I guess he only had one round. At no point in the movie did he use it other than that one time and he never stated that he used it off screen. Not to mention he wouldn't have used that weapon during the ambush. On another note, once they dealt with that first sheaker. Probably would have been a good idea to go back to their truck and grab the two carbines that they had.... They had plenty of ammo and would have been much more effective at dispatching the remaining ones.
