Charles Koechlin (1867-1950): Symphony No. 2 op.196 (1943--44)
London Symphony Orchestra, Constantin Silvestri-conducting
Koechlin wrote several symphonies, two of which are already on RU-vid: the No. 1, op.57bis (orchestral version, 1926, of String Quartet No.2) and The Seven Stars Symphony op.132 (1933). The Symphony No. 2 was his last effort at composing in this form.

This symphony is very beautiful: noble ideas, rich harmony, solidity of form, brillant orchestration. Begninning by a long, noble and slow movement which deploys its tones from the sound of the strings is a great idea. Why do we never hear it in our concert halls - even here, in France?

I don't think that Koechlin's music is easy to get into. What he is doing is not obvious, and that's one of the reasons why I really like his work. On repeated listenings, one keeps finding new things in his compostions. I have the old recording of his Seven Stars Symphony, but didn't know this one. My thanks to JK Stevenson for posting it!

This work was written during 2 nd WW and it reflects the atmosphere of that time fantastically well. All works by Koechlin are gems. This one, in particular.

This is really beautiful. I like the majestic and mystical conclusions. If you like grandiose yet mystical conclusions to large symphonies I recommend two - Earnest Bloch's Symphony in C Maj. and Albrich Magnard's 4th Symphony.

His piano music is very elegant and warmly rich. I think there is some biography of his life.

1/ Fugue sur un sujet d'Ernest Le Grand 2/ Scherzo. L âme libre et fantasque. 3/ Andante - suite de six chorals (two alternative chorals exist - not included here) 4/Fugue modale sur un sujet de Catherine Urner 5/Final Very little is known or available online about Ernest Le Grand ( Nantes 13-12-1870 - Paris 31-10-1955). He was a student of Fauré together with Koechlin. Catherine Urner has a Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_Murphy_Urner I'm curious about the history of this (1967) Silvestri recording. Who (or what) prompted/sponsored it? Did Silvestri know Koechlin? Who was/were the ondist(e)s? There's 1 onde in the scherzo, there should be 4 in the Fugue modale and 2 in the finale! Was Ginette Martenot invited? The first movement is an Andante presque adagio The second movement is based on themes from a suite for cor anglais op.185 The third movement, Andante, is composed of 6 chorals: 1= Requête à l'inconnaissable" - La douleur humaine (Request to the Unknowable - Human pain) 2= Aegri somnia (Patient's dreams) 3= Pour la consolation des pauvres âmes ( For the consolation of poor souls) 3 bis = apparently an alternative for this choral exists: "La mer sereine" - Calm sea 4= Les goélands sur la mer - (Gulls on the sea) 4 bis = alternatif "Le vaisseau calme" - (The calm ship) for string quartet only! 5= Berceuse marine ( for 3 horns and strings) 6= Vers la cime (Towards the summit) The Fugue modale on a theme by Catherine Urner exists in two versions: one for orchestra and 4 ondes Martenot, one for orchestra without the ondes, but with 2 saxophones, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and piano. It is an allegretto "gai et allégé de toute ombre". The mighty "Final" ( allegro moderato) is based on a theme that Koechlin qualifies as "lumière pure" - pure light! Koechlin's output is criminally underrated - thank you for uploading this. Where on earth did you find this recording!? I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction!

This composers time must surely come. A unique, individual and significant talent with something to say that was different from his compatriots. What is the 'electronic' keyboard I can hear at 20'.17"? You cant do that on a Theremin or Ondes Martenot!
