Charlton Heston walked into a scene and - merely by his presence...stole the attention from every actor in the scene. He was an amazing role model...a family man, married to the same woman for 50 + years and a truly gifted actor.
I watched this about 5 years ago....I remember being very impressed by the way he dealt with his illness...now I am ill myself, not with dementia but what I have is incurable and I am very tired...I try to deal with this the way he did and hope to remain dignified to the end...rest in perfect peace Charlton, you were truly amazing and thank you for showing me the way....
Hold fast midnightblue,3226, your comment was stoically perfect and Mr. Heston would surely have thanked you, and certainly wished much dignity as you face twilight's coming days. My very best to you, from Australia
I met him in 1965 when he came to Detroit for the world premiere of “The War Lord” . He was everything I expected. Lager than life, gracious and charismatic.
No such thing as luck-has this life not taught U anything?! It takes the 2 individuals working & loving & loving & working together daily-to have a successful marriage-otherwise, all ya got is 1 side and well, we all know how that works out -IT DOESN’T!!!
To see someone like Charlton Heston say "I couldn't be me without her...you were the centre of my life"....I should no longer feel guilty or inferior about having similar feelings previously for someone that was once in my life
@@eddriver7815 Thank goodness. Sure beat being a giant in Planned Parenthood (the black-hating racist Maragaret Sanger already took that role), or antifa.
As tough as it was to watch this interview with one of my movie heroes, He showed so much dignity and a deep love and appreciation for his wife through all their years together. Gone but never forgotten 🙏
I grew up with this man’s great talent, notably every year as child watching the 10 Commandments, and still to this day in 2024. These were the real stars that are all but gone, but their work will always be with us.
Heston lived and died a Man. No matter his politics or what some might think about him because of their biases; Ben-Hur. The Ten Commandants, The Greatest Show On Earth, The Naked Jungle, Touch of Evil, 55 Days in Peking, The Greatest Story Ever Told, El Cid, Khartoum, Planet Of The Apes, Will Penny and dozens more make him one of the best Actors of Film.
Forget his films. Those are two human beings facing decay and death with real courage and grace. My political views are very different than Mr. Hestons but dammit I respect the man. I hope I can face the end with half as much bravery as he and his wife did.
@@brandywineblue So very true. I recall he was large in stature with a prescence and charisma to match. He was also very approachable. A very nice man indeed! There are so very few of his kind left.
Many people later hated him because of the NRA thing, but they forget he was one of the first Hollywood people to march with the Civil Rights people in the early 60s.
joekidd1992 Exactly! .. Heston was a strong advocate for civil right many years before it became fashionable, and was a recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, plus the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award.
I never could understand how he could be for Civil Rights but at the same time, support Barry Goldwater who opposed it. Heston was obviously a very conflicted man and changed his political positions many times during his life.
@@abdiver12, well, you're obviously young and don't know Goldwater like you think you do. In fact, Goldwater voted for civil rights in 1957 and 1960, but is only remembered for opposing civil rights in 1964, largely because he rightly believed (and was later proven to be right), that the Civil Rights Act would not create equal rights for all men, but Title VI would be used to grant preferential treatment. Look into Goldwater (who was half Jewish, so knew about discrimination), and I think you'll learn more about what he really stood for, rather than relying on myths, and talking points from people too busy to read, do their homework and think independently.
"I can part the Red Sea, but i cannot part with you" Yes!!! That's my idol! One of the greatest film actors of all time! You"re the man Sir Charlton Heston!
@@michaelhungate7506 Yes, he started smoking again while embedded in Iraq desert storm. More people die of lung cancer that never smoked then do the smokers. Very little is taught about radon gas, the main cause of lung cancer that seeps out of the ground. RIP to both of them, both top in their field and will be missed. I can remember Peter from Viet Nam as a child, and Chuck in Moses.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Heston and received an autographed copy of Ben Hur a year or two before his Alzheimer's diagnosis. He recited a long passage from one of his stage parts and those of us in the room sat in awe. listening. He was a true gentleman, and I recall being shocked to see this larger than life figure stooped over a cane from arthritis as he shuffled out of the room after the interview. I stopped watching the Oscar telecast the year after he passed. I was watching the "In Memorium" portion and was disgusted that most of the audience sat on their hands, rather than applaud him when Mr. Heston's photo was displayed. Before joining the NRA, Heston was a fearless champion for equality in the early 60's and fought for civil rights. He was a good and decent man.
