Exactly. I feel people have no idea how much we work to partner with our horses to work together. We use every muscle in our body as do our horses. These aren't push button ponies. Riding is a very difficult sport and it takes decades to get to this level. Most people never do.

Charlotte did an awesome job demonstrating the difference between being collected in the trot and not being collected. Collection is what dressage seems to be all about especially at the top levels. Wish I had seen this a year ago when you actually did this Charlotte. Thank you. I learned a lot from this video. The placement of your hands seems to really made a difference in how a horse collects too.

I wish I had the video handy but I saw a clinic with a quarter horse being ridden. Nothing crazy special, but he really looked nice and round when picked up properly and slowly throughout the ride his trot got slightly more springy. Not all the way to passage cause they weren't at that level but still built a nice trot through collection

Alot of times they have 2 horses. One that is a beginner and then later, they bring in a horse like this. It gives the illusion of transformation ;) Not saying charolette did that here, but lots of trainers do it

sarina Stokes No one is criticizing Miss Dujardin as a rider, she is a beautiful rider. If She couldn’t take criticism she never would have become the rider she is, lol I assure you she still takes criticism well, no one stays on top without continuing to get instruction which is criticism. Eyes on the ground allow us to see what we cannot and keep one on track. However what many are pointing out is simply fact. This horse does not track up, there is no impulsion from behind, all it does is throw its feet forward, which my look wow to the uneducated eye but to the educated eye it is simply false and an incorrect way of going. The horse is not using its self well, there are other faults but that was the most obvious and glaring, this doesn’t make her a bad rider and it’s not her horse so it doesn’t make her a bad trainer ether lol. My understanding is she remarked on this horses lack of tracking up if one watches the whole video of the demo, pointing out fact does not make a person petty and educating ones eye should be part of every horse persons goals.

Casperina I never said Miss Dujardin looked to RU-vid commenters for feed back on her riding 🤦‍♀️. What I did saw way that she wouldn’t be where she is today without being able to take criticism and that it’s hardly criticism of her when people are pointing out the very same thing she said herself . The world is a cruel place and the truth is usually the harshest words one will ever hear, but to be successful as she is you must be able to handle it all.

Lol.. It's always been like that. Good ol' haters, what would we do without them? Everything is about tearing others down. In Denmark we have something we call janteloven, and that's basically about tearing others down; "because they shall not think they are better than me". This is excactly whats always been going on in the equestrian world, and it's fucking disgusting!!!

I said one of the best. I have trained 2 horses through PSG. And have a schoolmaster from Germany to learn to learn to ride the GP movements. That is part of who I am. I train with Germans who are schooled through their system, one with a masters in teaching. I choose to build up people in the dressage world not tear them down but I am not by any means perfect.

I hadn't thought about it before, but I think I agree that the trot is the easiest gait to improve. If the walk is lackluster, you can only push it so much before the horse develops a tendency to pace or jig. I knew a retired saint of an upper level horse who had an unfortunate tendency to pace when asked to walk forward. Pretty sure someone was trying to improve his walk and pushed for more than he had to give. Not to mention, the inherent quality of the horse's walk will be screamingly obvious in the free walk. If the horse is naturally heavy on the forehand in the canter, flying changes are not going to come easily, let alone pirouettes. There are also the horses where they struggle with one lead and no amount of correct work, chiro, massage, etc. makes much difference. My background is almost exclusively hunter/jumper, but I have a passion for flatwork and have thrown my leg across many an "ugly" horse. I have found that when I work with these horses, the gait that I can best improve is the trot. I have found that every horse I have worked with can at minimum be trained to lengthen, shorten, bend properly through turns, and leg yield in the trot. Three of these "ugly" horses were former working cattle ranch horses who weren't even started under English tack yet. I worked with them to improve all three gaits, and the trot was the first gait where I noticed a big difference.

