Thank you Jamerrill for sharing like you do. I can't have animals where I live, but you have inspired me to do a garden this year, and stuff actually has grown! And I also have started canning and long term food storage in mylar bags with buckets too. So thank you for sharing like you do and for being so inspirational and for always keeping it real ❤️🤗 My favorite quote from you...you do you and I will do me....love it...and love you lady ❤️ Thank you again ❤️

You can make your own oxygen obsorbers by buying silican kitty litter and using coffee filters to incase the silican . This will lower your costs dramtically for O2 OBSORBERS.I havent made them yet because I just watched the video

Just a thought, when you store the buckets, if you aren't using a shelve but are stacking them, you will need to use a board between the buckets. If you stack several heavy buckets on top of each other, the lids will eventually break, but if you place a board on top of a bucket and set the bucket on top of the board, it redistributes the weight from the thin lid to the sturdier bucket.

You may need to rethink that young lady. When my mom was 81 she still had 19 years that she had to eat, and she cooked and cleaned in her own house every day. These days I don’t know if that’s good news or bad news. Here’s wishing you many more happy and healthy years. 😊❤️🙏

Just remember Claudia that I always invest in help for myself. There is no way I do everything 100% on my own (although I do a lot 😆). In my business I now have about nine people who work for me in various ways. And my husband has been home full-time since 2013, and he helps me every day. So even though you see me, there’s always lots of teamwork going on behind the scenes. ❤️

You need to write the type of pasta on the label, like lasagnas, because you might need spaghetti and open a bucket with lasagna noodles. Some of the others are interchangeable but sometimes you just want a particular type noodle. Just a suggestion

Just a tip: You can always use rubbing(isopropyl) alcohol to take off permanent markers from plastic. I store broth in plastic liter containers and freeze them with written info (date and content) on the lid. Then when I use it up, I wash them and take an alcohol swab and wipe the lids clean.
@biteskins

Millet is another grain you can actually live on for a long time - very healthy grain - I prefer it already hulled and cook it the same way I do oatmeal - with milk/water. I put a little honey, butter and chopped dried fruits on top after it's cooked. I found a giant bag of it at our local discount store similar to your Sharp Shopper - GTM (San Diego). I invested in a Harvest Right freeze drier a couple years ago and built up a good emergency food stash. I love being able to buy a case of name brand yogurt at GTM for $2.40. You can freeze dry that into little drop or wafer shapes. Great snack. Freeze dried watermelon is amazing stuff - comes out like cotton candy. Most fruits are fantastic freeze dried. Freeze dried ice cream sandwiches are amazing.

I would go ahead and get a TON of pasta sauce! If things go south before you are finished getting all your supplies you would have sauce to make a meal. I also make meal buckets that include full meals (ex. canned hamburger, pasta sauce, pasta, can of green beans, spices or condiments) In an emergency that causes you to leave your home you could just grab those instead of trying to get individual items. They can also be used to share. If a family came to you for food you could just give them a prepared bucket and it would have everything they need.

Better yet... Instead of buying a ton of sauce which might spoil before you use it, just buy tomato powder and dehydrated veggies to make your own sauce. Then, you'll still have it available 10 to 20 years from now. AND... it is much lighter to transport and won't take up nearly as much space in bulky jars.

Another two items I freeze are chocolate chip morsels. Also shelled walnuts and pecans. I buy large bags so keep them in the freezer. Nuts don't turn rancid and morsels don't melt if it gets hot. You can take out enough for a recipe and put rest right back in freezer. Thaw them at room temperature.

Add an assortment to large mylar with O2 absorber and put in bucket. Box pasta salad mixes can be done the same way. Another I put up is Instant mashed potatoes, box mac and cheese, dry gravy mixes, pankcake/waffle mix/muffin mix... I could list a ton more.

You can leave the pasta in the original bags inside the mylar. Just cut the corner off of the top of the original bag so the air can suck out. Then stick the bags in there in such a way that the open corners are not blocked. That way you have an extra layer of material to protect your mylar.

