Julien Bret plays Charles Tournemire's improvisation on "Victimae Paschali Laudes" (as reconstituted by Maurice Duruflé) on the 1890 Cavaillé-Coll organ in the Abbey Church of Saint Ouen, Rouen.
I made a pilgrimage to St Ouen just to hear this instrument and the acoustics of this Abbey. It was worth every mile and was rewarded so.many times over. Hearing this recording brings it all back. Thank you
Stunning Tournemire Easter hymn improv, thankfully noted for posterity by Maurice Durufle from a 78 rpm recording. Embodies the victory of Jesus' resurrection and victory over the evil which caused him to be crucified. Julian Bret's wonderful rendition on this superb Cavaille-Coll instrument deserves to be played again and again. Each Easter Sunday after having experienced the totally uninspiring songs at church I play this to actually capture the glory which should be celebrated on the day.
Exquisite performance. Tournemire is the most mystical of organ composers and Mr. Bret captures the tension of the mysterium extremely well. After all, these works are about the battle between formidable dark forces and the forces of transcendence and ascension. This tension of opposing forces is beautifully portrayed with, of course, a rousing victory in the end.
Another beautiful recording of a Julien Bret masterful performance at Saint Ouen - thank you so much for sharing! Any chance of a CD reference? been searching for a while now and cannot find any published recordings of Julien Bret at Saint Ouen, though i think he premiered here. Any hints would be greatly appreciated!
