Chasing the iconic Southern Aurora Passenger Train; 60th Anniversary Tour to Melbourne

On the 24th April 2022 Transport Heritage NSW in conjunction with St James Rail operated the iconic Southern Aurora passenger train for its 60th anniversary with a trip to Melbourne. Operating between the 16th April 1962 & and the 2nd August 1986; the Southern Aurora was the premiere express passenger train between Sydney and Melbourne; utilising a fleet of first class lounge, dining and sleeper stainless steel carriages operated jointly by the Department of Railways New South Wales and the Victorian Railways.
Having depart Sydney on the 23rd April 2022 at 8pm, in this video we chase the Southern Aurora as it travels though Victoria into Melbourne. The train was hauled by SRHC locomotives S303, P22 & T357; marking the first time a Victorian locomotive has hauled the train (both in service and preservation) in over 30 years, and S303's first passenger train since being converted to standard gauge.
We see the train at multiple locations along the line, including Chiltern, Glenrowan, Avenel, Broadford and others, before seeing the train arrive into Melbourne's Southern Cross Station. We also see the train at Violet Town where the train stopped at the station to commemorate those lost during the Violet Town rail accident on the 7th February 1969 when the Southern Aurora collided head on with a freight train.

Well done, Alex. Watching this made up for not being there. Glad to see you managed to get great coverage of the event. I have fond memories of several journeys on this train in the mid-70s in my capacity as Rail Tour Escort for VicRail's Package Tour Section. You should certainly look at that Vintage 1967 movie "Going Our Way" suggested by John D in the comments. Wonder what the actor playing the Station Assistant, Barry Casey, actually finished up doing as a career. I was quite taken aback by the station scenes at 1967 Glen Waverley. The background to much of the coverage has certainly changed. Had a chuckle at Tom James, Chief Traffic Manager, as he described his past with "The Overland", complete with concertina covers shunting past. Towards the end there was a soundtrack of a rather loud S Class loco with an excessively whining roots blower - memories of S310, one of the 1980's era railfans' favourite locomotives. Thanks again for the great coverage of this event.

Outstanding footage, but chasing this iconic train was made easier as the P class (attached at Goulburn NSW) failed within a few minutes so the S and the T had extra tonnage to haul as a 'dead weight' to Southern Cross, Melbourne, Victoria. From the sound of it departing today (Tuesday 26 April 2022), the P was repaired at McIntyre Loop while stabled. The climb to Glenrowan, and later from Wandong up to Heathcote Junction were especially great parts of your clear, well filmed video. The 'Aurora', 'Spirit of Progress' and 'Intercapital Daylight' were all great trains on which to travel even if the 'ICD' could be rough at times. I was fortunate to use all three as well as the 1986-93 'Sydney/Melbourne Express' that was a combined smaller 'SA' and 'SoP'. The memories of dining, sitting in the lounge car and retiring to a comfortable roomette or even better, twinette sleeper. No lines at airport security screening or cramped aircraft seats!

A great feature of the SA was that it docked into its platform both at Sydney and Melbourne just over an hour before departure so that passengers and family or friends could have a meal together in the dining car. At about 10 inches before departure the head steward warned non-travellers to finish and leave. A gentler, less hurried age.

This is growse. I love the S class loco's. I remember in the early 80s there were still three different trains running between Melbourne and sydney, The Spirit Of Progress in the blue & yellow Vic livery, The Southern Aurora in silver and the Intercapital Daylight in unknown colours......... I never travelled on it as we only used the Overland to Adelaide for Xmas holidays. This train looks awesome though.

The Intercspital Daylight used NSW Tuscan Red airconditioned coaches with lots of windows. Holiday times there would often be second divisions of these trains to cope with extra demand using the best available spare coaches.

On one of my Train DVD's titled Tracks and Trains of Australia it featured a news snippet from The Southern Aurora's final run and also the replacement The Sydney/Melbourne Express which comprised carriages from The Southern Aurora and The Spirit of Progress. G516 was to be the loco that hauled the final run from Albury however when it arrived into Spencer Street as it was known then it was 1 hour 40 minutes late. Funny thing was when ABC News interviewed some of the passengers some of them had no idea that they were on the last run until they were told about it.

@@ThebusofdoomFSX Sadly not i'm afraid unlike the last run of The Old Ghan via Oodnadatta on November the 24th 1980 which at both Port Pirie and Alice Springs did have pomp and fanfare. Even that was not without it's faults for one thing The Old Ghan was nearly two hours late pulling out of Marree by the time the passengers changed from standard to narrow gauge. Many of those who travelled on the last Old Ghan had waited since 1979 to share a place in history.
