Will it work on cars? PicoScope 2204A Automotive Oscilloscope review - The PicoScope 2204A might just be a great alternative cheap automotive oscilloscope. In this video we review the Pico 2204A scope and test whether the PicosScope 2204A is suitable for automotive oscilloscope diagnostics. Comapred to the PicoScope Automotive kit which starts at £600 for a basic kit and £1500 for a standard kit, the PicoScope 2204A can be bought for as little as £120 (link below)! Hantek also make a competitor for an automotive oscilloscope, the Hantek 6022be.
In this video we perform some typical automotive oscilloscope diagnostics using the PicoScope 2204A and put it to the ultimate test of checking the CAB Bus fault diagnostics.
Note: the maximum input voltage for the PicoScope 2204A is 20 volts. If you want to measure modern direct injection petrol or diesel injectors, you will need a 20:1 attenuator; this reduces the input voltage by a factor of 20 (link below!)

Thank you. I just ordered one, along with an Xtool Anyscan 30. I already downloaded Pico Scope 7, so I'm going to be using these for practice only. Currently I'm a Marine electrician who also worked as a Nuclear instrumentation technician (Nuclear electronic (technician), copy machine technician and EV technician on transit buses therefore, I sincerely believe I can transfer my experience to the automotive field since I'm fascinated with the current technology involved therein.

Darren, Thank you for this and all of your other videos. You do an excellent job of making some rather intimidating subject matter easily understandable. It was this particular video that convinced me to purchase a 2205A. I had been TRYING to use a Hantek 2D82Auto handheld. It was far too fussy and getting the settings right was a real pain. The Pico software is a breeze and I was able to put it to good use to identify failed and failing injectors on my 1990 Cadillac DeVille. I also used it to find a failed coil and fix the misfire on my 2006 Ford F150, which took about 10 minutes from boot-up to problem identified. The Pico is an excellent piece of kit and I wouldn't dream of not using it now. Cheers!

Awesome video.i stubbled across your video while working on a canbus issue today at work. I got the truck fix fixed. We don't have a scope and I keep asking for one .... I was looking at this scope couple of months ago to purchase it myself.i asked this pico dealer in my area about this scope and he said you can't use it for automotive ...... You need the" Grand master deluxe 10000 automotive kit "for 3,000 Candian dollars ... And left it there. I went down the Google rabbit hole about this scope for automotive with no luck so I give up. Until I found this video and I purchased everything in the link. came out for $300 Canadian. Can't wait to use this and learn, so I am not just a brake and ball joint Mechanic. Awesome content keep up the good work . 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

This is music to my ears! The 2204A does have some limits (which I try to highlight where I can), but absolutely amazing scope for the money and a great starting point! Once you get used the to the 2204A and learn the ways of the scope, you will learn the areas it is weaker. You can then make the decision if you want to upgrade or make do with the 2204A. That way you will understand why you are paying more money for the higher spec kit (it is good). I will do a video on my opinion about the 2 soon. Stay tuned for more! Thanks 👍

Hey man, Wish you luck. I've got a question for you, assuming you have bought the pico 2204a, I'd like to know your thoughts about it as a mechanic. I'm currently looking to buy a scope for automotive use but am a bit lost and not sure if i should get the 2204a or a liitle more expensive picoscope. Thanks in advance, any feedback is appreciated :)

@@martinsubally899 honestly speaking as a licensed tech who works on every thing from car to HD trucks. That little pico scope is pretty good, it has it limits and I like to use it with the hacked automotive software because it sets it up for you for whatever your testing. It just a tool at the end of day and makes you different from all the gravy techs just doing brakes and ball joints. But I mostly use it for can bus errors. I am the only tech I know that uses a scope lol. If you have a laptop already its not to bad to get all the stuff. I still use the dlc breakout box and a power probe and mulit meter everyday as my bread and butter. For the money this scope is a good start with out spending a arm and leg and a step making you a better technician. Good luck hope this helped

The vantage pro also needs a new battery which is about £150 I believe . I think with the help of your videos and the pico website I may purchase the 2204a as it seems more user friendly to me. Hi, so is this Picoscope better than the Hantek oscilloscopes? Also by removing the OEM dll, would the Hantek work with the pico automotive software?

Hi! I haven’t used the 1008C but understand it has some limitations like the sample rate is quite low. Also the Hantek software isn’t great. But you can get HScope on any android device really cheap. Many thanks 😊

Hantek probe is single bnc to dual banana, how do you connect to pico? Using only one channel?
@MechanicMindset
@MechanicMindset 4 года назад
Hi Husain, the Hantek Auto probe is very similar to the Pico Auto probe. The BNC end has a ground (the metal casing of the BNC connector) and 'positive' conection (the pin in the middle of the BNC). The Red banana connects to the middle pin, the black banana connects to the ground. This is the standard for most scopes like this.

Yes PICO is Great and works.... you can add the Auto probes and import settings from the Automotive one brilliant ! as to ANYTHING HANTEK SCOPE wise after experiencing the Hantek 1008C or "Hantoy" I refer to it as is only good for a door stop when it is effected by High voltage noise in the work area - so basically totally USELESS when it comes to Automotive DIS Secondary ignition work - it locks up, reboots even crashes the attached PC. The attached HT-25 ignition lead actually works with real scopes like a PICO. Dam CCP China and their 'pretend' time wasting non functional products. Save up and buy proper western brand ones that actually DO work !
@MechanicMindset

Haha, I much prefer the 2204A for a budget scope. Some people seem to get on ok with Hantek products. I have the 622be, which is ok for the price point (get what you pay for) The specs on the 1008 don't look great and I hear that loading up the 8 channels really affects the performance! I do have the HT-25, I should do a video! Cheers
@ausmartin1
@ausmartin1 3 года назад
@@MechanicMindsetI have since sort of put the Hantek back on life support after finding the supplied budget non USB standard cable with no earth connector shielding was acting like some crazed antenna... also added mui metal to the inside of the plastic case and shield the optional output terminal block with a grounded cover .... That leaves only the interesting Hantek software to cope with and some temperature drift over time. I think the problems with Hantek is they don't use their products after the initial designs first build unlike most western companies who go back & modify till they perfect it for use. Take the CC65 Hantek clamp... zero button gets stuck, the cable at exit can get strained broken. The CC650 they fixed the zero button in similar case design. Honestly face palm moments with Hantek making the same flawed products year in year out... why change??? Look forward to your clamp video.