Jamerill, several things I would like to mention: 1) you can make your own brown sugar with just white sugar and molasses, easier!, 2) you can make your own powdered sugar by blending your regular sugar in a blender til fine. That is two things you don't have to worry about. , 3) very important to know how to use your wheat! That is a whole 'nother ball game. I am assuming you have white wheat (which tastes very different from red wheat, which is what I have). It will last almost forever in your storage and there are a lot of things you can make with it. One book that is easy to use and I recommend is by Crystal Godfrey called I can't believe it's food storage. She also has a blog and makes wonderful bread with her whole wheat kernels. There are, of course, many more resources but hers are very easy. Enjoy your journey!

This new method answers a couple of questions I had. The straightener both allows for a smoother seal, preventing any small channels of potential air leaks, and sealing the end allows for opening an resealing/reuse. I'd say, unless told otherwise, it's a great option.

That you can open small slits vs cutting tops off. Hold bag around hose tube otherwise you may need 2 -100 absorbers with all that air by volume

Great vid! Just a note…you could leave your pasta in the plastic bags..if u wanted to cut the top to open it to allow the oxygen absorber to do it job, that’s ok too. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this or not but I used to work for a fast food chain and they get their dill pickles in 5 gallon buckets which are usually thrown away when empty. I had permission from my manager to take the empties home for free and used them for various purposes. Perhaps that is an option to be looked into by you or some of your viewers with the surrounding restaurants in your area. Never hurts to ask. You would have to clean them well to get the pickle smell out but hey, free buckets ya know? Hope this is helpful.

Many people, probably most people, do not have the resources to buy this quantity of food and the bags, buckets, and oxygen absorbers to put them in. There is also the matter of storage space to consider. I know you have said to do it on whatever scale you can. Good advice, but many of us are on strict budgets these days.

I hear you, that’s why I’ve been buying an extra $16 bag of 25 pound oats or these $5.99/10 lb bags of noodles here and there. I broke down the math on doing these buckets to less than $15 per bucket including the bucket, mylar, oxygen absorbers, and FOOD etc. that compared to buying $150 Bucket (that all sold out this spring quickly) is substantially cheaper. You can make the buckets even cheaper by looking for your own local resources and getting free buckets from delis, restaurants, bakeries, and fast food locations. Several in the comments have shared that’s how they have gotten free buckets. I have friends on very frugal and limited budgets who are adding to their food storage successfully. It is not impossible, so be encouraged ❤️

If you don't want to write a permanent note on the tub, if you plan to cycle through it, you can use adhesive index holders like binders have. Then you can pull the note out and replace it. I'd assume you want to start going through one at a time until you replace each one.

If you are going to be doing any canning from your garden you may have to look far and wide for canning flats. I have rings and jars I use every year but have to search for flats. They are out every where.

You don’t need to put the sugar in Mylar save the bag for other food. In a good grade bucket with a gamma lid is sufficient. Make sure your food storage that is stored in the basement isn’t on cement it can cause the buckets to sweat and food to go bad. You can put it on a pallet or such. Great work!

Check out some of the prepping channels here on yt. They can tell you what is good for long term food storage and make suggestions. Do a search on here with food storage/long term food storage. There is lot of things you can store. The main thing to remember when doing prepping with food is only store the things you know your family will eat. I buy things ocsasionally that I have never cooked/ate to try out. If I like it I start adding it to my preps. That might be something you want to try out too.

