People "hate" on Brock because he isn't the prototype QB. He isn't 6'4"+. He doesn't have a cannon arm. He isn't fast. He doesn't shrug off sacks like Big Ben. He wasn't high on anyone's draft board. So on and so forth. People HATE looking wrong/bad and are waiting for Brock to "turn into a pumpkin" and look like that Mr Irrelevant QB. They are wait... salivating... for him to have a bad game so they can make their "I told you so" videos - their "Defense have figured him out" videos.

@@ChaseDanielShow - Agreed 100%. You played in the league for 8 teams. I think you would agree that "System QB" is an ignorant garbage take. Every team has a system. I think people are also mad that SF went from Lance to Jimmy to Brock in one season and made the NFC Championship game while other teams, such as the the Jets this year, know the season is pretty much over once their #1 guy goes down. So, it must be the system, right? Plug anyone in and get success... right? Like Brian Hoyer, C. J. Beathard, Nick Mullens, Nate Sudfeld, Jose Rosen, etc. right? RIGHT?!?

It's understated how accurate and on time you have to be to run Shanahans offense. Everything is a timing route and it relies heavily on a QB that can process information quickly, get through his progressions quickly and with confidence and throw accurately, even the short stuff. If you're late or second guessing yourself at anytime, it all falls apart.

@@ChaseDanielShow We don't know his exact score because it's privileged info and I don't know why or if scouts are really taking it into account, but Purdy's S2 Cognitive test was up in the mid 90s. Which means the game simply never goes to fast for his cognitive ability. Those quick reads you highlighted, right now, only a handful of QBs in the NFL can do. Kyle's offense reminds me so much of Bill Walsh's west coast offense. @11:00 was on purpose we do it in basketball “all the time.” Point guard can see the defenders footwork whether or not if he can see both man and ball. This usually happens with back door passes. “Just turning around” is better said than done when ball is placed to guide the two guard to the basket. We do this in Fast Break scenarios too. We even have drills for this.

Joe Montana said it well. Reporter - Joe how come you are so calm and cool when you played quarterback? Joe - You know when you are at school, and if you studied for the test, you take the test calmly and confidently because you know the answers. If you did not study, then you are scrambling trying to come up with the answer. I know where every player is going to be and what the defense is going to do, so the decision is made fast. Brock knows where everyone is going to be, because he takes his job seriously and is prepared. Like Joe (not calling him a Montana) Brock is prepared.

I think purdy's left handed dropbacks are because of last year's nfc championship game. On long developing plays it allows him to see the rush on his blind side as he's dropping. Then the turn at the top of his drop allows him to see the rush from the other side. I bet that's why he's doing that on long developing plays. It's brilliant.

@gibster9624
@gibster9624 8 месяцев назад
What bothers me more is how these 2 terms don't mean what they were originally meant to mean. People have muddied them up so much to just mean anything. Game manager was supposed to mean the opposite of gunslinger. A guy who won't make mistakes but also won't make huge plays for you, Ala Alex Smith. Didn't have a bunch of TDs but also didn't have interceptions and didn't create when the play broke down. System QB was supposed to mean a guy who makes great plays into good plays. Basically making it harder than it needed to be. For example system QBs are reliant on 50/50 balls to make big plays, they aren't playing with any timing and rhythm and force a lot of throws they shouldn't. The guy I think of they is the definition of a system QB is because all of his big plays were reliant on receivers like Bolden to make an exceptional play. And you saw that when he didn't have those weapons he just kept trying to force things that he just didn't need to all the risk none of the reward.

@@gibster9624 Yep people are just lazy with analyst work. I look at a systematic as someone who lines up with a play and simply throws the ball to their best option, which is every QB in the NFL, what I think they mess up on is the defined definition is adding the intangible when they talk about it. For example, is he ONLY a systematic QB or is he a great IMPROVISOR QB as well. Meaning, when he takes the play that is part of your system as he walks up to the line, is he looking at what defenses are doing pre-snap, is he processing what the best option is now after seeing what they are doing, once he snaps the ball does he know what he should do if that best option is gone (improvising) or is he simply going to force a throw with the play he has. Purdy isnt ONLY a systematic QB, he has many more intangible, but to label him as if he only lines up and runs plays is limiting him. I honestly dont know to many QB who are successful playing directly under center who can simply be a System only QB. That also goes for the term Game manager, if they are looking between the two terms for people, Mangers or Leaders Either you are a Manager or a Leader. Leaders are natural managers, but managers are not leaders, Purdy is a leader, that "C" on his chest points that out.

