Cheap Black & Decker Battery Hack!!!

Modified a dead Black N Decker 18v single source battery pack, to take the cell pack from a Harbor Freight 18v battery. I got the idea when I went shopping for a replacement battery for my cordless pole saw, and was shocked at the $40 price tag. I remembered that Harbor Freight had an 18v drill and looked up on the internet if anyone has done this before. Of course It has been done, the HF battery is only like $12. This video will show you what I had to do to get my battery converted. You will need a soldering iron, solder, Philips screw driver and T10 torx and a pair of cutters. This was not a hard thing to do and took around 10 minutes but saved $30. Hope this video helps others with their aging Black &Decker tools.

Making use of the ru-vid.comUgkxcJ22tnHH9l1vjdIdEIG27iOG55P7LXI8 reconditioning plan, I just saved 2 auto batteries from being completely junked. The guides were very simple to follow. I wish I would have found this years ago! You may use the guide to recondition any battery type

Great idea and great job presenting it! I definitely want to try this -- We have B&D Alligator lopers, leaf blower, weed wacker, hedge trimmer, etc and those 18V batteries are the weak link. I got so frustrated I made an adapter to use my DeWalt 20V batteries for these and I didn't see your video until I posted my video last night!! Can't wait to try this - Great Job and Thanks for Sharing!

Thanks. I have 4 B&D tools and 6 batteries all dead. I've watched many rebuild videos and was about to buy a box of NiCad cells from china, and some nickel strips and start building new battery packs from scratch. Not now, I'm off to harbor freight !!!! this will be a much better solution, thanks again

Thanks for the information! Before seeing this video (over a month ago) I purchased two lithium ion 18 volt replacement batteries for the Black & Decker Firestorm tools. They were $39.99 a piece. I was happy to do it because my old batteries are nickel cadmium. I may have missed it, but are the Harbor Freight batteries Lithium Ion or Nickel Cadmium? If they are Lithium Ion, I'll give this hack a try on my weakest of the original Nickel Cadmium Batteries.

i used old labtop batteries to replace my old nickle batteries and it works great and i dont use a BMS and it still works great and ive used it plent of times so yeah lthium ion batteris is they way to go

Just my two cents: Place a short piece of 600 volt electricians tape between the battery cells and the exposed ends of the connecting prongs.

Not a bad idea, it had a piece of cardboard as an insulator over the cells. But more is always better .

Thanks for posting this video... I have a 24volt Black n Decker which has a dead power pack... Will give this a try, if either Harbor Freight carries this size battery

Be sure the screw that holds the tip is tight. use smaller diameter solder, and get some on the tip of the iron to there it is about to drip off. Touch the tip to where you intend to solder so the solder drop will help transfer heat.

Matt do you or any viewers have a solution to replacing or finding a substitute for the Ryobi 24v Lion battery that was discontinued. I still have a barely used weed eater and edger that uses that battery?

No I don't unfortunately. The only thing I can think of is to search the # on the battery on Google. You may find an aftermarket battery, it just might cost full price.

I've done this but it's better to buy the upgraded HF battery for a little more amp hours. Pretty simple, cheap fix. Yes, you just use your existing B&D charger.

The upgraded battery is a better value for sure, I'm just to cheap to spend the few extra dollars LOL. Thanks for the commit it will help others get there tools back to work.

You have lovely hands! Just kidding. It''s a pain to make these videos and you need to do like 3 practice runs to get the camera to show what you are actually doing; but your precise articulation made up for the camera angles. Great informative and "get it done" video and attitude! I'll bet your tool there will work on one of those 20 V batteries.

How's it holding up? I presume the harbor freight battery is lower quality and will die out faster so I'm curious as to how it has fared.

so far it's good, I do not use it very often but it always takes a charge. The HF battery is a little smaller on MH which makes a small difference in run time.

you can buy a adapter that changes it from nicad to lithium on ebay then you can buy a new tool you like that comes with a battery and charger and continue to use your old tools and expand into the new lithium tools

I just bought a B and D 36 volt mower at s garage sale...the batteries aren't the greatest.....any way to rejuvenate them?

