Your videos got me started about 4 years ago but I never saw this one. It parallels my experiences, though. I started out smoking cherry and vanilla aromatics but on my second round of ordering tobacco, Cornell & Diehl caught my eye with some blends named for aspects of HP Lovecraft's world. I ended up buying a tin of "Awakened Elder" to see what this unknown-to-me-at-the-time company thought eldritch horror tasted like. I opened the tin and immediately got the smell of campfire. Completely the opposite of what I thought I wanted out of pipe tobacco. The complete opposite of what I imagined myself smoking. I packed a loose bowl in a fresh corn cob pipe, and told myself I must get through the whole bowl before judging it... I could not believe how much depth there was to the flavor compared to what I was smoking before, and the various flavor changes as the temperature changes and as the sugars caramelize. I smoked the whole tin in two days. I proceeded to spend a ridiculous amount of money on tinned tobacco including pounds of Dunhill Early Morning and Nightcap, both of which were discontinued and I had no idea for two whole years because that's how long it took me to go through what I bought that night. It's all the more surreal since there are no pipe or tobacco stores anywhere near me and I think I might be the only pipe smoker in all of Brooklyn.

Finally smoked my first English blend, Presbyterian Mix. Prior to this I had been turned towards aromatics such as Blue Note and Lane Black Raspberry by a local tobaccanist, and while they were lovely smokes (for the most part), I was interested in expanding my pallet. His selection of non aromatic blends was very underwhelming, so I budged and went online to get together a variety of blends. Glad I did. Got myself some Dunhill Dark Flake, Captain Earle's Private Stock, and Presbyterian Mix. Very optimistic for the future because of how satisfied I was with the Presbyterian.

There is a major difference between casings and toppings. A topping will be put on the tobacco fir the final flavor where as a casing is just a sugary preservative that will lightly enhance the raw tobacco.
@testchannelone6616
@testchannelone6616 Год назад
Yeah, I found his vid confusing regarding casings and toppings. What you're saying is that topping is flavor but casing is a preservative. I don't understand how flavor topping can be on a non-aromatic. Cheers.

When describing tobacco flavour I think it is important to remember that everyone's palette is unique. For example, as soon as you said that you got a molasses taste instead of a licorice taste, I immediately thought that I have had some molasses that tasted just like some licorice.

Yeah I had a pack of tobacco that was labelled "apples and currant" and tasted like it, but when I gave the bag to my neighbour and she smelled it she said it was prunes. Another package that I had bought, the seller said it was just a blend of virginias and burley, and it tasted to me like a good non aromatic blend, but when I studied the package, it was written that it tastes like vanilla. Although the tobacco itself smells indeed lightly like vanilla, I can't taste it in the smoke...

Nice video sir. Just a different perspective here, but as someone who does not enjoy aromatic tobaccos, I LOVE Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky. I started off trying drugstore aromatics and it nearly turned me off of the pipe smoking hobby before I even got started good. I lean heavily towards Virginia/Perique blends and straight Virginias, but still very much enjoy the DSK. So I think those are great blends you mentioned for everyone to try, no matter what their opinion of aromatics. I enjoy watching your videos. Keep it up.

Super super helpful. I'm sort of a novice but I'm learning a lot from your reviews / tips/ I have to be careful on VA blends especially with the aromatic I have ... the reason tongue bite. I've found some VA / Cavendish / Burley to be just fine and the one English I picked up called "Navigator" (bulk at our tobacco store) to be super cool. I am ranking my tobacco in a row based on propensity to tongue bite or not. I'm also carefully drying and sipping. it's getting better in most cases. Watched you video on tongue bite and breath method, drying ... it's helped immensely. I find some blends just burn hecka hot so it takes better technique or some special "gift" not to get in trouble.

Another great video! I've been a piper for over a year. I thought I would try a non-aromatic, Dunhill's Nightcap. The name,Nightcap, fooled me. I thought it would be a lite smoke. It, to me, is a strong campfire like smoke. I liked it! BUT, each time I smoke it I get indigestion.

I just finished smoking a bowl of cigar tobacco. The cigars are a couple of Nicarauguan puros that a friend was gifted. He never got around to smoking them and when he gave them to me they were so dried out that they had absolutely no smell that I could detect and they crumbled when handled. Since I have no humidor I put them in a ziplock bag with a large Boveda packet for a couple of months. They now have a nice cigar aroma and they are as good as any non-aromatic I have ever smoked.

