Go four port (CRS305-1G-4S+IN - MikroTik 4-Port SFP+ 802.3at/af Switch L5) or eight port MikroTik 9-Port Desktop Switch, 1 Gigabit Ethernet Port, 8 SFP+ 10Gbps Ports (CRS309-1G-8S+IN) and MikroTik is a great way to learn to do more faster and at cost. Here is my review of both and I use them is a mix of NAS setup / high speed direct data usage and backend tunnelings for site to site data syncs testing.
My recommendation for GBIC 10GB for both RJ-45 and SFP fiber connections. I use both.
For RJ-45 GBIC I use the FIBAY 10G-STP-T made by Netgear :www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
For Fiber SFP GBIC I use the FluxLight Brand Cisco Compatible SFP-10G-SR 10GBase-SR Optical Transceiver: www.amazon.com/FluxLight-Comp...

As newbie I find this video very explanatory for overall SFP+ and stuff

I bought a new MikroTik CRS309-1g-8S+IN a week or 2 ago I I Really like it & I just wish i had bought it sooner ..I have like 4-5 home servers & with different brand 10gb nics & different DAC Cables some Nic's are mellanox connextX 2's & some are hp 10gb nics & I Have a oem dac cable,a cisco and a Mellanox and an arista network branded Cables & Every thing is working great no issue's what so ever & it was easy to set up & get going on a peer2peer config with routerOS ! Enterprise switch But a consumer price ya cant beat it for the bang to buck! I had thought about getting some more unifi gear but decided to get microtik & i am so glad i did..but now i kinda want the mikrotik 24 port poe switch to..lol.!

Great video! I am a Linux System Engineer, though up until recently the HW has generally been out of my scope, as the company I work for is pretty siloed. I am looking at setting up 10Gbe network at home as a personal sandbox/lab for various hypervisors. I have been eyeing both of the switches you showed and I am leaning toward the 9 port. Thanks for putting the video together. One critique, try landscape mode, instead of portrait. Other than that, great overview!

Cool, glad you enjoyed it and I will look into more landscaping video mode going forward

@@leadiususa7394 Thanks bought the 8 port a and got different transceivers for testing (DAC, Fiber SR and 10Gbase-t). Got up to 10Gbe in some tests and even 4Gbe over some old Cat5 in iperf tests. Waiting on NAS and some other parts to come in. Thanks for the reply!

I'm thinking of getting 2 Mikrotik 10Gb router/switch for my home since I got 1Gb fibre internet.

Should work well. Just setup your firewall if this switch is to act as your frontline to the world.. Enjoy!

great video. helps me a lot. my crs309-1g-8s+in switch is connected to router for internet but the light is orange and runs quite slow. is POE port is not the same as ethernet port?
@leadiususa7394
@leadiususa7394 4 года назад
Yes POE or (Power over Ethernet) is a special type of Ethernet connection that requires ether a POE injector or a POE capable base switch to the POE device such as as WIFI node. Make sure you also to check my videos about how to speed up a 10 GB networks for faster transfer rates. It doesn't happen be default you have to setup the switch/s then match the switch/s with each 10 GB NIC devise you use. All 10 GB device must talk at the same speed and buffer settings. You also need to tweak out your Jumbo speeds to both 10 and 1 GB switches. Again a hit on transfer speeds. Please like my video/s if you like the content...

Would it be possible to show your configuration for the CRS?

I purchased one of these using supported SFP adapters and copper and have found it to be slower than 1gb.

You need a SFP+ 10GB GBIC instead of a SFP 1GB GBIC you have now. And they have to be on both ends (2x 10GB GBIC host to switch and should be by the same vendor. (I like the 10GB Intel SFP+ GBICs. That is why you still have a 1GB or lower connection.

@@leadiususa7394 Thanks for the reply but I have SFP 10gb all the way around. I may be new to 10gb but I've been in IT for 20 years so I'm not exactly a newb. I've tried SFP 10gb copper, SFP 10gb twinax AND SFP 10gb fiber... yes on both ends. I have found that Intel SFP server class NIC cards to be faster then something like a TRENDnet copper card. Through trial and error I have been able to obtain brief bursts of near 10gb speeds but it bounces around from 0 to a little more than 2gb and doesn't stabilize. There are plenty of recommendations on how to tweak the NIC cards for optimum speed however I have had little success thus far.

@@potterson1710 I was able to see 10Gb in a couple of tests with iperf using the 8port switch between a DAC and Fiber transceivers. I was using Mellanox ConnectX3 NICs

@@SolarityTechnology Perhaps it's a NIC compatibility issue then. I've been testing between two servers and a workstation and like I said I get an initial burst of speed that diminishes and then fluctuates all over the place. Or perhaps it's the SFP's, I don't recall off the top of my head which ones I'm using however the SFP twinax didn't perform any better. I'm certainly open to the possibility I'm missing something but this isn't exactly rocket science either. Thanks for the info.

Yea they all must be SFP+ 10 GBICs across the board to get 10 GB network speeds. not SFP 1 GB GBICs. Sorry but they are cheap on Ebay but do you research on the part models.

Wait so is this just plug in and go? And It will work just like normal internet and I’ll be able to do everything like normal? If so it’s a steal
@leadiususa7394
@leadiususa7394 3 года назад
Yes it will just work but if you want to better secure it with your own password, I would recommend that. But it is a basic switch... I had it running in about five minutes.

@@leadiususa7394 so do I make it secure with the software for it? so all I need is a switch, a cat6 cable, a pcie card for it, and that spf+ thing for the Ethernet port?
@leadiususa7394
@leadiususa7394 3 года назад
@@farrenz3333 You need a Spf+ for each port that is either fiber or RJ-45. You need CAT 6 10GB rated cabling if you go RJ-45, or fiber if your do Spf+ links. The software you are referring to is built into the switch. You don't have to buy anything. It will have default user and Password that you need to change but that is about it. You can do more if you like but not needed... Maybe later... /;> Enjoy!