I'm not sure, check Amazon and see if they sell a knock off battery. I don't think back&decker sells that batter any more.

It does not matter if the pack is so dead that you cant find the polarity with a meter, you can tell the positive and negative of each individual cell in the pack by looking at them. just take the pack apart and find the first and last cells in the series and see which goes to which terminal on the connector you can identify which terminal is which.

That's only if the terminals are actually marked with polarity. I haven't seen many that do.

@@joewoodchuck3824 my comment was about the video poster not being able to find the polarity of the packs contacts, to find that out without a reading from a meter on a NiMH pack is easy from looking at the cell configuration inside. I know some packs are lipo these days but it should still be obvious looking at the configuration of the cells but nearly all lithium based packs use 18650 cells which polarity is easily identified just from looking at the cell.

reasons is they may be safe for use in items but lithium ion is something we should not play with. That is a big reason manufactures don't want people taking batteries apart. Also if you become hurt the government can fine the company for products not safety standard met.They already payed a 1.6 million dollar penalty fine for not reporting things doubt they wanna pay another at black and decker. Ill be honest these batteries are not very safe but safer then others

One problem I noticed with mine was that the charger never got the cells to 1.5 volts for the pack. Only to 1.3 float voltage. Your chargers may be the culprit. Also the DUAL chargers? Only try to charge one cell at a time and see if that works.

How do you perform a recharge with the modifications? Still use original charger from B&D?

Yes I used the B&D charger, after the modifications it is just a different battery in the B&D case.

You can look on Amazon for a direct replacement. But if you want to do the conversion, I got the battery at Harbor freight.

@@MattLundquistVW great to see your video as I was looking for one on individual cell replacement (if I can find them) We acnnot get harbor freight in UK, and the cheap Amazon (unknown quality) A18 cost over £20 = 28USD. If only I could find HF equivalent here.

@@MattLundquistVWI checked around the price on 18650 and it costs around $5 per battery at least. So it would cost at least $40 or more to replace all 8 cells. It would also cost you 40 to buy a brand new one. So I do not see any benefit here unless you got better price for batteries

I did not replace each cell. I replaced the whole pack. The battery pack was around $12 us at the time I made this video.

dammit, I threw mine away and I have 2 black and decker weed Wackers, a hedge trimmer, and leaf blower. wish I would have seen this. I'm trying to find a hack to run these off ac or dc with a plug in dc converter, like the battery charger or something

Leesherwood was just easier to check the battery. The charger is not marked either on my setup.

Al Ingram that is exactly what I did. The Harbor freight battery case is different than the Black & Decker, so you have to swap the battery cells from case to case like I did. Hope this helps clear up any confusion.

Black and Decker and Dewalt have a much higher mAh, which makes a huge difference. Those Harbor Freight batteries give you 1300 mAh which is about half the time before discharge of a Dewalt battery which gives you 2400 mAh. And those batteries will not deliver the power you can wield with a Dewalt or a B&D battery. You get what you pay for.

Yes the HF battery has less mAh, but this battery is for a pole saw that I only use a few times a year. It's hard to justify the extra cost of the original battery when you maybe use a tool three times a year. When the battery goes dead and needs to go on the charger, I have to clean up all the tree debris anyways. so it works out in my case.

You have a point. I have been down this road myself and I was just passing on the knowledge. The way to solve this problem of worn out batteries, which cannot be resuscitated with sparking, is to use Tenergy cells rated at 3.0 mAh and solder them in the shape of the original battery. And you can replace only the bad cells, to save money. Otherwise it costs nearly $40 to replace them all...

Ok, but how about comparative run time? Also, there are 18650's and there are other 18650's. Actually AH capacities among sources vary quite a bit, and that's before considering outlandish claims. Just sayin'.