Just tried English Blend No.22 by Vauen. It’s a nice introduction to English mixtures when coming from aromatics as it is aromatised with vanilla but it isn’t overkill and gives way to the Latakia in about the last third. Interesting and enjoyable!

I’m a new pipe smoker, and I do not like aromatic tobacco. I got addicted to cigarettes for 5 years after I turned 18. I quit and moved to Vape for a year then quit that and moved to the occasional cigar up until now 29 years old. I’ve never liked flavored tobacco or flavored vape. Dark strong straight tobacco is what I enjoy.
@sansde1ty

My local tobacconist explained it to me in the same way... two types English or American. American being mainly aromatic and English being non aromatic. I’ve been smoking a pipe for a week but have been tempted for a long while. Cigar smoker mainly but sparingly, went with an English Dunhill replacement, the aromatic had too much of synthetic nose. Might be the cigar smoker in me but flavoured and infused cigars are a straight no, it’s hard to shake when it comes to pipe tobacco. I might ask the tobacconist to do me a sampler of aromatics next time I’m there.
@gregs.2679

I'm the same way. Originally a cigar aficionado, I abhor aromatic pipe tobaccos for all of the same reasons that I dislike flavoured cigars. One reason I'm wanting to try out all of the G.L. Pease tobaccos is that Greg has made it pretty clear that he doesn't feel "qualified," as he puts it, to blend aromatics.
@LangstonDev

There are bad aromatics and there are good aromatics. Every flavored cigar I had tasted like ashy butt. There are aromatic pipe tobaccos that way too, but there are some that taste and smell incredible. Wilke has the best tasting aromatics I've had to date - no ashy aftertaste, cool burning, etc., I've also really enjoyed Cult Militia. Really just depends on the individual blend.

New pipe smoker still catching up on old videos. I'm having trouble understanding what an aromatic is then if these blends have flavored toppings but are not aromatics. What distinguishes a blend with flavored topping from a full fledged aromatic blend? Many thanks!
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 лет назад
flamdrags - Ok, a full fledged Aromatic is a blend that has been artificially flavored with a sweet flavoring such as caramel, honey, vanilla, berry, or alcoholic spirits such as bourbon, whisky, or wine. A true non Aromatic is a tobacco that has only sugar water as a preservative. Non Aromatics rely on Virginia tobacco for sweetness, Oriental tobacco for a sour taste, perique for spice, and Latakia for a Smokey taste. You get different taste depending on the amountof each type of tobacco you add to the blend. 👍👍👍

I have found that mixing in an Aramaic tobacco with a strong tobacco like dark fired Kentucky helps with both the nicotine rush and the mellowness of the smoke. Simple if you have a tin that is strong, then cut it with something that is not. My two cents.

I want to stay away from anything with a lot of nicotine. According to what I've read, fire cured Kentucky has a high nicotine (low sugar) content (as does Burly, Green River and Perique). Virginia, Maryland, Turkish / Oriental and flue cured tobaccos have the highest sugar, lowest nicotine.

Old dark fired isn't an aromatic, right? I'm confused. I didn't think old dark fired had any toppings or casings,it is simply steam pressed. (According to my understanding). Does steam pressed mean that the steam is more than just water? The website says there are no flavorings
@MuttnchopPiper

Don't get me wrong - I love your videos. But this one has left me completely confused. Please clarify regarding toppings or casings and non-aromatic. Isn't a casing or topping (like molasses, cherry, etc.) adding an aroma to the natural tobacco (such as Virginia, Burley)? Isn't it a contradiction for there to be a casing on a non-aromatic? Thanks.

Dark fired Kentucky??? I spent many hours working Tobacco in my youth and teen years and never saw anything but air cured Burley :) Man I can still smell that sweet chocolate aroma coming from the barns when stripping time was near. Always LOVED the smell of pure barley hanging in the barn. Perhaps thats why im such a fan of Prince Albert Tobacco. Not because its cheap but because it looks, smells, and tastes like that good stuff we used to watch cure in the barn and then get to strip it when the time came. So far its the closest thing I can find to what I consider " Real Kentucky Burley". Full flavor, chocolate aroma in the smell and taste, and must be smoked cool or else it will bite and the wonderful flavors will go straight to hell. For " cheap" Tobacco ole Prince Albert demands some respect thats for sure. You want that natural tobacco flavor you better smoke ole Price real cool and slow. Im from Allen County, Kentucky by the way....right on the border of Tennessee. Im South east of Bowling Green and almost due north of Nashville. Glad to meet another Kentuckian on youtube my friend! Im surprised your not more of a Burley guy being a Kentuckian and all. Geez I feel all alone out there preferring burley in my pipe LOL

