It goes without saying that fishing requires caution as a result of the fast water, slick rocks and other challenges that occur in random, unexpected places. You need to exercise caution, particularly in the spring when the water is high or during rapid changes in tide before you fish anywhere. You should always wear a life vest when fishing. Also, a wading staff will help you keep your balance as you walk on the shoreline or wade.
The bottom line is that you must make a judgment and not rely on the opinions expressed here. The regulations governing legal access to fishing locations may change at any time, and it is your responsibility to understand the law. Nothing expressed should be construed as encouraging you to trespass on private property or violate a regulation.

I have used Kold Kutters for years and they work great.

I started using them last season and I'll never go back to the expensive versions!

They wear out a little faster than the name brand ones, but at those prices, who cares?

I like this guy's enthusiasm- if he can get that's animated and excited about a pack of screws, IDK, I want him when I need to hear bad news or something lol. Can you imagine him telling his wife how his day went?

Thanks, I just ordered a pack!! I bruised by forearm pretty good last year in the salmon river from just using rubber soled waders.

Use them up here in Northern Michigan all the time. Wouldn't go ice fishing without em!

A helpful tip. Before drilling them all the way into the Sole of your Boot put some Barge Glue on the threads and then run it down the rest of the way against the sole. You won’t have missing studs after a hard day of hiking/fishing. Thanks for the video!

Thanks, Steve. Goat heads were $24 for 30, I got 50 kold kutters for $10. Was going to use screws but with a new pair of Remington skagits, was happy to find kold kutters made specifically to grip. Thanks again.

Thanks as always. A pair of boots I purchased came with cleats. I'll use them but will buy these as a replacement once the exiting ones wear out. For the folks asking, the Cabela's felt waders come with cleats and you can watch for a sale on them. They may or may not be as good as some of the higher name brands but I've usually had good success with their products and the price is right.
@KayakhacksFishing

I see no real difference in the name brand vs the less expensive models. I always go with them.

@@KayakhacksFishing Agreed! In this day and time there are so many excellent products made that although they aren't the huge name brands we knew of many years ago but they are very good and pennies on the dollar as compared to the name brands.

I’ve been using sheet metal screws and so far they’re working out ok!

Do they stay much better than the sheet metal screws? Also, what boots do you use/recommend?
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 6 лет назад
I do not see any difference between these and the name brands I used before. For boots, I just try and balance cost with function. I used to use Simms and now have a set of Redington.

Just go to Lowe's and buy sheet metal screws and grind the points down. Works just as well. Cost you about $2.00.

The BEST traction screws for wading boots are aluminum as they need to be softer than the rocks you plan to wade on. The reaction between the aluminum stud/bar and the rocks will increase traction. I am ALL for economical ideas though!

Any recommendations for a set of economical waders? Either stocking foot or boot
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 6 лет назад
While the big names are good, I think the ones you can get at Dick's Sporting Goods or Bass Pro work just fine. My first pair was Simms and it was nice that they replaced them when the waders sprang a leak, but for the cost, I could just buy a new pair from Dicks if I could not repair the hole.

I assume that the 3/8 stud x 1/2” thread length is best for vibram soles? Please let me know before I buy
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 4 года назад
Sadly, it depends on the boot. If your boot takes studs now, see what the dimensions are. If not, it's a best guess. I think 1/2 should be good. Put one in and see how it holds before doing anything else.
@jeffkirby5835

Kayak Hacks Fishing thanks for the response. I am mainly concerned with going through the sole. I have Simms freestone and it appears to be well over 1/2” thick at the toe so I believe it will be ok. Do you suggest any loctite or water proof glue?
@KayakhacksFishing
@KayakhacksFishing 4 года назад
@@jeffkirby5835 No, it should hold as long as you use the places on the sole where Simms indicated studs could be put. Since the boot accepts studs, you could verify the size. Another reason not to lock them in permanently is they do wear down and you have to replace them from time to time.

Pretty easy. You just screw them into the marked locations on your boots where the expensive studs would go

I agree on felt. However, felt is illegal in many states because of its ability to transport invasive species from stream to stream.