Sooo many people have been questioning and criticizing the 49er qb position for years and when they finally find someone that fits their system and is succeeding....they dont want to believe it? And go as far as discrediting his ability?.....i do not get it

i'm a cowboys fan... i watched one 49ers video and youtube starts showing me all y'alls stuff. i'm 56 years old and been watching since staubach was in... the proof is in the pudding... brock purdy is a winner. i think y'all need to stop worrying about what everyone else is saying. he may not win the mvp... but he's got a shot to win something bigger. a lot of mvp candidates can't say that... i think y'all have your next joe montana. dan marino has more mvp's than joe montana. go cowboys!! i hope we both stay injury free. thank God for football...

@ChaseDanielShow To your point about Purdy and the left dropback. After the NFCCG and the elbow injury Kittle came up to him and asked if he could throw lefty, Brock said he couldn't. Purdy mentioned on New Heights podcast that in the off-season while rehabbing he has also worked on throwing with his left hand as well. So I can only assume after hearing and seeing that Shanahan and Greise have drawn up some plays that make it look like it's going to throw left. He has also really seemed to develop the flipping of his hips to accommodate that quick left to right transition and that has sped up his reads as well.

Earned a follow!!! Great work Chase keep on chasing. Good take on the left side. Look at the defense especially the secondary's body, either they are flat footed or body is turned the same direction and then within a split second Brock turns and slings it. Definitely a design play. In the nfl a split second can be the difference between winning and losing your matchups.

To add usually the receivers are the ones who create the separations, in this case Brock was the one to create.

There was a point in time where I thought he was left handed from seeing him do the left hand drop backs, I never really put it together though, It has got to be confusing to a defense the first couple of times. It's seems like it would be difficult to just hop turn and put enough power behind the throw be he manages it.

What was huge scuttlebutt during training camp was Purdy was throwing 1-2 pick-6s per day. He was still having the positives, but it was hard to focus on the good stuff when there were the glaring concerns. The hope was the Niners defense was just _that good._ So far that has been the case.

Is the left handed drop a timing thing? Does it slow his process down intentionally? It clearly takes some time to rotate out of the left handed footwork.

Hoyer, Mullens, Beathart, Garoppolo, Lance... they all had the same system, but none of them made the offense look as threatening... What should a QB do on the field? - hand the ball to the runner - Throw passes where the defender cannot intercept or hit and that only the offensive one receives - read defensive - change the formation if necessary - know when to run or when not to run Now, which of these points does Purdy get wrong? Then... what should a QB not do on the field? - risk a move - turnover the ball - throw interceptions - make wrong calls - be afraid of blitz - make wrong decisions Now, which of these things has Purdy done? So, on subjective issues that he should make a QB - to know the system - be respected by your teammates - impose yourself on the field - do not be afraid - patience - cold head In which of these does Purdy fail? then, if it were the system, Hoyer, Mullens, Cj or Lance would have shone just like Brock Purdy... but it didn't happen like that.... quite the opposite those who say "Purdy shines because he has Deebo, Aiyuk and CMC..." then those who believe in that argument immediately disqualify Montana because he had Rice, Taylor, Brent Jones and Roger Craig and only for that It was good... or Aikman wasn't good, but he had Irving, Emmit Smith and Jay Novacek... sounds stupid...

Im just holding my breath on Brock but it does feel different this time. Fingers crossed.

Purdy is really good given how little experience he had in the NFL before the had his first start. He also is lucky he has so many weapons to throw at or pitch the ball too. I don't know if Purdy is elite now, but he sure has the potential to be elite.

7:00 he doesn’t have the strongest of arms but people underestimate that quick snappy release, it’s hard to read QBs that throw like this. Say if this was another qb with a stronger arm but not quite as quick of a release, the db would be on the back already… it’s be a complete pass but the play would stop right where the ball is thrown but Purdy gives the playmakers a chance to make a move.

Seems that the most important thing and rarest is that a qb can grasp the entire offensive system in full detail and can operate that system and process it so quickly and accurately and reliably that he can actually IMPROVISE in time and in tune , while operating within the offense so he doesn't lose his teamates . Purdy is like a jazz or rock soloist - keeps the time, keeps the key and creates.

Chase.. him dropping back to the left (left handed) is because RT is our weak spot on the OL while Trent Williams (LT) is the best in the league. Those plays require more time to develop and also serves to divert attention to the left when the play is intended to go right.

Great breakdown, Chase. One question on the deep post to Aiyuk. Obviously theres a bit of luck as the safety (#34) completely bails and sprints back to the deep middle. But how much of that completion is Purdy seeing that and intentionally thowing short and leading Aiyuk behind the bailing DB vs how much of it is pure luck and just an underthrow?