Talking to a friend regarding what exactly is an aromatic tobacco blend. If there is casing/flavor added to the tobacco then it is an aromatic? Not so, my friend said. He said 'all' pipe tobaccos have some sort of flavoring added. Tobacco would taste terrible if you just got a dry tobacco leaf, cut and rubbed it, put it directly into the pipe and then smoked it. If so, then is there a certain percentage of casing/flavor applied to a tobacco that makes it an 'aromatic'?
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 5 лет назад
Stan Kays - Your friend is right, and wrong, all tobacco Aromatic, and Non Aromatic have a casing, if that’s what you want to call it of sugar water to help preserve the tobacco, and give it a little bit longer life, but Non Aromatics have no other casing other then that, Non Aromatics have no flavoring other then sugar water, the taste comes from the combination of blend components that taste different, Virginia a sweet hay note, Latakia has a woodsy note, perique has a spicy note, Orientals, a sour note. Burley a pure tobacco taste, then if you prepare these different components in other ways like if you heat and put Virginia under tremendous pressure, it changes the taste again. When you combine these components in certain increments you create a blend with incredible taste and no flavoring added. Next time you talk to your friend ask him what kind of flavoring they put on Latakia. There is no flavoring added, the taste comes from the tobacco being hung on the ceiling of a room, and the smoke from wood burned underneath is aloud to contact the tobacco causing the tobacco to absorb the smoke changing the flavor. If he gives you any other answer then this, I would take what he says about tobacco with a grain of salt. 👍👍👍

Yes, there is a phenomenon called ghosting. Ghosting is were if you have s pipe dedicated to only Aromatics. Then you smoke an English, when you go back to smoking the Aromatic it will throw the taste off of the Aromatic. Most people who don't know think the tobacco has gone bad and throw it away, so it's important to have 1 pipe for Aromatic's and one dedicated to English blends

Bible made simple, I think it's a policy for tobacco reviews to say no flavoring if the manufacturer does not mention one. Peter heinricks dark strong is practically the same tobacco as orliks dark strong Kentucky, as a mater of fact I heard they are made in the same plant, so yes Peter heinricks does have a topping on their tobacco, what kind of taste are you looking for in a tobacco?

I've been trying the different tobaccos, straight virginia, straight burly, straight oriental etc. to see if I liked one variety over another. It's funny, I wouldn't smoke those for the same reason I avoid aromatics, my scare words are "casing", "topping ", "aromatic " lolol.. pure English man here, note anyone crossing over from premium cigars, that loved the nuances of real tobacco, with no additives... the thought of any applied flavor, topping, casing makes me nauseous! In fact the pipe tobacco I've loved the most, that I can't help smoking 2-3 bowls of since starting is navy escudo, spc potlatch (this is so amazing! ) as soon as I put my nose in the can I was transported to heaven and the smoking was equally heaven, 6 natural tobacco types so much nuance in every pipe full... every aromatic I've tried taste like chemical crap, just like flavoring a premium cigar lol blasphemy hehe

Donn Testa - I have transitioned into smoking all types, English, Virginia, Va/Per’s, and Aromatics. I primarily smoke Non Aromatics, but every once in a while I get a hankering for a good aromatic. 👍👍👍

@@MuttnchopPiper, I meant no condescension, all pipe smokers are brothers of the leaf. Plus you've years of vast experience! Mainly my concern is veteran pipe smokers recommending starters go to aromatics, I think that's a travesty as some like myself would hate that and if I didn't already know about complex natural tobaccos I woulda quit trying the pipe altogether. Even knowing what I wanted and waiting for my tobacco order to arrive, I went to the local pipe shop, and the guy tried pushing aromatics up and down, showing me himself smelling them deep and oohing and ahhing, and when I'm like no, I want English only, I got the line yick ok if that's what you want. Anyway I think this is a mistake of the community. If I didn't know tobacco before coming to pipes, and someone convinced me to start with aromatics, I woulda tried them and stopped right there. Anyway I'm a veteran of the leaf, but new to the pipe :-)

