Had an absolutely awful awful *awful* day at work, and Brooker made my day so much better. Thank you, Charlie. Almost brought a tear to my eye how much less terrible I feel.
There was a time, quite long ago even though it doesn't feel like it, when Charlie Brooker was the sole voice of reason and sanity in a world going down the crapper. Screenwipe was the most on the pulse television of the decade, even though it was only meant to be just a cheap arse TV review show shunted out into the vast wilderness of BBC Four. But it broke beyond those confines and became so much more. I don't want to knock the other "Wipe" variations which followed, but Screenwipe was Brooker's finest hour. There was a genuine air of depression about him, which you don't get in a TV presenter very often. A normal guy as helplessly smegged off about every little irritating thing as we are.
Funny you mentioned that. I can't stand Charlie Brooker nowadays with his Black Mirror and yearly wipes, but every now and then I'd think about Screenwipe, remember the episodes and the old Charlie Brooker when he was reasonable and made more sense back then, he genuinely taught me a lot about how television and the industry works before I did Media Studies, he was both funny and informative about it which really made me appreciate him, I still wish he'd go back to those good old days.
@@juniorjr. I found Screenwipe to be one of those rare instances of a show running its natural course then bowing out right before it would have begun to run out of steam. However, not as much so with the spinoffs which followed. I liked Newswipe very much, but there was just a slight sense of fatigue. By Weekly Wipe, I felt it had hit that zombie state which all shows will inevitably hit after a while. Some good stuff still in there, but the gaps between the golden material was widening. I've never really followed Charlie Brooker's other work. I'm vaguely aware of it, but I sensed that it wouldn't appeal to me so I never gave it a try in the first place.
Fuck me, I haven't even thought about Justin Lee Collins in years, the thought that these people can and will just away into nothingness at some point is very reassuring :)/
I'm Mexican, and I gotta say that you haven't seen bad acting until you witness 472 episodes of a latinamerican "telenovela"... That guy nailed it perfectly...
If you like Charlie Brooker you should watch Adam Curtis' stuff. It's very, very good. He makes documentaries of the highest quality and he does segments for Charlie Brooker. The Power of Nightmares is the best documentary I have ever seen. Bitterlake and HyperNormalisation are his most recent work and they are very good too. I'd watch Bitterlake before HyperNormalisation. You can find most of his stuff here on RU-vid but if you can't find all his stuff you may find it on archive org - Adam Curtis (search Adam Curtis archive). I love Charlie Brooker and I love that he likes Adam Curtis' stuff.
you probably dont give a shit but does someone know a method to log back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot my password. I would love any tricks you can offer me.
@Jesse Jude thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
The Wire is a whole other level though it's almost unfair to compare other shows to it. But yeah I absolutely love The Shield...it's so good...the characters get you from the beginning and everything going on around them is so realistic..another great show. I'd watched The Wire but then started watching Deadwood and The Shield after Brooker recommended them and both are excellent shows.
08:17 Oh god, I went to school with her. She worked as a model for a local hairdressers, and always had really cool styles. Holy crap, I hope she's okay to end up on Jeremy Kyle.
Expected today's Charlie Brooker...instead its his boyish younger self....this must have been a much longer ago than I realized he's such teenage boy here lol
It's fucking awesome. Really, it's best to compare it not to other TV shows, rather it's a 21st Century version of Charles Dickens depictions of his time and place. But with plenty of humour too.
The difference between Jeremy Kyle and, say, Jerry Springer or Maury Povich, is that Kyle presents himself as some sort of problem solver or guru. Which is worse, because it furthers the false notion that you can use simple solutions to fix complicated problems.
I miss these , he's the greatest black mirror was good until bandersnatch then dropped off abit hopefully we get some new stuff after the 2020 antiviral wipe
The cover of the album has nothing to do with censorship, its a licencing issue. Also he is showing different clips of shows aired at different times, Some swear words will be beeped while others aren't.
Nowadays, TV has gone downhill a lot as all they care about are Strictly & Love Island 24/7, 365 days a year; it seemed like (I am doing this in Brooker words) 2006 was the year TV's golden age well & truly died and 2007 was the year that the modern world as we know it began. Agree?
Thank you I shall check some of them out, my favorite 'personal view' 70s/80s documentary series (when a lot of these were made it seems) is Carl Sagan's Cosmos. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. I've also been been meaning to watch the Civilization series as well. Theres a good interview with Attenborough here about the making of AoM: /watch?v=kCG6mN1GX3A&list=PL9C1F900966EBA342&index=14
If you enjoyed The Ascent Of Man, then I would also suggest a number of documentary series made by James Burke, such as The Day The Universe Changed and the 3 series of Connections. They are a bit dated but otherwise educated, interesting and informative. I grew up watching them when they were first shown on UK TV. ru-vid.com
Oh, Bollocksm I knew I have should have taken everyone advice about the wire. Everyone said that it's a great programme but it does take a couple of episodes to get into. SHIT.
I can't see the cover for the Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, they bleeped out a few words, but it's a-ok to see a woman playing with her bare breasts? Oh England.
