@@brendaowens2466 they used to be on tv decades ago, i watched with mt mom in the 60's and early 70's. its wonderful that we can enjoy them again this way, as tv has long forgotten these films. 🥂 enjoy.
No one could have imagined that almost one hundred years later, the audience for the Charlie Chan franchise would be as strong as it is today. Unless films were Academy Award winners, no great effort was made to do any extra preservation of old films. Maybe modern technology can retrieve old films from many countries. The trash being filmed in today's entertainment industries is seldom watchable or will be missed!
Every generation moans how the grass was greener back in the day. (Actually, glorifying grandparents' generation, but degrading parents' gen) This movie belongs to an entertaining detective genre, not much different from gazillion of superhero movies made today, or dumb cookie cutter musicals of so-called "Golden era of Hollywood". Just saying, plot line of this movie is not necessarily "Crime and punishment" either.
"Lt. Mike" was Tim Ryan, who became a regular player in the last Chan movies. When he wasn't helping Charlie, Tim Ryan did comedy movies with his then-wife, Irene Ryan ... but that's another story ...
Whether portrayed by Toler, Oland, or Winters....Chan is brilliant! 2020 All the nuns in the Catholic schools, I attended from elementary to high school, NEVER wore heels lol
The Golden Eye is a 1948 American film directed by William Beaudine and starring Roland Winters in his fourth appearance as Charlie Chan. The film is also known as Charlie Chan in Texas (Belgian English title) and Charlie Chan in the Golden Eye (American poster title).
Have watched all Charlie Chan movies over and over, never tire of them, especially if Warner Oland or Sydney Toler play the part and Mantan Moreland and No.#1 son are in them.
I suspected Bartlett all along, but thought I must be wrong until the very end. I prefer earlier Charlie Chan movies without Birmingham and the slapstick comedy. Still enjoy these last ones, though. Am happy to find so many Chan films on RU-vid.
I agree about preferring movies without slapstick comedy of Birmingham. I like number 1 and 2 sons, but not Birmingham. For me, he detracts from Charlie Chan films.
"If you don't see me when yu come out, that's ok, I'll be way ahead of you " Ha. Birmingham is so funny. Covid introduced me to all Charlie Chans. Love 'em.
I have enjoyed Charlie Chan films since childhood. Sidney Toler was my favorite actor to portray him. Mantan Moreland was always a delight. But Tommy instead of Jimmy?
I've seen most of the Charlie Chan movies from the early 1930s into the late 1940s, and most are of either excellent viewing quality or have somehow been restored to almost original quality. I like this one also, but it sure could use some restoration.
I been waiting to see some charlie chan movies for a long time all the good movies don't come on no more Charlie Chan, topper, Sherlock Holmes and a lot more I prefer these movies over some of the ones that's comes on
To be fair, he _did_ show up at the very end of the Charlie Chan era, and Charlie Chan movies were being made by a cheap company from 1944 - 1949: Monogram Pictures. It's not all his fault, I can't blame him for the whole lot of it. His performance is a bit disappointing, but it might also be a lack of budget on part of the studio. That little detail where he didn't say _"Excuse, please"_ when going to the cottage door is just... Disappointing, though. But he did say "Thank you so much" when entering the house to "deliver Jade."
@@geraldhard1562 ~ I thought this actor did a decent portrayal of Mr Chan. Not quite as good as Sidney and Warner, but it was a fairly good story. By the way, it's Toler and Oland, not Toyler and Orland. Those two were the best.
@@MrMaxismybaby ~ No. The actor's name is Roland Winters, which appears in large letters at the start of the film. Boris Karloff did however portray the Chinese detective Mr Wong, for a series of films in the late 1930s and early 40s.
I don't think there is abad charlie chan movie and character Birmingham really adds to the movies He should of been in all of the charlie chan movies but never the less they are all great
Yes, but this was made about -twenty- years earlier. EDIT: Wow, where was my mind? I meant to type fifty. EDIT 2: I guess I was thinking of the year "Goldfinger" was released, by mistake.
Love Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan & Mantan Moreland they were such delightful actors to watch !!!! However that pesky son #2 of Charlie Chan just drives me crazy !!!!
I tried to watch this movie, but 12 minutes into it was interrupted 6 times by commercials. Impossible to focus on movie. I give up on you tube. Nothing like it used to be. It’s now intolerable.
