Charlotte of Nassau-Weilburg (23.01.1896 - 9.07.1985) was Grand Duchess of Luxembourg from 1919 to 1964 and Duchess of Nassau. After the occupation of Luxembourg on 10 May 1940 by German troops the Grand Duchess and her family and the government fled to exile in Canada and London via France, Portugal and the United States. From 1940 to 1944, the Grand Duchess became a symbol of freedom and independence of her country through her radio talks on the BBC. During this time she visited in 1941 Luxembourg emigrant groups and clubs in the United States. Then she traveled in 1942 and 1943 on the so-called "goodwill tours" through the United States. On 25 August 1942 the Grand Ducal family was received by U.S. President Roosevelt. Finally, on 10 September 1944 the city of Luxembourg had been liberated by American troops. Prince Felix and hereditary Grand Duke Jean returned the same day and were enthusiastically acclaimed by the population. On 14 April 1945 also the Grand Duchess returned from exile. After having returned, she visited the villages and towns of the country that had been destroyed during the Battle of the Bulge.

Back on that day, my mother stood in front of the palace with her sister and her brother cheering . For her to see the Grand-Duchess on the balcony of palace (desecratedby the nazi invaders) was one of the most moving moments of her life. To me , imagining her alive inmidst of that crowd is very moving. That very same day her mother and other sisters came back from deportation. ....They are all gone now....

Grand Duchess Charlotte and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, among other deposed monarchs or heads of State sharing their exile with their respective governments in London, were the only two women among an ocean of statesmen (as far as I know) and, despite the standing of men towards women in those times, both of them were highly regarded among all the governments in exile. Churchill even went as far as claiming that Her Majesty the Queen was "the only man" in regards to her own ministers and foreign too. Her Royal Highness had managed to not only establish diplomatic correspondence with President Roosevelt (a key ally in times of war), but had also managed to forge a FRIENDSHIP in which he addressed Madame with the most affectionate "Dear Lottie" or something along those lines, as far as I recall. She could not have remained as much, as she would have wanted to, but Madame was a symbol of Luxembourg and what better way for the Nazi invaders to have her, of all people, prostrated at their feet? It was something that no one would wish to do, more so, with the lingering memory of her late sister, whose alleged "cooperation" with the German invaders during the Great War led quaint little Luxembourg to the brink of revolution. Perhaps she left because she was a patriot who wished no further humiliation of her people, perhaps she fled because she was a mother who wished no harm to come to her children (despite Prince Jean enlisting against the Nazis), or perhaps she fled because she was a monarch who wished not to lose her people's support and her throne as her sister had. One might never know for sure, but MY GUESS as a foreigner whose admiration for Her Highness is great (though, perhaps, not accurate?), is that she was forced to leave her homeland for fear of becoming rather than a symbol to her subjects, a symbol to the occupying powers, thus prompting the loss of her people's morale. Her broadcasts through the BBC, "Leif Lezteburger" (the spelling is most probably wrong, I apologise) were a light of hope for her people in chains, as were those of Queen Wilhelmina -- for, even though nowadays one might not consider it so, Luxembourg would still survive for as long as their grand duchess was safe, even if it was elsewhere, and providing them with radio broadcasts to raise their morale. Some of you might disagree with me, but I have two things to say: GOD SAVE LUXEMBOURG AND ITS PEOPLE!! AND MAY THE SOUL OF MADAME LA GRANDE DUCHESSE REST IN PEACE!!

Thank you for sharing this. My parents still live in Luxembourg (born in 1926 and 1933) and I live in the US. This is a wonderful memory for me to see what life was like for them when the war was finally over. Again thank you so very much.

It is funny to see how Felix, her husband, always had to walk 2-3 meters behind her.

Luxembourg would be neutral until 1949. So sad her cherished neutrality was not respected by the Big Powers of France and Germany. H.R.H.G.D. Charlotte was truly lovely.