@@gulmerton2758 half century, but I agree with the sentiment. Marriages like theirs are what makes a nation and a society great. Children need BOTH their parents
+Brittany Davis I'm with you. In all the movies I've watched, there is no portrayal of anyone that resonates with me as much as Chuck's portrayal of Moses. Maybe the finest performance I've ever seen.

+KtK - I guess since the jury is out on whether Moses existed at all... it's fine by me, even if it's not technically accurate for a person born in that geographical location.
He was a big part of my youth. Some of us don't even get to say goodbye, we die from heart attacks, or some other sudden catastrophe , he got to put a period at the end of a sentence...
@Tiger lily55 Ocean waves "He was an obnoxious POS"... Why? Because he believed in God and country above all else? And standing up for your rights and mine as an American? If that makes you an "obnoxious POS", then put me down as one. Even though you couldn't be more wrong, which doesn't surprise me. Sorry.
@@davidnmorrismorrisactor7117 We need LOTS more people who support the NRA. There's nothing wrong with that -- unlike, say, the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Message from Scotland-Charlton Heston will forever be an American Icon. Major loss to cinema. Gone but not forgotten. His Goodbye speech was wonderfully eloquent, courageous and moving.
Old, tired...worn out. Saw Charlton in ‘68 for first time in Planet of the Apes movie. I was 10. He was Hollywood. Time can be so unforgiving and in my mind, even cruel. Now I’m the one whose tired and worn out. Much respect for he and his wife of so many years.
"Saw Heston in '68 for the first time in Planet of the Apes." You were born too late to see him in his two unforgettable epics "The Ten Commandments and "Ben Hur". People flocked to see these 2 movies when they came out in the 1950s and early '60s. They weren't just movies. They were memorable occasions!
@Sam Cash - Like WHICH modern actors were you referring to anyway? After all, Charlton Heston was not the only one that had such a description you made him out to be.
I had the pleasure some years ago of meeting this Hollywood icon. I can honestly say he made me feel like as if he was my fan and that he was honored to meet me. I found his kindness and humility amazing. I'll never forget that. I became a fan when I was 10 years old 50 years later I still am and always will be. "Farewell young Arias."
We (my daughter & I) met him at a book signing in about 1997 or 1998. My daughter was about 9 or 10. He was such a kind man, and obviously wanted to chat with her more than with me. She has never forgotten, and, of course, neither have I. ❤️
That's why I dont watch any crap that comes out of hollywierd..I watch the older movies that taught me alot and educated me on historical figures and events..
@@tulllguy Your're either a man or your're not there is no suck thing as fake or real men , puberty makes one a man no matter how people see it, but I get what you mean.
Because of the general decline of moral values in our society, there are not a lot of manly man walking around. Hollywood has to import these manly types from Australia, lol
@James Henderson The far right? Go back ti school dear. It is not the far right that supports the right to bear arms. The right and the rational left support the right. There's a reason for it. They, unlike you know history and prefer not to repeat the horror.
He stood for what he believed which is a rare quality in an actor. I am sure we will watch him parting the Red Sea many times more. God bless your soul.
I think this is a valuable, respectful documentary. With questions that matter. It's nice to see how important a marriage can be. Charles Heston speaks very fondly of his wife, my respect. 'What can be cured, must be endured' says Heston at the end of this documentary.
Extraordinary Actor .... timeless ability and Roles. We all got to go sometime .... but he was definitely one to mourn on passing away. A Real Nice Guy, and incredible acting ability, a mix that doesn't appear in real life that often .......
For me Ben Hur was Charlton Hestons finest hour--and when he gave jesus that drink of water!! not a easy scene to do, resulted in a real magic moment! god must have been well pleased----I guess his with the original now, well deserved, have fun sir x
Watching The Ten Commandments movie was a regular event every Christmas or Easter for about four Decades!! Now I dont watch EVERY single year, BUT I know it by heart now!
All I want to say is, Mrs. Heston, we sorely miss your wonderful husband. There are no others who can even come close to tying his shoes. We miss him deeply. God bless you and the family, and thank you for sharing him with all of us. -- a devoted fan, a Christian, a Patriot, a Conservative and a United States Coast Guard Mother
It's always said that alzheimer's is where the afflicted doesn't know that they die first... then the family has to live with a stranger until the body dies. It's a cruel disease. The love from his wife, so evident in her eyes, did , I hope, temper that pain.
