Batch is just one of the best people to ever play in the NFL, very humble, great teammate, amazing in the community, just an amazing person. Lots of respect for him
One of my former colleagues and his son, both of whom were hard core 9ers fans living in the DC metro area went to Latrobe to check out the Steelers in training camp. Batch was the backup then. When he wasn't on the field, he chatted it up for a while with my colleague's son and made a fan out of him. Dude is solid as a rock.
He was very beloved by Steelers fans during his time as a Steelers backup. He was a huge mentor and practically the quarterback coach for Ben Roethlisberger when he first started.

Miss having Charlie as the Steelers backup QB! When he was the backup I knew that if Big Ben went out that the offense was in good hands. On top of that he's one of the classiest guys in the league.
Not sure how or why I ended up watching this..assumed it would be all about Charlie Batch, football etc..but this story hit home as I myself remember my Sister who passed away..and today, 8/17/2020 I don't know why I'm even posting this I feel his hurt and pain Rest In Power Queens😪
I disagree. In sense you’re using it “big break” is a relative term. 2004-2011: Steelers were very close to transcending to “Dynasty” team. Batch wasn’t starting QB but was big contributor when he played & helping younger Ben as veteran mentor who embraced role. He’s remembered for that & city/fans/team all respect. That earned respect opened doors for his current success today, as TV & radio personality-enabling him to have a platform, which like his career, he maximized. I was big fan of Tommy Maddox-I thought he should have been starter in 2001. 2002, he led one of best passing offenses by Steelers-EVER. But when times got tough, Tommy wasn’t up to challenge, a huge reason why Batch overtook him on depth chart in 2005 SB season. Batch was not as talented as Ben or Maddox or Leftwich... but he was integral part of team in his role & example of best you can be
NFL films went hard with this one. One of my best friends growing up was a Steelers fan and their family loved this guy especially, I always wondered why since he was just the backup. Now I get it.
This guy was a big part of the 2005 Super Bowl team. When Ben went down with the leg injury ,Charlie raised his level of play and knocked off some big wins that year. The only backup QB that legitimately earned both SB rings , and not just sitting on the bench . Hands down the greatest backup QB in NFL history .
Growing up here in PGH. I never knew Batch literally contributed this much to Homestead as often as I have drove through it. Mad respect for this gentleman. Speechless
I worked right across the street from those B Ball courts in 96, a few streets down from E Laurel Way. It was very sketchy but a lot of good people, I was so happy to see Charlie come home, great QB, outstanding human
Charlie was an incredible teammate, co-captain and friend while at Easter Michigan University. He had a long professional football career too but it pales in comparison to what he is doing for the young people in Homestead, PA. His impact is legacy-making and will change generations of people in his community. The world needs more people Charlie Batch. 🏈🙌
Glad they did this segment. Stars get all the press and shine, but there are guys like this that have helped so many and have inspiring stories. RIP to his sister...her killer will answer for their actions eventually.
I never knew. Thank you NFL Films. Thank you Charlie Batch. Reaching out and impacting so many lives - those are numbers, statistics that surpass those in the HOF.
He threw a very tight spiral. I always remember seeing him in the Madden games and knowing who he was I’m glad I finally learned a Something about this man. Very cool
Embodies what it is to be a great man and if you ever wonder why we are die hard steelers fans. This is just one example. Thank you Mr. Batch. You are appreciated and loved by us Yinzers!!
I went to steel valley and batch really made a difference in so many ways for the community. He's still doing it today and doing more than ever. Definitely someone to look up to in the community
Who dislikes content like this? Honestly, who are you people? I'd love to know. As a Steeler fan, we were so lucky to have Charlie's leadership in Ben's ear and his heart on the field whenever Ben went down. To win 6 of 9 starts is exactly what you'd hope for in a backup QB. Charlie always shined in Pittsburgh and more importantly, he's a great man and leader of his community.
I have been a Steelers fan since I was 5 years old. The NFL city I have always lived closest to is Detroit. I attended Eastern Michigan University in the late 90s. I met this man on campus when he was a starter for the Eagles. He was a humble and unassuming man then. Clearly, he still is today. I was ALWAYS happy that #16 was ready to step in whenever Roethlisberger couldn't answer the call. And I'm so glad to see that he's made a difference in so many lives. You're a good man, Charlie Batch.
