully mind were all pleasant but still troubling nevertheless...If you are currently experiencing this phenomenon dont worry...it will pass as your vision improves...

My gosh, I'm 46 and I've only just now heard of this. Bless us all for the sheer range and volume of tough things we go through 😔. It's such a big deal to have discovered the source and commonplace nature of these experiences...how many untold millions throughout history have felt shocked or scared or become isolated by lack of general understanding? Thanks so much for helping to educate us.

I'm a telephone buddy for Independent Age and I'm friends with a lovely, elderly lady who suffers from this terrible illness. The experiences she tells about her Charles Bonnet Syndrome are like something out of a horror movie! I had never heard of this condition before today and it's so sad to see such a young person going through this. I hope more research is done on how to cure this syndrome, or at least make people's lives more enjoyable and more able to cope with it.

you said you're friends with someone who has it and she tells you stories but then you said" I had never heard of this condition before today". so does this mean your friend didn't know what she had or what it was called.

At times when I was young and had the flu with high fever, I would see grinning scary faces in the walls and in the air. It was so frightening! Then my mom came in and turned the lights brighter and talked to me which helped.

I’ve got the simpler form, I see patterns of shadow that cover everything in my view, at night I keep spotting a form that looks like a person made of shadow that is sitting near me though.

The shadow person is a very common hallucination; have no fear. Most people project their fear of strangers and hate of people onto shadow people but they're entirely what you make of them. An old fiend visiting you from a long time ago, maybe a friendly neighbor that you used to talk to a lot in the past.....whatever you make of them

do you hear things too like with schizophrenia patients?
@yourlocaldrugaddict2668
@yourlocaldrugaddict2668 3 года назад
No, people with Charles bonnet syndrome only see these things because they are losing their vision. It’s curable and depending on the person, it’s easy to tell what is a vision and what is not. Schizophrenia symptoms can be reduced but can’t be cured, and with those hallucinations, you can’t just make them go away.
@dr.owiee.g.5816
@dr.owiee.g.5816 3 года назад
No. The hallucinations (sensing-in this case sense of sight- things that are not there) is limited to the sense of sight. In fact there is no cognitive impairment or any decrease in mental state unlike in schizophrenia. This is just the brain attempting to fill up images where the sight is failing. So unlike in schizo, these people know that what they are seeing is not real no matter how real it looks.
@bravepigster

For the condition itself , there s no cure, the brain has to adapt to vision loss. And for those who would like to know what its like , I also wish there were some sort of simulation. Maybe there is, i will look for it

I heard a story earlier the day i posted this comment were a man had a side-effect of diabetes that caused him to lose much of his vision. he though he was going insane but he eventually learned that it was Charles Bonnet syndrome and to make the visions disappear he close his eyes and slowly counted to five. one reoccurring vision was a tall female wearing snazzy clothing and a fedora that covered her eyes and nose. she wore dirty white gloves and had long thin twitching fingers. her smile was irregularly wide and stretched from ear to ear. her skin was a grayish and she had a 3rd arm sprouting from her back. this arm had three fingers on it. well at first he merely used his technique and it seemingly worked so the next day he went to a bar with his friends and saw her when returning. this time when he did the technique she appeared only a foot from his face. he decided to call his friend for comfort. they relaxed together and had some more beer/booze. they even named the visualized woman Helen. the next day he returned home at night and plopped into his bed he opened his eyes to see Helen but simply stated that he was not afraid and clicked out the lights before saying "good night, Helen." but after he described hearing a chilling female voice reply, "good night." to hear the explanation contact me at aaliyahsilver1.000@gmail.com
