This is the Charvel I've been waiting for. HSS configuration and Gotoh 2 point tremolo. The icing on the cake is the amazing caramelised maple neck. Possibly the best neck I've owned.
Local store ordered three for customers - had a chance to try one. It is an incredible guitar. The neck is comfortable and appears to be once piece but it has a thick fingerboard. The action is fast and smooth. And it has a great tonal range - SD pickups. And it appears to have a heavier trem block.
Great video! Well...I second that with "the best neck I've owned" and it really does play and smell as good as everyone says. I went and bought one of these a year ago and haven't put it down since! also digging the skid row riffs at the end :)
Mr Ryan.....Sir....you are a HOOT! AND a frickin MONSTER player..!! Geez! ...that model Charvel does seem quite interesting....it’s non- locking....? Yes? I have a San Dimas that I love, but this one has some lovely tones. I’m not sure there are very many players who would want to get up....after you’ve had your turn....Lordy ...I love your stuff ! Hearing you play makes me want to do two things....first ...sell all my guitars....but then I usually just go practice. Ha ha... have good weekend bro ! 👏🏻😆🎸
I just bought a barely used one. The fret edges were sharp as a knive. I suppose, that the fretboard has shrinked a bit. So I sanded the edges with 2000 grit sandpaper and polished the frets afterwards. A fantastic guitar with a great variety of sounds!
Just found this guitar model by chance about two weeks ago but it's already my next guitar. Just looks so nice. Will be a nice complement to my American Strat and Yahama SG.
@@superking7135 Dude, would you believe..I'm still on the verge of that decision.. a full year later! I've bought two other higher end guitars since, but still not the DK24. And it's the one I've always wanted! There's only pink left now...and I'll be lucky if I get one of them! Honestly, now that I'm going to try to pull the trigger tomorrow...I think the pink hss is actually the best one! How did you go getting yours? Did you pull the trigger, or did you wuss out like me?!
@@lueymeteora1410 I got the black HSS, blocked the tail, had custom ‘69 fender pickups installed, and I use Hendrix’s Voodoo strings and it’s EXACTLY everything I wanted in a guitar!
@@superking7135 Oh, congrats dude! That's great to hear. I'm sitting here ,balking at driving in and slapping my $1,700 down on the counter. I'm sure I'll regret this indecision once they are no longer available...and the prices jump. 😱
That sound...'s just WOW ! jaw-dropping BEAUTIFUL ! Amazing playing, by the way ;) I'm considering buying a Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 HH FR M. Just hope the sound is anywhere close to this one. If you got a minute, can you tell me what head and cab are you using, BTW ?
Is there a specific date these are coming out? I know roughly October-ish from when I last checked but I couldn't see a date anywhere. There seems to be barely any reviews/demos of this model anywhere, so if a new one comes out it always makes me giddy in case they're out. Sounds amazing though, great runthrough and playing/tone.
Great review man! What's your take on the tremolo? I have a hard time understanding the differences between a floyd rose and a gotoh 501 when it comes to what you can actually play. For example, can I play some EVH licks or is it too much for this tremolo?
Love mine. But I whacked 250k pots and some vintage output pickups in her. Much better suited to me now. Great great guitar. Original Duncan’s were just to brutal for my Mayer vibe ;)
Can you go into depth about what you mean? I want to get one of these and put Strat fat 50s in the middle and neck pickup. I basically want a nice warm Strat sound that also can absolutely shred.
@@aquatichighs to be honest I sold the guitar. Never ended up fully gelling with it. Added more vintage pickup and also so more vintage spec’d single coils and HB. I think the fact that neck single sits further back also adds something I didn’t like. Brilliant playing guitar. Just not for me long term.
I say just get one.. sell it when they there's a new model with SS but don't hold your breath.. charvel aka fender has been asked to do SS for decades...
@@kenmasters007 A Charvel without Humbuckers.....is a Fender! The only reason to get a charvel is if you want a hotrodded Fender. If you don't want the "mods"... then surely you want just a Fender.... Right?!
Are the frets dressed properly? I checked one out at the music store and I liked it but the frets were bitey on the sides. I was just wondering if that was an issue on a fluke? I had them order another one.
Seems like they are out at year's end. Love to try it. Super unimpressed with AZ by Ibanez btw. Curious to try Quayle's, but I'm a gonna try that Charvel Govan...as well....Bank accounts are weeping.....But the price is worth it for a decent setup job. I fear Indonesia and Mexico setup....Fear.
Yeah, I think it just wins, right?? No need to go crazy A-Bing any more super S's..just do what God clearly intends..get this one! ...Now, all that remains is go all beautiful-minds deciding the colour..."Salmon Pink, Army Drab Green, Slate Grey...Aaaargh!"

Hi James, great video. This guitar doesn't have locking nut, but only locking tuners. Is it still tuned when you are using tremolo more aggressivelly? Thanks
What are your thoughts on this guitar for a non shredder/no heavy player? Also what is the neck profile like? Looking for a strat looking guitar with a humbucker with a thinner neck profile.. and this is in my fave colour (shell pink!)
The neck profile is delicious! Thinner than a regular Strat but not crazy shredneck thin. I'll be using this guitar mostly for non-shredding activites. The clean tones are ace!
