Friday evening at the 2008 Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival, someone at the Ice Cream Emporium said she would love to hear Tom Brier and Adam Swanson play four-hand piano -- something they had never done before.
So they sat down and gave it a whirl. They decided to play James P. Johnson's famous dance song "Charleston".
Tom is on bass; Adam takes the melody.
You'll please forgive mistakes; this was not planned and they'd never played together on the same piano before. But it sure was fun, wasn't it?

Timeless stuff! It's the bee's knees. In a couple of hundred years it will be the music of this era that will be honored as the 20th Century's finest. Kudos to these two gents, as they truly unwound the spirit of the Charleston. Boop-boop-de-doo!

In fact, if you listen closely, you can hear Adam calling out "verse," "again," and "D-flat" so that Tom knows where he wants to go with the tune.

This is at the Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium, at 51 Main Street, Sutter Creek, California. The piano being played is a player piano, hence the vast collection of rolls nearby.

Watch the Chopsticks video seen in the Related Videos section: Adam gets a lesson in how much Tom will run with things! But Adam does a great job in joining back in and learning parts of the tune he didn't know (especially the Trio section that Tom just makes up on the spot).

It's always nice to out-perform the player piano. Way to go!

@Rmeister007 Yep. That's pianist & composer Kathi Backus. I have a few videos of her playing the piano too.

Dang it, that's one lucky ice cream parlor... For an unrehearsed/unplanned coincidence, that's pretty darn good!

I have no idea. I have not heard that before. It's probably contemporary, composed for some sort of TV show or something, used for comedic effect as they did in that video.

@TheGilbeeno There was more of that. Check out when they did "Chopsticks" together later that weekend. Adam just didn't know what he had started!

Someone posted videos year or two ago of John playing at a gig in the UK. That's the most recent I've heard anything of him.

There's probably a four-hand arrangement to be found somewhere, but this performance was just made up on the spot.

He prepared to be playing at the ragtime festival, thus he's dressed the part. But this is just some after-hours goofing off together.

Moments later, Adam said what he'd like to hear is Frederick Hodges playing four-hand with Tom. They did "Russian Rag". There are some gaffes in it, but it was really fun, and the good parts far outweigh the gaffes. Adam even joined in at the end to make it five-hand piano. Stay tuned...

If someone can fund an Australian tour for some of these guys, I'm sure they'd be happy to make the trip! Perth's John Gill used to come to the States every year back in the early 1990s. He's quite a piano tickler. And I think you know Mike Woolett's videos here on RU-vid. He's a great ear-player. But that's only two people, and Australia's a big place, so yeah, I guess you are ragtime deficient, alas. An injection would do you good!

@skiny145 There is another video, posted by tdub1941 of Tom and Adam doing this again a few months later. I also have a video of them doing the tune on two pianos last year.

I'd like to play this piece with my piano teacher... And i found only the "2 hand" version :( Does a 4-hand score exist, or this is just an improvisation?

Four hand piano. I did that once and only once. It sucked. XD They're really good at 4-hand unrehearsed. [:
