I loved Susan Hayward. I wish that more people appreciated her. Charlton Heston was always underrated. He radiated strength and integrity like few other actors.
Shame it was his only nomination because he deserved a LOT more recognition. As usual Hollywood tends to overlook the artists who don't share their politics. He should've won also for Planet of the Apes and other magnificent roles he played over the years.

I truly think that Charlton Heston was a good actor, and he certainly gave one of his best performances in Ben Hur. He also acted very well in El Cid, Khartoum, Planet of the Apes and The Agony and the Ecstasy. He always played well those characters who were larger than life.

The thing I like most about past Academy Awards programs is that ALL the films were excellent and you knew it was very, very difficult to chose a winner because the competition was really fierce. Amazing that so many excellent films were launched each year.
The man he referred to as "giving more than any of us" was Sam Zimbalist who worked so hard on Ben Hur that he had a heart attack and died. I applaud Heston for mentioning that, as most people would not: A) want to be a downer B) take attention away from themselves He was a class act.
The president's lady was so good,and he did a good job of playing Andrew Jackson,he also played the roll two times he was A.J in the bucaneer,opposite Yul Brenner his co star in 10 commandments.
I think I prefer that over Ben-Hur too. But Ben-Hur is amazing! Love both movies. Heston is very charismatic, his voice is also captivating, sort of tough but also wise.

The Gentleman Charlton Heston he told Hayward... "Easy girl" as she was hardly trying to get to the podium they Admired & respected each other always then Hayward told the audience as every one rose to their feet giving Susan a standing ovation then Susan said ; "well this is the last time i pull this up" & she was as good as her word a little bit within a year the gorgeous red headed Angel died in Carrollton Georgia in april 1975...

I think Heston's performance works because of his sincerity. You believe that he is a character in that time period, even though, of course, he's a modern American. After a few scenes, you almost forget it's Heston and you just think of him as Ben Hur. The film (as great as it is and as terrific all the supporting cast are) still relies on the audience engaging with Heston/Hur and he did deserve the Oscar for pulling that off.
I think Heston gave a marvelous performance in this epic film. There are always those who will disagree, but taken all in all, the longevity of this film proves the lasting impact of this movie. Certainly, no Hollywood actor could have done the seminal role more justice.
Jerseybytes2 Yup. Steven Boyd was stunning. Even the smaller character roles like the guy who played Pilate, or a remarkable Sam Jaffe who played the old man, or the Arab chariot owner, played by Hugh Griffith, who I believe won the Oscar... he stole the show! A perfect film requires a perfect cast, and as you said, this one had it. Many people tend to forget that for every great performance, there were a lot of people who helped them. Show less
I hated Steven Boyd so much when I first saw this movie (which is course is the sign of an amazing performance by an actor. I mean how could he be so mean to Ben-hur), and Charlon Heston was what ,, if I had an older brother he'd have been Ben-Hur. As I grew up I began feeling sad for Messala and kept wishing both him and Ben-hur could have lived in a different time where they were both able to remain friends for ever. To this day I still wish Ben-Hur was my older brother lol.

Yes; a far cry from the freak show we have today. Heston is truly an American icon. "Ben Hur"; at the very least, one of the top ten films of all-time. I was born way too late..😕
his countenance and expressions of gratitude resemble the same as when his surrogate father in Ben -Hur announced he had been adopted by him ..very touching..
