He's got big ones for attempting this piece at a competition.. Never a popular piece to perform, yet his execution is refreshingly refined.. There is a certain depth of musical maturity here, have a listen.
He plays this with so much ease and yet packs it with hair raising electricity! I like this Artist for his depth of comprehension in what Chopin is telling us in this piece! It is clear and heart permeating! A wonderful control of movement and exceptional transmission of the emotional state of the Composer at the time of creation! I enjoy the flow he gives this stream of sound and the intensity with which he renders the intent! Beautifully performed! BRAVO!
+Camille Delorme .... well he did win silver, but I still consider Aimi Kobayashi to be much better than Richard Hamelin by strides! Aimi is unbeatable when it comes to giving us the true heart of Chopin.... So yes, Charles is a good pianist but Aimi is a Fabulous Pianist and I don't consider Charles to be anywhere near silver medal in this competition. There were others who totally outperformed him like Aimi Kobayashi and several others. Charles didn't perform well in his final. He played way too fast..... so much so that the orchestra had trouble keeping up with him. I do like his way of playing nonetheless, since he is a good pianist regardless of his competition performance. He has a particular talent and a good sense of music. However that being said, I still would not say he was deserving of a medal but he got silver, whereas Aimi should have gotten Silver and she got nothing which is ridiculous. She deserved so much more than second row..... In my mind and my observational assessment, Aimi Kobayashi WON Silver.... they just didn't give it to her because she is Japanese.... that is my honest opinion and the competition score sheets confirm my view.
+ Richard Deschenes => "they just didn't give it to her because she is Japanese". Where in the score sheets do you find confirmation for such a contention?
WOW, THIS RONDO IS SO CHARMING AND DELIGHTFUL, AND SO DEFTLY HANDLED BY RICHARD HAMELIN. IT IS PURE HAPPINESS IN MUSIC. I NEVER HEARD A PIECE QUITE LIKE IT WITH ALL THE MAZURKAS AND WALTZES ETC. IT´S A ONE OFF.
For comparison - youtu. be/. F8GlqejoH-I - but bear in mind that the piano in that recording was a Steinway, with specially lightened action, and the performer had had 50 years more experience!
Can't say I disliked this interpretation; even though the last part was fast, it's still melodic enough to recognize it. +props to the uploader, you guys did great job
I have only ever seen Horowitz perform this piece so I am very impressed. One more note..if you listen to the 1974 Horowitz it is amazing that Horowitz's Steinway really pounds the notes through and the recording technique seem much better than this recording, I take nothing away from this amazing performance , it's simply inspiring, but I am surprised that the recording method Horowitz had back in 74' seemed much better, if I am wrong take a listen to the Horowitz version and let me know. Possibly because the Horowitz video is in his NY flat not in concert setting.
