Thoralf just loves playing elves, he does it at every opportunity. He's genuinely happy in this video. Quirion Ranger is one of my all time favourite cards, and this match proves why!

Carl's misplay- if you want to call it a misplay, is an interesting lesson in that making the "safe" choice- manamorphose into double chatterstorm, isn't always the correct play. sometimes you gotta pray for topdeck lethal and go for it when you're facing down an opponent who is also popping off.

People forget about the alternate mode for Learn, which can often be very relevant in chatterstorm. You can opt to loot instead of pulling in a lesson. I don't think it would've mattered, but that would've been the line I'd go for in the second game. Make the red mana, plan to loot away the chatterstorm in hand and see what you get. Of course with hindsight red mana was definitely the right play.

That upset was on par with the Prismatic Black in the Standard tournament!

Well done! Thoralf had some excellent reads and timings. Carl was able to show the sheer power of the deck well. All in all, a good match!

I clicked elves because I believed. Well played, this match really showed off pauper, and it's meta defying nature.

After seeing the first game, I was all in on team chatterstorm. But whew. That was one well-piloted elfball deck.

14:33 is such a fascinating example of playing to win vs playing to stay alive. In this scenario, making two green is on average what keeps Carl alive for the longest amount of time, but that is almost a guaranteed loss for the storm deck playing against elves that are popping off. But making red is playing to win, playing to draw another mana producing spell off the top of his deck, and in my opinion, has a far higher chance of victory than just casting two chatterstorms.

You had me with the obviscated blue mana for the blast, i thought you'd made mistake.

That feeling when you go to Pauper for the slower gameplay but still run into that turn 2 storm deck win! T^T

it is an important distinction that was missed that first day of class says "when it enters, put a counter on it" as a triggered ability rather then "enters with" as a replacement effect.

What! I did not expect that twist!

So, just some clarification on the "Storm Scale". First, its not an official lost, just a fun thing MaRo does to talk about keyword abilities. Second, Storm may be a 10, but so are several other abilities, making Storm not so much the most powerful or least likely yo be reprinted mechanic, but rather, just one of several mechanics that are not going to show up often, if at all, in the future. I'd not be shocked, in all honesty, if Storm finds its way down to a 9 on the Storm Scale, or even an 8. With great design, it can (and regularly does) come back in sets, though not in anything Standard Legal since its debut. Many of the 10's on the list are straight up never coming back no matter what, like Ante, Banding, asymetrical power/toughness counters, etc. Honestly, I believe the only reason Storm is still rated higher than the likes of Epic, Attractions, negative base power or toughness, Companion, Phyrexian Mana, Dredge, Rampage, Landhome, Annihilator, etc. is because the scale is named after it and it would be a little weird to have it not take a top spot.

He had no way of knowing it, but if Carl had kept his starting 7 in game 2, he could have sniped out Thoralf's entire mana base with Gut Shot on Thoralf's second turn.

Pauper is AGAIN very satisfying. I've started on 5 Pauper EDH decks very recently, 3 of which are choose a background brews and 2 with an uncommon creature at the helm.

This match had me torn because I love watching Carl win, but I also have been waiting to watch Thoralf win with his Pauper Elves for what feels like years.

And THIS is why I put my money on the initiative deck. You have only amazing draws or you die draws with storm. But initiative, even the eh draws are still insane, because the initiative is one of the most powerful mechanics they have ever made.

I will always remember when the Pauper community was so fed up with Storm that they protested by all registering only basic lands in the weekend challenge.

Like Thorlaf said, if you can do it once you can do it twice; Chatterstorm dropped only a single game in their brackets, but with enough good luck and smart plays you can take down a god.

13:50 I would've made red green and if I don't topdeck a piece of acceleration, you can still play first day of class into chatterstorm for 6 2/2 squirrels, which is about as good as 11 1/1 squirrels.

Love that the last game finished with 1 land in play between both players 😅

The editing on this video is great. The way the cards in hand are shown and the life total placement its all great. The only thing is I don’t know what cards are being put in bottom after a mulligan. I’m always going back 10 seconds to figure out what they got rid of. If you could put a way to indicate the cards going on bottom that’d be great. Maybe highlight them with a gold boarder right before finishing mulligans? It’s just a suggestion. Great video as always!
