Been 7 years! How time flies when you don't notice. Hope you're enjoying it my friend! (More like teacher). Turning 21 in two weeks, just ordered a pipe and some Independence Day pipe tobacco. Can't wait to cellar it and smoke every 4th and see the difference!

Good idea! Fellow newbie here, been enjoying tobacco for a long time. But I just recently finally got myself a real pipe. Truly a vast rabbithole just like most things you can nerd out on :).

Hi, just looking for some advice on a plan I've formed. I was a hand-rolled tobacco cigarette smoker for 15 years until I gave it up at 30 years old - 13 years ago. However, I've always wanted to smoke a pipe and have started in on a 5 year plan. I've bought a tri tool, lighters and have started buying pipes. I'm looking to buy 5 pipes for English blends and 5 for aromatics with a view to joining the pipe smoking fraternity in about 5 years. I'm going to start buying, and cellaring, tobaccos over the next few months so that I have a matured stock when I set out. I will then started learn the basics with a shop-bought, aged tin tobacco and, when I've mastered the basics, move onto enjoying my cellared stock. Does this sound like a reasonable plan?

With a great dane spread out on a siberian tiger rug and a small nearby liquor cart serving vintage brandy. Rows of leather bound books leading up to the vaulted ceiling where prized mounted animal heads share a space with priceless works of art and hand woven third era tapestries. A blank journal poised for recording my personal memoirs, and a competent multi-lingual assistant within earshot in case my nostalgic musings bring me to cancel my dinner with the Prussian ambassador.

Good advice. I find leaving it in the tin and then putting that in a large, New Air fridge-like humidor works great, or you can Mason-Jar them with a Bovida Xikar gel pack.

I purchase a 12 pack of mason jars and order 12-1 oz bulk tobacco. If you want pint jars it works the same just buy more. Put the jars back in the original box write the date and tape it shut. They stack very well in my closet. If you’re gonna jar them might as well buy bulk for a quarter of the price.

My son has some tobacco from Henry Fords office that was discarded when they evacuated his office after his death. My family is from Dearborn, MI and has worked at Ford or closely with those that worked directly with Henry. There is no proof to trace it to Ford, but it is definitely from his office. It is a portion from a bulk batch.

I have English and Virginia blends that have been sitting in mason jars in my fruit cellar for six years. The English always turn out fine but the Virginias really sing. Of course, English blends don’t need to be aged that long but I found that it doesn’t hurt them.

May this is a stupid question, but how do you prevent mold/mould do to the moisture of the tobacco? Or does tobacco not get any mold because of the nicotine? Otherwise one should regularly open the jars and let some air in. Any recommendations?

I thank you verry much for this informative video, and for all of your other videos to! I am a beginner pipesmoker and i am interrested of cellaring wich i will begin do in a small scale. What i wonder is what you have to pay for a 50g or a 100g tin of pipetobacco in the states? Here in Sweden i pay 270 swedish Kronor = 27$ american for a 50g tin of Peterson Connoisseur`s Choice. Wich is quite expensive because of the high taxes we have on tobacco. Luckily i live close to Denmark where the tobacco prices are much lower and i plan on buying most of my tobacco there. Would love to hear from others who read this what you pay for your tobacco where you are from. Thank you!
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 5 лет назад
Dörty Dennis - It depends on the blend, but you’re not going to like what I’m about to tell you, anywhere from $5.00 to $12.00 U.S. you can get some bulk blends for $2.50 per 28 grams. 😒😒😒

When aging cigars you normally do so in a Spanish cedar humidor. The Spanish cedar helps promote aging the cigar, imparting a smoother, milder experience. Would inserting a Spanish cedar dowel be of benefit to pipe tobacco?
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 лет назад
Owen Johnson NO..... if you put that Spanish cedar dowel in with the blend it will taint the taste of the tobacco. Moisture will impregnate the wood causing it to release that moisture Into the tobacco, which in turn will cause the tobacco to take on the taste of the cedar. The tobacco in cigars is tightly wrapped, and in a controlled environment. Pipe tobacco is not. 👍👍👍

