According to Singer's commentary, the whole point of the chess match was to show that Xavier was so smart psychically that he could checkmate Erik using just his pawns, summing up how things ultimately played out in the film.

@@tigqc he didn't use just his pawns though. He used his bishop or queen to prevent him from moving his king to the right, and was using a knight and (depending on the shot) a pawn to prevent him from just taking the pawn that was threatening him. So.

That's a mistake they do quite often in movies, I noticed. Tipping the king when they go checkmate, although in reality, you don't tip your king when you go checkmate (meaning you lose), you tip it when you want to give up.

If you pay attention the game mirrors both their strategies. Magneto sacrifices his own pawns to expose his enemy by keeping the allies of his enemy disbanded making the guard weak and leaving an advantage to strike while Xavier monitors, adjusts while protecting all his pawns by putting another in the place of the fallen pawn, and puts his enemy into a corner leaving the only option to surrender.

A cool detail about the game: Charles used pawns, seemingly the weakest pieces, to corner his opponent, and at the end of the game is about to promote a pawn into queen (and kill a rook at the same time). That resembles the fact, that he fights the war by teaching a new generation of mutants.

He wouldn't have won like that, the pawn would have to take the king for him to win, otherwise Eric's rook would have taken the pawn, Charles' bishop/queen could have taken the rook. But then the king could just take the bishop/queen as no piece (seen) would prevent that.

Magneto also uses specific Higher Ranked units to capture Pawns in both occasions as his Higher Ranked units are taken. Already signifying a vengeance or retribution on a personal level. The units he's using aren't Pawns. In his case, they're special and unique.

Two things: First, as a kid watching this for the first time I remember being blown away at the plastic prison concept. It made the world feel authentic and immersive like superheroes could exist and had to be dealt with realistically. Second, they did a great job in the subsequent movies with Fassbender and McAvoy because I truly feel the connection between their early relationship dynamics and this weathered one years later.

magneto has the best power of them all. he can literally end all wars by just rendering magnetic metal useless and the only things people could fight with is sticks and plastics. he could advance society by making the best computers, build roads accross the oceans to more easily connect everyone, divert the oceans and rivers to grow crops , prevent forest fires, etc by digging channels and having pools of water on standby. he could be humanities greatest hero but dwells on the what if's instead of being the person charles knows he can be. the master of magnetism is a slave to his anger and fear. it is a huge shame.

I was the chess consultant for this scene. If I recall correctly, filming took place from about 1pm until roughly 2am. They had to reshoot from various angles, check the lighting, etc. Neither of the actors were chess players, but were extremely quick studies of how to move the pieces. I'm happy that people liked the position I created for the scene.

@@4grammaton Yes. I first suggested using an actual game snippet (from Beliavsky v Nunn, Wijk aan Zee 1985), but the director wanted something where pawns overcame pieces and it ended in mate, so I created a position and move sequence on set.

Idk where I heard this before, but I was told that During the filming of X-Men, Patrick Stewart & Ian McKellen actually did not know how to play chess. So they got a chess-master to teach them how to play for their scene.

Correct. Although it's my understanding that neither one actually moved the pieces. If you know about chess, the end is absolutely perfect. Xavier has him in check using (mostly) pawns, while Magneto's queen and rook are powerless to prevent the mate in 2.

Technically, one of the few first anti-villains, since, despite his extremist ways, Magneto still was right about humans being prejudice against others (in that case mutants), where humans can not control or comprehend (yeah, even in real we think ourselves as “chosen ones” or “gods”).

If my observation is correct, I believe Charles legit managed just at the end to checkmate Erik. It's nice then to see that Magneto, with all of his great pride and megalomaniac attributes, still had enough respect for the game to put down his king at the end because of Charles checkmating. It might seem a minor detail, but they could have just have the actors move the pieces randomly and have the short camera movements and distortions make it difficult to actually see if they have actually done anything practical in the game. But they, they actually put effort into creating a proper game between the two old friends. Truly marvelous commitment to their art 🥰

It's kind of interesting, that chess game was already won by the time the clip started, every move that Magneto made was to escape check, and there was no alternative way to do it. I guess they wanted Magneto to lose, but they didn't want to show him making any mistakes or overlooking a way to win. A lot of thought goes into filmmaking... Very cool.

At the end of the film series they never came to the school or passed laws, they just put poison chemicals in all food to prevent new mutants being born. Thus Charles was wrong and Magneto was correct

Though they messed up the shot by excluding one of the pawns (visible earlier in the scene), Xavier won - it was Erik's move and his king was in check by Xavier's pawn, and the pawn was protected by the other pawn that was mistakenly removed. His only move was to move his king over one square, and at that point Xavier can move his knight in front of Erik's pawn, and that's checkmate - the king is in check by the knight, no moves get it out of check by either the pawn or the knight, and none of Erik's other pieces that we can see can save him. That's why he knocks his king over - although the game was not played out to the end, he lost and he knows it.

These plastic/glass prison scenes with Magneto are pretty cool and iconic at this point. But in First Class we saw that Magneto is able to turn a satellite dish that is half a mile away. I just don't see the logistics of a plastic prison being almost a mile wide working that well.

Well it was the first movie so they probably didn't consider establishing that later but at the same time, perhaps this structure is wayyyy large or magneto needs visual line of sight of his target who knows.

The prison was double insulated - designed to both shut off (limit) his connection to Earth's magnetic field, and still keep basic metals out. And an air filteration so he can still breathe

Great insight to Magneto. Just by looking at the board you can see by the pieces Eric has already lost but he keeps on fighting until the very end, refusing to give up, he's determined to see his war through to the very end

Fácilmente una de las mejores escenas no solo del cine superheroico sino del cine en general. Lo que trasmite ese diálogo, las interpretaciones, la música, el ambiente, las tomas. Es simplemente espectacular, cada vez que veo esta escena me emociono y siento cierta nostalgia; nostalgia no solamente a mi infancia cuando vi esta película por primera vez y me voló la cabeza por completo, sino nostalgia a lo que las películas de superhéroes supieron ser en su momento y olvidaron por completo en la actualidad. Ojalá un día lo logren recuperar!

Patrick Stewart plays optimistic characters good. Charles Xavier. Captain Jean Luc Picard. And yes Ian plays a perfect version of Magneto. It’s one thing to act. It’s another to act so well that no one else can fill those shoes.

tha fact is, that Charles Xavier in a chess game, is always attacking, looking for a chessmate as soon is it posible, totally opposite to Magneto's style of playing.