I've been storing food in buckets for at least 10 years. If you're planning on actually keeping it for 20+ years, keep on keepin on. If though, you plan on rotating through your food within a year or two, you can skip the mylar and oxygen absorbers. The benefit to skipping the mylar is that you can fit a lot more food into your bucket. I keep my pasta in the original packaging and just put a date on the package. When it goes on sale for 70-some cents per pound I stock up a lot. I don't put it in a bucket, but you totally can if you're worried about rodents or weevils or whatever. Granulated sugar I just dump in the bucket and refill my kitchen container from the bucket as needed. Brown and powdered sugar I usually leave in their original bag with the date on it and squeeze as many as possible into a bucket and remove one bag at a time as needed in the kitchen. Rice and wheat store just fine in the bucket. I just dump them from their original bulk packaging into the bucket. Milk powder stores fine just dumped into the bucket for my purposes, but if I used mylar I might consider doing it for powdered milk. It doesn't stay as fresh as long as other things. I have my salt in the original 25 pound bag just dropped into a bucket. Oats can be finicky. You want to make sure you're rotating them yearly or you could have moisture issues. This is another that I would do in mylar if I used it. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Gamma lids are amazing. I highly recommend them. One last thought: consider your climate. It might be best to store all your stuff the way you're doing it because Virginia is a lot more humid than the west side of the country where I've lived ever since leaving my beautiful Virginia behind in 2005. I'd maybe try one bucket of each food without mylar and watch it each month over the course of a year or so and then decide if you actually need to go to the added expense and time of mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. I really appreciate all the things I've learned over the past several months from you. I hope the info I've shared is as helpful. 🙂

Hey just learned that any wrinkles in the Mylar seal can reduce storage abilities by 95%. I haven’t done anything like this but I’m reading up on it. I’m not sure I’m up for all of that but I just saw your seals in the video and thought to share this. Might want to look into that...awesome video and great job!!!!

Yeah, I brought up the hair straightener in the first buckets you did💕 Lot of comments though. I've have yeast in my freezer that is in the Costco vacuum bricks you can get that expired in 2013, unopened . Once I open the brick, I put some in a container and keep it in the fridge then put the rest in canning jars and put it back in the freezer. It's still good. I'm using it now. It's surprising how long it's good. Those hair straighteners are the thing to use 😊

Use a grease pencil to write on the buckets. Use goo gone or orange cleaner to remove the writing when it is time to refill the buckets. Remove goo gone residue with rubbing alcohol and then write on the bucket again with grease pencil. I have been rotating the same buckets for at least a decade. That painters tape will not stay on. Ask me how I know!

Love the video. Only thing I would recommend is to lift up the bag and shake it a little to push a little more air out. I'm sure what you did is fine, but I'm OCD like that. Keep up the good work.

Have you looked into foodsaver food storage and longevity to slow spoilage? Plus other similar products. My dad had such a product that I remember using until he lost the equipment by not paying our storage units. It helps speed up air removal and sealing. They have both bags and containers. So you pick based on what will be stored and where.

you also have to factor the long-term cost of the food. In 20 years, the pasta will cost whatever it costs. i've read that a freeze-dryer pays for itself, too, rather than an extra freezer, because you only turn it on a couple days at a time, where as the freezer runs 24/7/365.

I'm also reminded that you can get pure silica gel from Hobby Lobby in huge cannisters to preserve fresh flowers with. Use coffee filters for packets that have the silica gel folded up and stapled shut like tea bags. Put warning "Do not eat" on packets...

Hi. Thank you for your very informative and pleasant video. It was very helpful seeing you walking through all the steps of your 5 gal bucket food storage routine. As I was watching you push out air from each 5 gal mylar bag during the last step, just before you sealed it's last two inches, I kept noticing that a tiny bit of air reentered each bag before you were able to finish sealing it closed. So I started wondering how I could keep as much oxygen out of each bag, before I sealed its last 2 inches. Here's the idea I came up with. You know how you prepared all your bags, as much as you could, before going onto the last step of pushing out as much air as possible from each bag, before popping an oxygen absorber it, then while a little bit of air entered back into the bag, you finished sealing it up? Well, what if when you go through your pre-pepping of each bag of food, part of this staging was to, just after you seal all but the last two inches, squeeze out as much air as possible from each mylar bag, then set a heavy item on the bag (like a brick or a water bottle), thus keeping even a little bit of air from reentering the bag? Then after you have prepped all the buckets you are going to seal up, and while the air is being kept at bay, by whatever heavy items you chose to sit on top of each mylar bag, you now go down the row of buckets, one-by-one popping oxygen absorbers in, before sealing each of them up? I'm thinking that by doing this little tweak of your system, each absorber to have a little less air to deal with. Anyway, just a thought. And again, thank you for your very informative video.