Why are people so quick to attack?! This is about improvement: to say there wasn’t anything wrong and ‘she just added piaffé’ is sad:( and like the other haters just don’t see the difference. Sure the horse is extremely athletic but definitely started more on the forehand than after corrections. You can literally see the hind increasingly engage. Why not just observe?

Lacy Jinks yes, it's a problem. Totillas and his successors of extreme movement have made many blind to this reality. No hock movement, not really engaged, beautiful yes, but not as connected as he should be.

It is important to train one's eye to discern what is correct- in the first trot the horse is not tracking up. In the "improved" trot the horse's hind legs are trailing behind, rather than stepping up underneath the body with the ability to thrust and carry: i. e. engaged power. Toward the end of the video with the horse back in regular trot, he is still not tracking up.

Kind of. While there is a correlation for improvement, there is a stronger correlation btwn inrpoving the walk and canter.

All the canter needs to be better is the right muscles built up, which you can do by doing more canter. Eventually when the muscles are there the horse can carry itself correctly in the canter.. that's why so many just starting to canter buck going into it because they haven't the muscles there to carry themselves.

Exactly, it was never an ugly trot. All Charlotte did was combine Passage into the trot. Then it wasn't really a better trot, it was simply adding Passage into the trot turning in into passage. Or am I blind in what I'm seeing here.

Ariana G In western natural horsemanship, I am taught that release on the rein, legs, or crop, that is a reward to these horses.

It’s subtle reward. It’s a release like someone else said, that can even be as slight as releasing your fingers a bit or like she did and let him go forward more. When he got a little sloppy he was reminded and then I bet she released her fingers as the reward. You can release them but, they can’t take advantage of it. When she was all finished I’m sure she patted him.

Love Charlotte, so no criticism in the riding, but wondering why she throws her hands upward every once in a while. Is that to bring his head more up? I don't love it, as it's a bit too obvious a movement for me - thoughts??

She could be half halting and then giving the rein. This guy has a shortish neck and might be prone to grabbing onto the bit and curling. By half halting and giving (even exaggerating the give) she could be going after more than one thing: he is not given the opportunity to latch on again, he is encouraged to stretch into the bridle and keep the throat latch area open so as not to curl.

Thoroughbred maybe? Could be Andalusian. Percherons are a lot heavier built than this horse is.

A million dollar says it’s some variety of Warmblood (type, not a breed). Not nearly fine of bone enough to be a performance bred Thoroughbred, and they’re not the “it” kids for dressage right now. Most probably not an Andalusian or PRE horse either, they have a very distinctive neck set and heaviness on the front caused by conformation.

I trained in Germany for 3 yrs and have my Bereiter. The horse does not over track in the extension. There is no push power just front leg action and THAT is false. The hind foot/feet/legs must propel the horse forward so that the feet show an overtrack. Lifting the neck should be done by squeezing the legs and encouraging the horse forward INTO the bridle, not by fiddling with the hands. This lifting the neck is espoused by many riders of the day. Fortunately for me I was able to witness true horsemanship when Klimke came to my stable in Niederndorf in 1993 and I was able to see him and his daughter train in our riding rings.

Abigail Autumngate yup, self carriage doesn't come from the head or neck of the horse, but from the hind legs stepping under the horse properly. There is a muscle all along the horses top line, which means the poll, back and hind end all work together. The head (which everyone obsesses over) does not determine self carriage. Engagement of that muscle along the top line and a horses core does and this results in the back lifting.

The trot wasn't ugly but it didn't track up. Also Charlotte is saying very well what the goals are but she doesn't simply pick up the reins and gets the horse's suspension to improve. She fails to tell the audience what she actually really has to do with her body to get the horse to do that. This is why she wouldn't be able to teach a novice to simply do what she is doing.

Telling someone exactly what you're doing when you have a system that you're so used to that you do it automatically. I don't think this show is to teach a novice HOW to achieve that, just to show, that any trot can be perfected, and what really matters when buying a horse is the walk and the canter.

