Welcome to the GeeKam K3r 4K Action camera review!
Geekam is another action cam brand that we can see slowly getting popular. The main strength of the K3R is the price - 40USD! Which is quite unbelievable. Of course, if you are in a region different to USA, the price may be in EUR or GBP, but the cam remains quite cheap compared to almost anything that is good for shooting at 1080p.
From the many accessories - three highlights:
- a mini tripod
- remote controller
- two batteries with charger. Model of the batteries is PG1050, which are suitable for many current actioncam models. And support almost all Eken cameras. Coincidence? Not really ;)
Build quality is good for that price range - all plastic body, with a good, well visible in daylight display, clicky buttons. And overall - good and fluid menu. On the front there’s a secondary display with status about shooting mode, resolution info and battery level.
Inside the device there’s a good Panasonic sensor, and the image is processed by Sunplus 6350, well known for its moderate performance. The combo makes a good job faking 4k and 2.5k. On a smaller screen you may not notice a difference, so let me show you a zoomed in sample. Notice the right hand side of the screen where we have the so called 4K. the compression is not h.264, it is M-JPEG or motionjpeg - which is far worse than h.264 encoding because of the noise and artifacts that become visible. This is not a reason to worry about, as there are many more expensive cameras using the same chipset.
The functionality of the camera is somewhat limited - no timelapse video; there only is timelapse photo option - not terrible, but requires some post processing for getting a video out of it. Resolution control is easy. Not much of slow mo - we have 60fps on fullHD that lets you slow down 2 times if the clip you produce is 30fps, and there also is 720 p which looks rather bad for 2018. If you watch it from a smartphone - the quality looks to be a bit more acceptable. Displayed on a 4K monitor you’d prefer to watch something else. No car mode, no raw photos, no color presets. There is Wi-Fi though
The battery life was sort of alright. Nothing extremely great, and around 40-50 minutes of shooting and playback are achievable. Non-stop recording with the screen off in FHD will record for around 60 minutes.
Shooting side by side with this year’s 1080p champion FireFly 8SE - we will notice where the difference of 100 dollars, but the K3R model still remains very attractive.
The three main strengths - price - way above everything else. The full HD recording - which is way better than 4K and 2.5k in terms of sharpness and detail, and the many accessories included, even a second battery and a tripod.
The three main weaknesses - lack of true 4K support - and we cannot blame such a cheap camera for that too much, lack of timelapse video, and no EIS.
At 40 dollars - there is nothing that is even close to that model.
