Thanks for the recap Jeff! Stoked to finally see my footage on the channel twice in one week! This race was less than a year after I started racing, definitely a lot of tactical mistakes here but I’ve learned a lot from watching the channel the last few years!

I'm the guy in the maize Michigan kit, very cool to watch this race back! Was my first race in the B's, so sorry for not helping at all to chase down the break @CRBenham20. Vividly remember that crash too😮

My max HR is about 203-205 usually. So I was definitely on the limit. But I was in really good shape at the time and could recover very well from a high HR.

Yea he was a jr rider that definitely needed some better pack skills. Not sure why they let them into a 3/4 field in the first place but this is a pretty casual early season race / clinic.

When did AAVC move their training races from near the airport out to Dexter? Could it have been coincident to the opening of the Jolly Pumpkin microbrewery in that industrial park they currently race on?
@laurensdejong6149

We moved in 2021. It wasn't coincidence that Jolly Pumpkin was also there (they were there earlier, though); but sadly the brewery is closed on Sundays.

At only :25 seconds in to the video, it was obvious the guy who caused that crash at the final turn (black and white shorts, blue jersey) was a sketchy rider. Don't want to discourage him from racing, but he needs to learn how to handle his bike otherwise he's going to endanger himself and others. First recommendation is for him to lower is seat to the correct height because it's definitely too high (hence the large hip shift side to side every time he pedals).
@savonaaaron
@savonaaaron 7 месяцев назад
He was 14 at the time and was reacting to what happened in front of him.
@willkelsay7218
@willkelsay7218 7 месяцев назад
@@savonaaaron I agree he was reacting to the rider in front of him, but as Jeff mentions, he over reacts and that causes the riders behind/next to him to have to respond. Learning to react appropriately as the group shifts around you is one factor to safely racing crits. I stand by my original comment, that he needs to learn to handle his bike better before mixing it up in races like this. I know it's only an early season race/clinic, but tell that to the guy who took a digger because of this kid.
@willkelsay7218
@willkelsay7218 7 месяцев назад
And as stated before, I don't want to discourage him from participating (especially as a junior), but I personally don't feel that learning bike handling skills in a race is the right way to do it.
@kidsafe
@kidsafe 7 месяцев назад
His hips aren't necessarily rocking from overextension. They're rocking because he has a significant tracking issue that needs to be further examined. In fact, in most frames, his maximum leg extension and ankling is well within norms. I agree that he needs to learn to ride in a straight line and that he shouldn't have entered the corner with slight wheel overlap. When the rider in front of him took the corner more aggressively he had no escape route.
@CRBenham20
@CRBenham20 7 месяцев назад
I vividly remember how squirrelly this kids riding was from that race. He had good fitness to stay in the pack, but he was constantly darting left and right out of no where and nearly chopping peoples wheels. Definitely should have done more group rides and Jr only races before jumping into a men’s 3/4 field.

It was indeed a sora group set that came on my base model 2015 specialized Allez. I have since upgraded the entire group set to 11spd 105 with an fsa carbon crank, carbon seatpost, and a set of 50mm carbon rims. None of which I had during this race though lol

@CRBenham20
@CRBenham20 7 месяцев назад
Thanks. The bike (2015 Allez) has been totally upgraded since this race. Basically only the frame and bars are the same. New 105 groupset, new carbon seatpost/saddle, and new carbon wheels. But I absolutely love this specialized Allez frame set. It’s been though a lot, like taking out a mailbox with no problems hahaha

@@CRBenham20 Killer fitness man. I say your easily Cat 3 holding that HR and power the way you did and taking on the lead out so much. I too am new and def. made this mistake often for 1st 4 races I did.

@overlandingfamily yea I ended up getting plenty of upgrade points last year and moved up to cat 3 at the start of 2023. Didn’t get any big results this year in cat 3 though. Just a bunch of mid pack finishes and a few top 10s.