People have No Clue the Paths these guys have walked. Charlie You're a Man that was destine to change the world. Thank You for sharing your Talents with us. Blessings Brother 💪💙
My sister went to steel valley high school with him and also said how good of a person he was, not 1 of the high school football player who looks down on others, he was always a good friend
Damn... Coming from a Colts fan, Charlie Batch was a great guy... Love to see people on the come up make something with their lives even when all is against them
Will honestly never forget that last game against the Ravens. Figured he wouldn't be back, and it was so heartwarming seeing him go out there and win it. Miss him on the field, but love what he does off of it even more. There's good reason Pittsburgh loves him so much!
Steeler fans who grew up during batches era will remember batch as being one of the greatest back ups of all time. Dude was a gangster and won more games then he lost when Ben was injured. That and the fact that he cared so much about the Pittsburgh community went a long way to endearing him in the hearts of every Steelers fan. When Batch was in the question was always “will we go at least .500”. We had confidence in batch and he won over .500 which helped during that time bc Ben was the most sacked QB at the time (or your there with Jay Cutler I believe). Ben took crazy beatings from the divisional rivalry and Batch was there to fill in the gaps when Big Ben truly needed rest
I can't believe the boyfriend used her as a shield. I almost lost my life in the exact situation, random shootout in my old neighborhood and as a wrapped my arms around a mother walking her kid in a stroller i got hit to the right of my heart by half inch and to the left of my spine by about the same amount. Ill never forget the look in that woman's eye as i laid there waiting for there ambulance man its juat a crazy feeling
As a lifelong Steelers fan, since I was 9, now 40. I will always remember those who did what they could for the Steelers Nation. Good times and bad… a true fan never abandons his team or family.
He never got anywhere near the respect he deserves. In my opinion, he is the football equivalent of "sixth man", and for that, I think he should be in the HOF.
A different type of people he helped a whole city some of these players are starters and are awful people it would be in the HOF called the NPA nicest player award
I'll never forget that game in Balitmore. I was so happy for him and had tears in my eyes when he hugged Ben. Was an awesome moment. Knowing all he went through and how hard he battled all of those years.
"Homestead Charlie" is beloved in the 'burgh. He has used his platform as an athlete to make life better for so many people. He's an example and role model of the highest order.
My grandmother was buried in this same cemetery. The day of my grandmother’s funeral, he was at the cemetery and walked over and shook my brother’s, my dad’s, and my hand and gave his condolences to my family. He had no idea who were but still came over provided kindness and reassurance. One of the nicest men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting
You didn’t worry so much about a Big Ben injury when we had Batch. He was always steady and dependable. Glad to have had him on the team for ten years and in the community forever.
I’ve meet this guy at several football camps that he helped out with and he really is an amazing guy, would always point out and try to improve my mechanics and always would answer a question.
I had an opportunity back in 2004 to meet Charlie Batch when I was able to attend training camp as part of the training staff you talk about such an awesome human being. My first day at Camp I was eating lunch by myself away from the players and he saw me and came over and asked if anyone was sitting here and I was shocked and I said No it’s all yours and he sat there and ate lunch with me and talked to me more than anyone on that team. He was an amazing dude who should be in The Hall of Fame not because of his numbers but because of the man he was and still is to this day.
I remember watching Batch when he was a 38 year old backup winning every game he had to play. I was thinking this guy shoulda been starting his entire career
I've been a Steelers fan since I was 8yrs old. I'm 54 now the Rooney's always brought the best people to that organization, and Charlie batch is the proof! Charlie thank you for your time with our team. But more importantly thank for what you mean to humanity it's self. Your a good man ❤️🌎
God bless you Charlie, we are all very proud of you. You have a heart my brother and my condolences, prayers for comfort from the Lord and we all love you to this day and beyond. Never lose your heart or the faith. God bless you ❤
Charlie was important to the Steelers during his stay . You would always see him helping Ben make the correct adjustments . And if Big Ben went down Charlie could get the job done so Big Ben could take the time to heal . And playing in AFC North in the 2000's , it was TOUGH . You saw the best defense 2 to 3 times a year (Ravens) . And the weather in this region in early Jan is brutal .
