Although it may not be to your usual audience, I'd like to see a mature and adult discussion about where the various swear words in English come from. From what I can see, they all come down to either Sex, Religion or biological functions, which have changed over time to fit the society.

We've been thinking about a video on this topic for a long time, there's lots of good etymology and of course fascinating social and historical elements. Things like RU-vid standards and issues of demonetization are one potential problem, and we also don't want to produce anything that upsets regular viewers if it pops into their feed... but we're still thinking about it! Maybe it would make a good Patreon goal... and the first minute could just be a series of content warnings! ;)

This made me wonder if the word "hijinks" is related to "jinx", and I dunno, it might be. But what I did find in my cursory search was that the concept of saying "jinx", as an interjection that you say when you and another person say the same thing simultaneously, also exists in Swedish, except there apparently the word is "smurf".

Yeah, it looks like high-jinks may be related to jinks, 'a quick turn to elude a pursuer', though 'highjinks' for 'games' is actually attested in the 17th century, earlier than 'jinks' in the 18th century. But seemingly unrelated to 'jinx', sadly. But that piece of info about Swedes saying 'smurf' is amazing, thanks for that!

There are a number of good etymological dictionaries; there’s a list of my basic resources here: www.alliterative.net/general-credits

Is there a reason that so many words for magic come from words for speaking, singing, or reciting?

It shows the power of speech and song, I guess. I don't know of any more specific reason than that, I'm afraid.

He didn’t say whether there was a jinx, or who cast it if there was, so I think he’s fine