@peterjpuleo4133
@peterjpuleo4133 6 лет назад
A bit off subject, but I have a question: I have a 50 gram tin of McConnell "100% Pure Syrian Latakia" tobacco collecting dust in my cellar for about 10 years. If I want to use it to make a medium English blend, what would you suggest I should use for blending? I hate burley, but is there a Virginia, or whatever, you would recommend.? What percentages do you recommend? Thanks Muttnchop.
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 лет назад
Peter J Puleo - This is outside of my realm of expertise, I have never really created a blend from scratch, if it were me I would mix the Latakia with some Virginia, and toasted black cavendish. Virginia for the sweet hay taste, and toasted black cavendish for sweetness, make your Virginia the base, then depending on how strong you want the Latakia add that in next, then just a touch of the cavendish to add some sweetness. You will have to trial and error until you get the taste You’re looking for. I hope this helps. 👍👍👍

Hi Muttnchop Piper - have you had issues with distinguishing which tins were purchased on which date? I know that you mentioned the box method and storing that away, but I've heard of others just writing the dates on the labels. Has this been something that you've considered in the past. BTW, great videos! Thanks.
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 лет назад
TheManInTheMasks - most tins have a date they were manufactured, but some are difficult to decipher. I have written on the tin the date of manufacture, or if I can't find that, or it's to hard to figure out, I write the date on which I purchased the tin, so to answer your question... yes, and I highly recommend you do it. 👍👍👍
@TheManInTheMasks
@TheManInTheMasks 6 лет назад
Thanks! Do you have a site or guide that you use to look up the dates at? I recently was able to source 8 tins of Balkan Sobranie, 1 Pembroke, and 3 Old Gowrie's (didn't think those would be as hard to find, but they are harder than were so in the past) that I am looking to source dates for. Thanks again for your pipe wisdom.
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 лет назад
TheManInTheMasks - the dates are usually printed on the tin somewhere, if it's not, then I don't know, I have a tin of Balkan sobranie, and your right I can't find a date, so in this case I write on the tin the day I purchased it and go from there. 😏😏😏

Do some tobaccos age better than other? Is there such a thing as a tobacco that would be better in say three years, or good now but not so much later? Or perhaps some tobacco that really benefits from cellering for seven years or ten years?
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 лет назад
Ersontilly - Yes, most tobacco’s that have Virginia tobacco as a blend component. Virginia has a high sugar content, which over time will ferment and sweeten the blend, if it’s mixed with other blend components like Latakia or orientals which age well also, those two components will become smoother, as to say the tobacco will be smokier, but velvety smooth instead of sharp, the combination of smoke smooth and sweet can’t be beat. Aromatics don’t age well, but they will smooth slightly as the toppings are absorbed by the tobacco, over time. 👍👍👍

@Mike-yi9rj
@Mike-yi9rj 5 лет назад
Now my question here Mr Piper, is do you have to wait a full 5 years or can you stagger it say like 1 year 3 years and 5 years?
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 5 лет назад
Mike H. - no, that would be fine, just be aware that 5 to 7 years is when the tobacco starts being aged where the flavor starts to get good. At 1 year, probably the same as at purchase, at 3 years, you can taste a slight difference from newly purchased, at 5 years a noticeable taste profile change, and at 7 years is when most tobacco’s reach their peak. 👍👍👍

great video Mutton Chop! I have a question regarding cellaring Aromatics. I love The Virginia Cream as well, however I have read that Aros don't cellar well, is that true? will Virginia Cream get even better with some age on it? and how long? many questions as a new pipe smoker. Thanks for your time Cheers!!!
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 лет назад
Joshua Martin - typically that’s right, It’s not that they don’t Cellar well, it’s just that the taste doesn’t change much after years of age. But Virginia Cream is different, it main base tobacco is Virginia, and it does age well, so Cellar away my friend. For about a minimum of 5 Years.

@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 3 года назад
Yes, I have had tobacco tins that have a tag that is barely affixed to the bottom of the tin. If the date is stamped on the tin, then you don’t have to worry about it. This was merely a suggestion for new pipe smokers, and like I said in the video, if you have your own way of cellaring tobacco then run with it.
@donjuanthepiper7166
@donjuanthepiper7166 3 года назад
@@MuttnchopPiper also writing another date on them other than the start date of your aging process is the right way to go. Why would you write the date from 5 years later? Makes absolutely no sense but to add confusion to when it was 1st stored.

Guidelines for cellering... more like 8 minutes on how to date label a shoe box. Very low information on this one. So each container has a date that goes into a box with a 5 year date. Just put the celler date on each container and do the old fashion math. If you only buy 3 or 4 tins a year 2021 will be the wrong date for some of those or you end up with a bunch of boxes half used. Sorry.