Yeah I wondered that same thing. I guess it can’t be quite as good on the neck pickup as a 22 fret model. But as you’ll see in the video, I am still loving the neck sound. So I guess it is a small compromise but it’s not really obvious when you’re playing
hey james, was planning on getting this guitar. Is the neck as slim or almost like a Wizard II ibanez neck? it's what i'm used to playing. I returned the Ibanez AZ prestige i bought because the neck is too thick, it's very uncomfortable.
Wait until the 2019 NAMM Show,I'm sure they will release more colours then,I wouldn't be surprised if they even release a model with flame/quilt or all natural look. They did the same with the San Dimas and So Cal Pro Mod models.
Charvel:real S.Duncans, not ''designed by S.Duncan'' like the Ibanez AZ or Ola Englund's ''Sola'' models, real Made in USA Duncans, EVH volume/tone pots, locking tuners,Graphtech TUSQ nut,GOTOH bridge, locking tuners, compound radious fretboard,roasted/baked/caramelised/whatever they call it maple neck(basically the cook the necks in an oven to get all the humidity out) plus it has graphite reinforcement and it has the trusrod wheel over the neck pickup, for easy adjustment and the neck heel is sculped for better upper fret access. PRS SE: made in S,Korea pickups, shitty tremolo(it's not like the USA PRS trem system),cheapo nut(plastic, cut out only for one type of string sizes),no locking tuners. If you plan to use the tremolo, replace *ALL* the hardware, otherwise, welcome in ''out of tune country''. Also,no graphite reinforcement,no compound radious on the neck, but it has a pretty, paper thin flame maple veneer on it. and it has more colour options.
@@siricortana9550 Just to add to my comment: The Korean PRS SE Series are extremely well build guitars,I own a 2013 SE Tremonti Custom ltd edt.,which has great build quality,I've put S.Duncans and a Graphtech TUSQ nut, plus a new Hipshot tremolo on it. Now the guitar plays and sounds amazing.Problem is,their prices have gone up and now it's not worth to spend money on upgrades to mod them, when you can buy Charvel for just 150 Euros more and don't have to mod anything. I would just wait until January 2019,when the NAMM Show starts, because I'm sure Charvel will release more colours for these DK24 Pro Mods.Right now, they only have 2 different colours for the H-S-S and 2 other for the H-S-H model.
Was thinking about buying this one, but unfortunately it doesn’t come with stainless frets, and I swore never to buy another guitar with nickel frets...closest thing that has SS is the Guthrie model which is three times the price of this one lol
Nick K the same for me. Have Tom Anderson, Suhr, Guthrie Govan (2) and Warmoth stainless steel frets for all my strats and they sound amazing. Next one will be Ibanez AZ ;)
Make SURE you try the AZ series BEFORE you buy it, or you order it from somewhere that will accept returns. I did not personally care for the neck profile...It's very chunky, and a huge surprise coming from Ibanez. I didn't mind the 12" radius but the neck just felt so much like a baseball bat especially right in the middle / sweet spot, around the 5th-9th fret. I'm sure I could get used to it, as anyone could, though.
Charvel has horrible taste in finishes. I ended up just getting natty mahogany HSH with gold hardware. Nothing is more gimmicky than a satin bright blue finish. You can't clean it or do anything to it. It looks good for like 6 months. At least a grainy finish wears in well.
james ryan I just bought a hardtail San Dimas and now I’m thinking about getting one of these roasted DK24. But I find the tuning is very poor on the San Dimas. If I bend a couple of times it’s out of tune. How’s the stability on your guitar? And when using the trem? Also, the quality control seems a bit off in the Mexico factory because mine came with a mark above the nut like they started to cut at the wrong place and then changed their mind. Nut even seems to not sit straight as well. Hmm. Not a great first impression of Charvel Mexico.
Chrismayo1981 I got a San Dimas and returned it almost immediately due to extremely bad and cheap hardware. Really turned me off on MIM guitars in general. Ordered a Tom Anderson Angel Player instead, tired of poor quality guitars.
@@woolgum My experience with the DK24 is that the gotoh bridge, good nut and locking tuners make for a great quality instrument. I have some really nice Gibsons and Custom built guitars, and the Charvel holds up to them in terms of quality. I have zero complaints.
Yeah because a 90's Shredder guitar that have passed multiple owner's must in fact have all the Fret's pristine new and the FR Blades must new like as well. Also lets hope for a Straight neck Fretjob= 300 + another 300 for the FR. Can you sense the savings?
Embree Smith I too prefer set necks but with a guitar like this the easier thing to do would be a threaded insert conversion. It’s very easy to do and can solve all the problems that typical bolt on guitars have. In my experience what usually happens is that years down the road, the neck will start to shift around in the pocket and become loose...with threaded inserts that is very unlikely to happen (provided the person doing them knows wtf they are doing and glues them in!), and you still get the benefit of being able to take the neck off if you want to. Not sure why more builders don’t use them, but I talked to John Page about this and he’s used them for years.
What a fucking waste of a guitar, they couldn't put SS frets in there? It's pretty much doable since the price of Nickel vs Stainless is just $2 (pre cut wires).
the colors are awful for all the hss series but the model is good The problem with the san dimas is a lack of brightness-trebles vs a real strat so not good enough for the price and sustain is not very good from what i listen here