Donn Testa - I’m sorry if my response seemed crass, that was not my intent. I think the primary reason Aromatics are suggested is that for a new pipe smoker who doesn’t even understand how to pack, or light a pipe, it’s felt a sweet blend may convince them to stick with it longer. What should really happen is the tobacconist that is selling you that pipe and tobacco, should also teach you how to do the fundamentals like packing the pipe, lighting the pipe, and smoking the pipe correctly instead of selling them tobacco and sending them on their way, it’s like selling someone a car who has no concept of driving, and saying ok, here are the keys, thanks for coming in. 👍👍👍

I'm the complete opposite. I like cigars, and I feel like these aromatic blends are the same as flavored cigars which to me are for people who want to get into the hobby to look cool vs liking the flavor of tobacco. I'm hesitant to get into the hobby because it seems like the market for pipes is flooded with low quality tobacco that's covered with sugar and called "aromatic blends". Someone please explain where I'm off base here.

I can never decide whether I am a pipe smoker who likes cigars or a cigar smoker who likes to smoke a pipe. Right now, to ensure that I am not smoking anything but tobacco, I sometimes fill my pipe with cigar tobacco. If you have not tried that I think you ought to. I live in Alberta, Canada where a Cohiba Behike, if you can get them, will cost over 100 dollars each. I have never smoked a cigar that cost over 50 dollars, but it is really hard to throw away a cigar butt that represents as much as 20 dollars worth of cigar.

Whats the difference between an aromatic vs a non aromatic?tobacco. Thank you in advance
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 5 лет назад
Juan Ramos - An Aromatic tobacco is blended with a casing or topping, usually sweet like Vanilla, or caramel, or chocolate flavor. A non Aromatic is a combination of tobacco’s that are not cased, and rely on the natural flavor of the type of tobacco, or the way the natural tobacco is prepared for its taste. 👍👍👍

Hey Muttnchop when I'm smoking a blend. I smoke aromatics. They all taste the same to me. When I smell the smoke as its floating through the air, I cam smell the different flavor notes amd profiles. is that something that will change over time, as my palette develops? Kinda like cooking and food tasting.
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 7 лет назад
Kris Syxx - first let me ask how long have you been smoking Aromatics, and what blends by name are you smoking?
@roadkill3881
@roadkill3881 7 лет назад
Muttnchop Piper they are bulk house blends one is Irish Cream another is called Embassy then there's JR Vanilla. they seem to be very moist they clump together when pinched. so I pack the bowl then I empty the bowl and let the tobacco dry for 30 or so. then I repack the bowl. then I do a char light then the true light. and I slowly draw the smoke in taking a few small puffs then I swirl the smoke around my mouth and let it float around for a few seconds before exhaling.
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 7 лет назад
Kris Syxx - The moisture could be the problem, I have a video on drying tobacco, but the short version is find a flat pan, like a pizza pan, spread out the tobacco, and let it sit out in the open for 12 hours, then check it, it should feel dry to the touch, then ball some up in your hand, if it sticks together then let it dry for another 6 hours. Wet tobacco produces steam which when condenses soaks the tobacco throwing off the taste of the tobacco, so give the tobacco a good dry, before packing it. 👍👍👍
@roadkill3881
@roadkill3881 7 лет назад
Muttnchop Piper The moisture seems to be part of the problem. I dried the Embassy blend out all day like you suggested. And the flavor on the palate is a little more pronounced than before. But I still can't really notice the flavor until I smell the smoke.

what categorizes an english blend? pls
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper Год назад
Ok, a long time ago in England a law was passed that restricted tobacco blenders to only bending tobacco in it’s natural state, no additives permitted unless it was for the use as a preservative basically sugar water. So a true English has only pure tobacco in its natural form, Latakia, Perique, Virginia, Etc. Now there is also another kind of English called American English where the restrictions of true English are not followed, so in an American English you can add cherry additives, or vanilla, caramel, and so on.

Do airomatics burn diffrent from English?
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 лет назад
vaping Gardner - some do, but as a rule no, you don’t have to do anything different when you smoke an Aromatic or an English blend. There is one Aromatic that pops like pop rocks when you smoke it, startled me at first but I was warned it would happen, it’s called Molte Dolce. 👍👍👍

I do not sub to this channel but I visit it from time to time. Can anyone tell me why an English is called an English just because it has latakia and black cavendish in it? English pipe tobaccos are suppose to have no flavorings added what so ever. Latakia is an aromatic due to the process that makes it what it is. Black cavendish is also a sugary-vanilla aromatic. Neither of these tobaccos sprout out of the ground to be what they are.