@@lucybeswick7219 that in itself is already an oxymoron as most equestrians that I have met don't have enough patience and therefore the ease will forever elude them. And therefore so will the suspended trot. The other thing is that you need a relatively sound horse and many horses are not that sound.

The horse is not showing off as she says, Horses don't have ego's like humans. No pride in their bones just pure will and desire to please their mounts. Period.

Horses do show off, but not out of pride or arrogance. It's body language. Watch two rival stallions in the wild, they prance, paw & rear. Not for humans' benefit, but it is inspiring to see. Or watch a horse- or any prey animal, for that matter - when they sense danger, they kick up their heels to show how healthy they are. Dressage is trying to encourage that confidence & strength at best, but at worst is cruel exercise in puppetry. Like a puppet though, when driven by fear or pain the movement of the horse becomes ugly & ridged instead. That's the difference between a good horseman and a bad one- maybe too subtle for competitive sport.

Horses who race, barrel race, jump, etc, they all have some thrill to do it because if they didn’t we wouldn’t push for it and they wouldn’t let us on their backs. And if you’ve ever seen a stallion with a mare they do have a little dance routine like this. But that’s just my opinion.

also..some horses believe it or not..when you pull out the camera..some will instantly "show off" and make themselves look proud :D it's kind of funny to watch..ex. in price giving after a show the horse is standing sloutching and looking bored and next second someone points a camera at the same horse it will totally change his posture and ears forward :D while some don't care at all, like my own horse now..he looks like a donkey no matter camera or not xD bring out the candy tho and hes a totally different looking horse hahah!

Horses do have peronalities and ego for that matter, they have a mind of their own, they can even have temper tantrums.even out playing in the field the strut their stuff and perform. I know a mare that gets miserable when she knocked a jump...she just isnt happy at all yet when she wins her classes she is cheerful and loves her round of honour.My gelding and i have recieved plenty of penelties in our XC because his speed was deemed reckless but from the moment he hears that bell he takes over he loves to gallop and is very brave into jumps ...I dare not even try hold him back because he will tense up and be sour. Animals can choose what they like and dislike.They really arent as simply programed as just to please their riders. Horses can have a great fun when learning new things and they are really happy. Its proven that they secrete endorphins when trained with possitive reinforcement..so they can truely enjoy what they do

Besides what people actually think and have told you, foaming is from too much pressure and not being able to swallow. On top of that, most dressage horse "chomp" not chew at the bit. This doesn't help with salivating.

It's not her horse, she doesn't ride it in training, she was just sat on it for a demo. I would guess from the flag on the saddle pad that it's Canadian.

Katie Yahanda it is much better than letting your horse bob around without any sort of roundness or collection. This horse probably can outlive most school horses or jumpers due to always being in proper form

Some of the methods used are indeed despicable, but that's not about dressage, that's about humans, and humans in the equestrian world. Dressage is a much more ethical sport than show jumping or racing. Dressage emphasises natural movement and demonstrates a connection between horse and rider.

The actual movements can be trained just as well with no bits, Spurs, whips or shoes- even without a rider. It’s not the dressage it’s the methods of training

But dressage done in the right way offers a great base. Teaching a horse to carry himself, which is done in Western as well, as far as I know, is quite benefitial.

It’s not about being a lazy rider, nor kicking (yes I understand her term isn’t flagrant kicking) Dressage is about the fine subtle details involved to move the horse in such a way that it looks like a beautiful effortless dance. “I’m a lazy rider?” Haha, 😂 I seriously cannot listen to this. Actually I was at this symposium and this was just a small clip of her session with this horse. She started out talking about the issues with this horse (not her horse or her training) including his tendency to shorten his neck and fake collection by taking "bouncier steps" instead of more powerfully using his hind end underneath himself, being lazy. Its been making me chuckle seeing people criticize without seeing the whole picture.

Yeah the squeezing of the leg means to go forward/move laterally. Spurs are for more finer aids used in higher dressage movements.