@Nance S. and @Timothy B. 1st, thank you for your service & sacrifices 2nd, you both spoke so well & with such insight, as insight that is born out of experience! You also spoke authoritivly, without apology, nor should you! Thank you. I just want to thank you.
Charlton is completely unique, one of a kind. Great actor in his own right. A lovely testament to their marriage. Glad they had the courage to go public with this diagnosis. It is reality for so many others.
Blake & paul w: show me a man unprepared and unwilling to fight for what he believes in and I'll show you a man who routinely gets his ass kicked and his stuff taken from him by someone who is prepared and willing. Stay strong, brothers--America's gonna need real men in the years to come.
Such a dignified couple, And Mr Heston even there is a source of inspiration to us all, even more so with his bravery. God bless them both. If only more of us could be that strong , respectable and moral . I salute them both.
I admired this man for his acting and for the movies he did which were ahead of its time many times. Respect him even more after seeing this video. Kudos from Belize.
Such a formidable couple. I am really impressed by their dignity and the love that existed between them both. It is something really uplifting. Bless them both.
Yes! Mr. Heston seemed to be a man of integrity. It was nice to have met him at two different events. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3-XGG7n4nCk.html
That was tough to watch. Charlton Heston was and always will be a hero to me. He brought joy to millions through his fantastic performances in so many incredible films and was incredibly proud of his Scottish ancestry. R.I.P. Chuck.
I remember reading that his son, Frasier, said what Alzheimer's did to his father was just horrific. It is a horrible disease, hopefully, someday, doctors will find a cure for it.
Lori Brom it is a horrible disease my grandfather who died in 2015 at age 85 suffered from it from age 70 when got early onset and it progressively got worse by time he was 75 and older he was having more issues with memory including short term although he could remember events in his life when was young. He was put in a nursing home by 78 and had his drivers license taking away. He farmed for over 50 years and farmed until he was about 75 before he told no longer able to.
A truly heart wrenching interview.. I have such fond memories of Charlton Heston in so many great movies.. To see his beautiful, strong wife Lydia speak with such candor and to see him able to respond so eloquently is truly a testament to their love...
I hadn't seen this before. I still remember when I was twelve years old I saw the movie "Diamond Head" and him riding a horse through the rain. He made a big impression and was my first movie star love. No matter what he was always my favorite, my hero. He always will be.
Charlton Heston played Moses, Judah Ben Hur, and many others, but he WAS El Cid! All the grace and nobility and courage in that man were poured into the role of Rodrigo de Bivar, known to history and to legend as El Cid. God bless you, Charlton!
I met charlton in 1988,by chance in the museum gardens in york..could not believe it was him,and so being a cheeky sod I asked him if it was him. we talked for over an hour, imagine that..my idol..hollywood legend talking to me! what an amazing man he was. sadly missed.
He was such a incredible actor. There wasn't one movie I ever saw him that I didnt enjoy him in. You can always watch them over and over. He was a remarkable person in real life. Beautiful couple they were. You could tell they loved each other and were happily married.
Charlton Heston oh man, such amazing man. He made some truly great Films. I love him in Soylent Green, Ten Commandments, Ben Hur, Omega Man and ofcourse Planet of the Apes. RIP Legend.
Robert Delich I met him on the island of Kauai @ The Kauai Surf hotel, what a true Gentleman very family oriented not many like him in todays Hollywood
It made me cry when Charlton Heston said,"I can part the Red Sea but I can't part away from you, which is why I won't exclude you from this stage in my life." This is the most faithful actor I've ever known and heaven surely couldn't wait for him becuase of his gentleness and kindness as his wife said about him.
@@RobespierreThePoof The problem is not whether good manners is a bad thing, it's who gets to decide what are good or what are bad manners. Those who appoint themselves to the position of PC police often become tyrannical or even fanatical in their pursuit to eliminate anything they perceive as inappropriate or stereotypical. Every conversation, every article written is examined for what they may perceive as a slight. It never ends. It makes communicating laborious and unpleasant. People live in constant fear that what they say and do can be used to shame them into submission. The fear of losing their jobs, career, family and friends is a powerful weapon. No my friend it's not just gibberish, it's tyranny with manners. And it's tearing America and even the World apart.
@Grant Dave You can plainly see it by all the rats fleeing the sinking boat. When Trump was riding high they were all on board. But once he lost the election, wether fair or not, they scurried away.
Left out of this article was his support for the Civil Rights movement and Martin Luther King. He put black actors in front of the cameras and Black professionals behind the cameras. I will always respect him for that.
