Axle ratio 3:15 for automatic vs 3.73 for the manual is moot in modern 6..7..8..9..10 speed automatics when you compare it to a manual,,as the gear ratio in the transmission for 1st gear in automatics is lower than the the 6 speed manual thus eliminating the rear axle ratio by tenfold. 6 speed transmission 1st gear ratio is 3.25 10 speed transmission 1st gear ratio is 4.70 You would need a axle ratio of 4.73's in the manual to be side by side the 10 speed automatic!! Most people are lost on this!

Same thing is true with the Camaro SS and ZL1 lineup. The 10-speed Auto is faster than the manual, with the same engine. You don't buy the manual for the best performance. You buy it for the engaging fun and in many cases the manual will be more reliable in the long run.

That might hold true for the versions (Mach I, Dark Horse, etc) that come with the Tremec transmission, but I would always assume the 10R80 automatic to be more reliable than the Getrag MT82 six speed manual transmission that comes in most Mustangs and GTs…

I will set my Mustang up for quick acceleration so the 10R80 is fun. The new 7th generation Mustang also shifts better in manual mode than the S550. As to possible differences in the engines I can speak from personal experience. My wife and got matching manual 98 V6s one time. They both felt really nice. Same trim level. The only difference was the exterior color. If I just drove mine, I never noticed any problems. If I drove hers the same day, hers felt just a bit better. Like the folks building it were in a better mood. We never raced because we never left at the same time so I don’t know if it was faster. Definite difference though.

The reason that the automatic version of the Mustang does not have the final drive ratio of the manual is that automatics have something called a stator which mutiplys the torque produced which would in a manual would be compensated of by a lower numeric gear ratio in the differential.

From the time I spent in an S650 premium Mustang GT. I didn't find it filled with plastic as you kept mentioning. The 10R80 is the transmission choice for drag racing plus the premium is a more comfortable daily driver with the heated and cooled seats along with other included options like it's tires and bigger brakes. It's possible the base car needs a computer upgrade which Ford recently completed via Wi-Fi. So instead of complaining. Take it to a dealership. The nice part about purchasing the base is you can add your own bolt on performance parts when you have the extra money to improve it. Quarter mile times. FYI. I recently priced a new charger RT wit a 5.7. Cloth seats without power. A terrible decade old interior that had a $60,000 price. That's higher than the higher equipped Mustang GT premium. I would take the Mustang any day of the week when it's about features and the Gen 4 Coyote V8. I think you guys would complain if you found a bag of $100 bills because one was wrinkled.

Sorta stupid since they don't have the transmission. I have a 2024 mustang with the performance package with a manual transmission and would never think about buying the base over it.

The coyote v8 prefers higher rpm to produce power so the 10 speed would keep the rpm in the happy spot. Same with the f150 it needs higher rpms to tow up hill

I had a conversation that I remembered when one of them brought up that its a muscle car. Me personally, I think the new mustangs, even the S550's, have become more of a sports car than a Muscle car. The last real muscle car IMO was the challenger in a lot of ways. Muscle cars are your big, heavy, high horsepower cars that are straight line focused. The mustangs have become more sportier in the sense that its an all rounder car
@GooglePixelGoogle
@GooglePixelGoogle 3 дня назад
The Mustang was never really a muscle car, it was a pony car. The muscle car was a midsized vehicle with a company's larger performance V8 engine, think GTO, Chevelle, Fairlane, Torino, and 442. The Camaro, Firebird, Cuda/Challenger (debateable), AMX, and Mustang were pony cars. The pony car is an American car classification for affordable, compact, highly styled coupés or convertibles with a "sporty" or performance-oriented image. Common characteristics include rear-wheel drive, a long hood, a short decklid, a wide range of options to individualize each car and use of mass-produced parts shared with other models. There is much debate among enthusiasts about the exact definition of a pony car, and what differentiates the vehicle from a muscle car. The general consensus is that pony cars are smaller and more refined than muscle cars. A few intermediate-size vehicles, such as the Dodge Challenger, may be considered to belong to both categories.

I dont think its just gearing and gear ratios I think the manual Mustang manage horse power and torque in a different way. Its an electronic thing to protect the manual gear box for the long run.

According to hundreds of street racing videos the auto is faster up to around 100mph...so for drag racing you want the auto...for high way rolls and top end the manuals apparently put down more powe and are faster after 3rd gear then the auto

The 6 speed manual Mustang GT will never beat a 10 speed automatic GT when both cars have a good launch no matter how good the driver is in the manual car. The automatic puts power down more efficiently and with less loss of momentum between each shift. The manual will always be more fun to drive though.

I'd like to see this same comparison of your New 2024 "grandpa spec" vs a 2018-23 of the same spec (V8 w/10R80). Show if it is worth the 47k price for new, over a used 2018-23 that could be picked up for around 30K. I think that would be a great comparison.

@cormaro13 I'm looking at it from a performance perspective. I have a 2019 GTCS and I realize the build quality isn't great. But honestly, when I test drove a 2024, it was just as bad. Ford hasn't put any effort into addressing that aspect of the Mustang.

It's sad that manual vs. auto switched effectiveness in the late 2000's. It used to be so fun to have a manual hatchback in the 80-90's and line up against a muscle car slushbox of the same era, back in the day. From a dig or rolling, the muscle car would have a pretty pathetic showing. But these days you can have a reaction time of single digit milliseconds, shift perfectly, and you'll still be left in the dust. I would be curious about the cheapest auto GT vs. the fully loaded auto GT. Those additional goodies weigh down a car, pretty quick.
