Payette Lake in central Idaho is large natural lake located near the resort town of McCall. This scenic lake is a popular tourist destination town during the heat of the summer and is not well known for its fishing opportunities. The lake support Rainbow Trout, Kokanee, and Lake Trout (Mackinaw). Recent efforts to help bolster the lake's Kokanee population and increase the average size of resident Lake Trout by netting out the overpopulated Lake Trout appear to be having success.

I enjoyed this post from a lake I knew, and well, from more than 30 years ago as a worker at the fish hatchery there and a fellow fish biology student. Your update regarding how the fishery in the lake has been managed was good for me to hear. We fished from float tubes for lake trout to no avail. Fishing kayaks were not invented yet I do believe. At the time I was there I also surveyed anglers in Cascade Reservoir where there was a good kokanee fishery.

I am less than an hour from so many lakes over here. I am anxious to get after some Kokanee this summer. I have pontoon boat with a Honda 150 on it. I am deciding between the trolling socks or a trolling plate on the out drive to be able to slow down to about 2 mph so I can troll for these fish. Thanks again for your content. Take care.

If i remember the lakes in Idaho are supposed to have a restriction for powerboating until 10 am. can't remember if payette has that. I do remember how frothed up that lake would get in the afternoon though. eesh.

Nice eyeopener, thanks for your sharing an overlooked resource at Payette Lake. Cascade Lake, just south is also producing kokanee. Question- Will you do some research into drifting nymphs, chronomids, as an alternative to trolling dodgers, seem like that really pays off, particularly just after "the bite" turns off. They seem to be feeding, not agressivly but actively. Thanks much keep up the great vids.
@spiltmilt

I know a fair number of folks who drift chironomid flies in the spring when they are surface feeding but I imagine its much more difficult during the summer when they are deeper.

Catching kokanee from kayaks is my husband and I favorite way to fish. We really appreciate how you explain things based on science, plus discuss the kokanee management at each of the lakes you visit. We favor fishing for kokanee during springtime (mostly to avoid boaters), but this year we can't get away until August. What is the latest you would fish for kokanee? I know they spawn in the fall, but when does the meat quality start to drop off? Does the latitude of the lake affect when this occurs (i.e., southern vs northern)? We will plan accordingly if we could some good kokanee fishing in.

Going for kokanee but I'd be happy with some lake trout and rainbows too. Do you think it's too late in season for kokanee success? Any tips for where to fish for kokes at Payette, such as where to put in and approx how many feet off the shore?

Great video's. I have learned a lot about Kokanee fishing from you. I'm thinking of fishing Brewster Pool in Washington. Where is the best place to launch a trailered boat? Do local bait shops in area have the Loonie Coonie Shrimp Baits I can pick up when I arrive. Any other tip[s you can provide would be much appreciated as I will be traveling from Central California to Washington (over 800 miles). Thank you

The best launch is in the town of Brewster itself. There is an unimproved gravel launch up the Okanogan River along Monse River Rd that suitable for small boats and kayaks. No local bait resources so bring your own. Its not hard to find the fishing grounds as there will be a 200 other boats there.
