Cheap, Dirty Deeds are the BEST! Vocal Analysis of more AC/DC!

We started my AC/DC journey with "Thunderstruck" and Brian Johnson's smokey vocals. Immediately, I was informed that I should have started with Bon Scott and I understand now. His charisma and stylization are so intriguing, so much so that I decided to jump into another one of his classics, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to AC/DC performing "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" for the first time.

I love the way Bon Scott wrote lyrics and interpreted them live. The smugness with which he describes how he hits on women and often loses them is taken from life. But also what he sings about here. There are moments in life when you wish you had someone to solve as problems for you. That there is that one person who will make all the shit in your life disappear into thin air. And he sings it with a wit and charm that makes me want to hire him to solve my problems. And that's exactly what makes Bon Scott the best singer in AC/DC for me. His sense of humour, his realistic view of life and its depths is simply brilliant. He looked at everything with his special humour and reflected that in his lyrics. That's exactly what I love him for. He speaks to me from the heart.

So my grandpa was an auctioneer who ran an auction once a month. Since it was his auction and my parents helped run it, I could get my pick of things that I wanted and he’d make a deal for it before it ever actually went to auction. I got giant box of cassette tapes and this tape was in that box. I wouldn’t have picked it apart from any of the others except for my dad going through the box with me so he pulled it saying he loved that album. I was maybe 4 or 5 when I started listening to it and it joined into the rotation of classic rock music that we would listen to all the time while I was growing up. So I’ve been listening to this album in particular for about 30 years now and it still induces just as much fun and mischievousness when I hear it as it did when I was a kid. Can’t listen to these classics without smiling and singing along. Funny note to go along with that story, I got written up, sent to the principal’s office, and had my parents called because I was singing Big Balls in the first grade. That was the second time I got in trouble for singing inappropriate songs in school. The first time was in Kindergarten for singing a song, Sweet Transvestite, from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. So that kinda tells you how I was brought up as a kid😂 I think I turned out alright though, all things considered😉

Elizabeth, great to see you're really enjoying the majesty of Bon Scott era AC/DC, Brian has an amazing voice, but there's just something about Bon and his unique lyric and vocal style, unlike anyone else, and the way he always sounds and looks like he's having so much fun, a born entertainer taken too soon

Loving the love for "Ride On" here. One of those songs that makes me just close my eyes and feel all tension wash away as the song plays. One of my all time favourites and showed a different side of BS

Baby Please Don't Go. This i think is AC DC's only cover released on an album. It's a must watch if you find the countdown clip on RU-vid. They covered other songs live. Bon Scott's entrance alone is priceless as the rest of the band were unaware of what he was going to do. Check it out priceless.

Ride On, my fav song by ACDC and Bon. Very bluesy song. I adore Bon, he was just having fun and so did his audience.

The mentioning of "High Voltage" as assassination method is an internal reference to the title of AC/DCs debut album.

This song title was based on a Australian cartoon show from the 70's, the lead character ( I think it was a cat) carried around a business card that said Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Something like that !

always felt Bon Scott sung sort of similarly to how Aussies would tell each other tall stories after a few beers at the pub. Something about the way he used cadence. It was like a sung version of just having a joke with your mates.... where we would also joke about the misfortunes of others and/or how we could bring about that misfortune

What a reaction! I love it when you can have so much fun - even more than usual here - with a vocal analysis. ❤ "Rock 'n' Roll Singer" should perhaps be your next Bon Scott reaction, but whatever you pick next will be fine ofc. R.I.P. Bon.

The audience singalong aspect is a result of AC/DC growing out of Australian pub rock where the band is close up with the audience and interaction is strong. I remember playing cassettes of AC/DC full blast on country roads in Queensland. This is before anyone overseas had heard of them. They had a huge and enthusiastic following long before the first international release of any of their albums. So much of the attraction of the early AC/DC was Bon Scott's genius and willingness to do anything. I remember when they were playing at The Kirk in Cleveland Street, near here, he jumped from the upper floor organ level onto the ground floor while singing and broke his leg doing it. Yes, they finished the song. Bon Scott is amazing.

Elizabeth, your delight here is so infectious! I just thought of this right now: What could/would you -- a trained, experienced opera singer and master vocalist -- do with a rock song cover or set list? What would or could you, Elizabeth, bring to a mixing board or concert hall? I'd **LOVE** to see it, and I bet I am not alone in this! I bet you'd be amazing!

The comment on how to resolve conflict gives me a funny mental image of Elizabeth at her D&D table chastising the other players for wanting to enter combat with the villains.

Back to thar guitar solo, one of the most enjoyable aspects of AC/DC is the clean separation of rhythm and lead guitars, more distinctive than most other bands. As a rhythm guitarist in the early 80's it made learning their music so much fun

One of the things we used to talk about in the Marine Corps and rifleman skills is, you have to learn all the proper shooting stances and breath control and all of that because it gives you the foundation to shatter those rules when you're in combat and you can't take up those stances, you know where you should be to shoot accurately so you know the ways to bend and break those rules and still stay effective. Something I thought of when listening to you talking about what you'd have to do to sing like Bon Scott. Love his singing and would love to hear more reactions to AC/DC from you. Highway to Hell is great, For Those About to Rock, oh and if you want to continue the tongue in cheek sauciness Whole Lotta Rosie is amazing XD Bon Scotts stuff you should do some live stuff too, he was great live.

According to the AC/DC Wiki, Dirty Deeds 'is inspired by a cartoon guitarist Angus Young watched as a child, Beany and Cecil, in which the villain, Dishonest John, had a business card that read "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Holidays, Sundays, and Special Rates"'.

The name of the song is a shout out to Dishonest John, the bad guy in the Cecil and Beanie Boy cartoons from the 60.s. He had "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" on his business card. And now you know the rest of the story!

The deeper chorus is from Malcom Young; the lead guitarists older brother. He did the breathing and does all of the "grungy" type of voicing.
